Aye - scanlines on or off - the others feature a simulated knackered CRT flyback.
I do like the remixes though.
If you use an old-school Sony Mini DV camcorder with "image stabilization" functionality turned on and capturing some game footage of an arcade monitor running in 320 x 240p, you'll get the "infamous" scrolling line issue whereas if you turn "off" the stabilization, the scrolling line issue goes away (as shown in "real-time" through the handy accompanying LCD monitor display or internal color LCD viewfinder setup) -- problem solved! How cool is that?
Of course, it helps if the Sony Mini DV camcorder is is mounted on a tripod for extra "stability-wise" when recording such low-res 15.7kHz arcade monitor gaming footage.
The fact that it takes them so long to put out The Patch makes me think there's hope for redemption, like they're going deep on the topic. But at the same time, it might just as well be the fact that the game doesn't have priority...?
I think they realized all ten of the Raiden Fighters fans out there weren’t worth the trouble.
To be honest, it isnt unplayable, but it isnt desirable either. Not as bad as the PC version, not as bad the as Astro City V shmups, but nowhere even near the barebones Taoplan Collection shmups either.
This game is just cursed to never have a food port since the 360.
I don't really like to call games unplayable just because they're subpar or are failing to meet my expectations (not much for the drama side of things these days) so I want to agree this isn't unplayable. But the speed of Real Battle Phase 1 and 2 (the fastets bullets in them, not the stages in general) paired with the input latency makes dodging by reflex impossible. So I'd call this close to unplayable. At the very least needlessly hard.
This isn't fixed yet? Damn, they sure are taking their time. Then again it takes time for Sony and Nintendo to approve patches, so maybe the patch is done and the approval process is ongoing.

They run an local test a few days ago to gather more info with stg players for the coming update.
Looks like late May for the patch, 54Hz will be implemented but high score tables will be shared across 60 and 54. A second patch will also be in the works, but no details will br provided on that until the first patch comes out.
Anyone had any luck with a 'region free' Xbox and a NTSC-UC copy of the game? I'm guessing the American/Canadian price stays fairly low because everyone over there who wanted to play it has it, and the really hardcore fans have the arcade boards. Maybe there was quite a high print run? Lot of gamers outside that region don't really mess with US hardware much, and either have PAL60 or go straight to JAP.
Certainly one of the most egregious examples of a non release I can think of (especially as many of the other Shooters weren't region locked anyway), since Final Fantasy Tactics never saw the light of day here officially in the 1990s.
One thing I noted having a quick scan of 360 consoles 2nd hand (I only ever had the original UK cream model on the Jasper revision), the slimmer square version, presumably the last, doesn't appear to have the big socket on the back for a SCART cable. Something to bear in mind hooking up to an old telly.

Did the update drop?
I think but, I don't know that update dropped.
Shmups DEV Studios Personal Project > Gunner Blade Media Series (Gunner Blade 1: Tales of Landscape) | 3 Action-Pack of Short Animation Film: RayForce 1.5 R-Gear Project, Who Framed Miku Gacha Life Series and Platypus Colonel Alliance
There's only been the one update (1.001.000) and that came out close to launch, at 14 March. The one we care about is scheduled to "late May", which isn't quite yet.

Based on your screen name I assume you are from the Bay Area. Was your college in the Bay also? Curious to see which school had it to see if I missed out on playing Raiden Fighters on a cab. When I was in college I lost interest in arcade games so I feel like I may have missed out.
Yes! I went to school in Davis. They had this little arcade next to the on-campus bowling alley. Not sure if it's still there, I suspect not. Tekken 5 was also quite popular at that arcade. I believe they also had Time Crisis III. I also recall seeing Raiden Fighters and Viper Phase 1 (new edition) at Scandia in Rohnert Park.
I believed the US-based arcade distributor Romstar had a deal with Seibu Kaihatsu. which is why the Raiden pcbs could be found for a relatively good price. I believe Romstar also had delas with Taito. My board of Flying Shark has a Romstar stickers on it.

Scandia in RP is legendary. I’m used to live up there around 2012 and even then the selection was amazing.
Formerly known as 8 1/2. I return on my second credit!

Oh cool! I didn't realize it was still going strong in 2012. I remember seeing F-Zero AX and Outrun 2 machines around 2010 or so. That was when I first noticed how popular KOF was with the Mexican American community.

Yeah they had a few rare ones like Battletoads arcade, Super Puzzle Fighter, and even Donkey Kong II. Everything was always in amazing shape.

Nice. I went to San Jose State. They had a solid arcade in the Student Union's bowling alley as well. Sadly at that time I wasn't doing a whole lot of arcade gaming when I was there so I rarely went. Total missed opportunity.

For scrilla4rella,
It was the American arcade distributor of Fabtek whom handled the sales and distribution of Raiden, Raiden II, Raiden DX, Viper Phase 1 U.S.A. with it's exclusive 2 loops (that the original JPN SPI versions of Viper Phase 1 "Old Version" and Viper Phase 1 "New Version" don't have whatsoever as they both are 1 loop affairs at best), Raiden Fighters (running on the Seibu Kaihatsu SPI arcade platform), Raiden Fighters II: Operation Hell Dive -- SPI, Raiden Fighters Jet -- SPI and Raiden II - New Version.
Raiden Fighters Jet 2000 jamma pcb was released as a dedicated single-layer Seibu SPI motherboard + game rom jamma based pcb for the China arcade market and is considered an official Seibu Kaihatsu release indeed.

Ok yes, Fabtek does indeed ring a bell. I'm sure they were responsible for creating many a shmups fans here in the US. We salute you!

The 54hz Patch is out. I picked up the game and played briefly, seemed fine at first glance but I'm also no expert.
Thank you for the update. I haven't bought this collection yet but I'd like to soon.
Just to confirm, this release doesn't offer save states, is that correct?

Great news that the patch is out! I’ll test myself tonight. I don’t trust Moss on the virtue of their track record, so I can’t unshoulder my skepticism quite yet.
And no, unfortunately no save states - but a limited training mode is there.
I played a few games of 2 last night and it felt quite good. I'll have to wait for someone to do a proper side-by-side to confirm how accurate it is, but my first impressions were strong.

Edit: And after this quick test I want to say I felt a small improvement as far as input latency goes as well, but it's still not as precise as arcade or 360.
I've been waiting for the patch (and a sale!) to grab this on switch (yes not the ideal platform, but I like my collection all in one place and play handheld/tabletop a lot).... Just wondering if the 54fps mode introduces any ugly stutter or tearing etc, or does everything play smoothly enough? I'm not a complete perfectionist, but if it's distractingly jittery I want to avoid.

I would not try to play these games in handheld/tabletop. An exercise in frustration and futility as there's too many fast/small bullets to play these at any sort of decent level of competency. If you're a pure handheld player, I'd just skip this one.
