If the art wasn't shitty it wouldn't be so endearing.

I don't think these should go for 15 dollars on Steam though. Luckily 6, 7, & 8 are abandonware.

ZUN based his nickname on Zuntata, the name for the collective of musicians working for Taito. But while he did work there for a time, he never made any music for them and has absolutely no relation to Zuntata whatsoever. And yet he picked a nickname that implies that he was the core of that group.

I suggest we fix this historic injustice and stop referring to Junya Oota with a stolen name!

To each their own. But I honestly have no idea why they are so popular considering what is available out there including free games.

Sometimes bootleg is better. Nowadays almost everything is "sterile". Playing Touhou kinda feels like playing the real, old games from before the PS3 era. Bedroom coder feel.

Except that "bedroom coder" is licenising his series to predatory corpos, throwing around copyright strikes and using AI art for his games now. So he did get on with the times but only in the worst ways possible.

The early windows games, Touhou 06 through 08, are peak. UFO is very good too.

Some of the best music, best vibes, and best bullet patterns in the genre.

I put four Touhou games in my Top 25 of all time list, and I regret nothing.

Sick. He should sell the series to Saudi Arabia next.

I still think it's funny the AI backgrounds actually looked better than 99% of his asset store screensaver backgrounds he'd been using for years.

Damn, I hate this whole series, there's a sense of "flatness" and lack of impact, everything feels weightless.

I played FDF2 once and it was among the most fantastically unappealing experiences I've ever had with a video game. Tacky, gaudy direction, soporific music, boring survival, openly derivative yet failing both the creative drive of what it's referencing and failing to create its own value. It's like an actualization of all of the various negative perceptions people have about Touhou games rolled up together, and then the resultant hairball somehow attracts praise from those same people who don't like Touhou games. I couldn't force myself to try scoring, so I may be being unfair, though since LYX has said TH07 was "too intimidating" for him to even try and that was undoubtedly an influence on FDF2, I don't think I missed out.

I had such visceral dislike for it, I still use whether someone singles it out as a litmus test on if I should give their taste any respect. And supposedly this was the good one and the sequel is worse! But then that's coming from people who liked FDF2 in the first place so they might well be just wrong. I'm not going to find out for myself because imagining a world where FDF2 is rock bottom is preferable to playing 3 and risk confirming a cruel reality.

Frankly, FDF2 and 3 feel rather overdesigned. Sometimes it's hard to even tell what can and what can't hit you. FDF1 feels just right and still blows any official games out of the water. The music IS amazing in all three though.

That said, FDF3 is madly hardware demanding while even 2 runs on a 10-year-old PC just fine. But at least all of them run on Windows 7, unlike the latest official games.

Say what you want about touhou, but at least the main games aren't mobile gacha shit. Or worse: AI generated mobile gacha shit. I don't know if those really exist though, but I know AI generated games exist so I'd not be surprised if some are combined with gacha as well. I'd still take touhou over those any day of the week.

Also, at least the FDF games have graphics. The interpretation of Alice's stage in FDF2 for example, you can clearly tell it takes place in a snow field. In the original game it was just a featureless blue void that for the longest time I thought the characters were just floating in outer space. I also appreciate how those games add more zako variety instead of just fairies and the occasional yin yang ball.

That said, nowdays I no longer care much about touhou since I returned to my roots and my tastes shifted to what I used to enjoy while growing up: oldschool (non-danmaku) shmups.

FDF2 is complete ass. 1 is actually considerably better. I also played the limited time demo of 3, and the difference between that and 1, let alone 2, was astronomical (in a good way). I'm waiting for a good sale because like you, I'm still a bit traumatized by how incomprehensibly shit 2 was, but I feel pretty confident now that it was just a freak accident.

FDF is pretty mid as a PC game series, but the first two games have eXA releases that are rebalanced to be harder and give less extends, and you know what, playing a Touhou game in an arcade setting is pretty fucking cool. And after a handful of attempts I was already reaching stage 5, so I'm sure with a bit of practice it would be a completely doable 1CC. I did credit feed it once and the game wasn't throwing insane patterns at the end, it seemed pretty manageable. Like if you just could go to the arcade once a week or something and could play the machine for a few hours each time you could probably clear it after going a few times. That's perfect for the games where you don't have easy access to play whenever you want, emulators, and save states. I'd agree that FDF1 is much better than 2. I really don't like the first level of FDF2 at all. The colors, the level design, ugh. It's just a bit... shit. FDF2 is like "Hey remember when you liked this thing in Perfect Cherry Blossom? Here's a lesser version of that." And it does that for thirty minutes and then it ends and you have eight lives in stock for some reason. But FDF1 with the eXA rebalance is *chef's kiss.*

There are plenty of Touhou fan games that I'd put above the FDF games though. The problem that many Touhou fan games have is that they are too easy. Mystical Power Plant and Concealed the Conclusion are both very good and they atleast put up a little bit of challenge. They are older games and run on an older version of Danmakufu so there's some inherent jankyness with them that will always be there (It's always going to stutter loading in certain assets no matter how powerful your PC is. I've seen scripts break too, leading to the game softlocking). They're very good games though and they're not freebie clears, so they both get my vote. There's a few others like Shining Shooting Star, Hollow Song of Birds, Infinite Blade Pavilion, Book of Star Mythology, and Riverbed Soul Saver are all worth checking out since they're well made, but all of them are just too easy to have any real staying power. Most people will probably blind clear them, so it's like, why not just make them a little harder, you know?

Touhou scoring mechanics suck. This is why almost nobody cares to score.

Also, fuck Yukari to hell. I hope she dies a miserable and painful death. Fucking bitch.
