New Switch stg title of "Super Star Shooter Classic".....

Post by PC Engine Fan X! »

On the the USA region Switch eShop portal, a brand new stg title by the name of "Super Star Shooter Classic" appeared on 1/19/2026, Monday. It has an MSRP of $3.99 usd (literally "chmup pocket change" these days -- a mere almost sixteen quarters short of a penny if you will) and is a mere 110mb digital d/l at best. Upon booting it up for the very first time on my OLED Switch setup, it has a myriad of different game modes including the following:

Game Mode A

Game Mode B

Replay Mode A

Replay Mode B

Button Map

Setting -- Buttons are completely re-mappable for Shot, Speed Change, Speed Up and Speed Down -- you might recall that it was truly a "four button" affair on the GBA port of Super Star Shooter Advance, indeed, and the NSW port of SSSC retains that very same "four-button" scheme/layout for completeness as usual.

and finally,

The NSW port of Super Star Shooter Classic is a retro-tribute nod towards to the original PC Engine/Turbografx-16 stg title of Hudson Soft/Compile's classic "Super Star Soldier" caravan mode, namely the 2 minute & 5 minute modes released back in 1990 in both Japan and in the USA respectively.

What's new about this particular "Super Star Shooter Classic" release for the NSW gaming platform is, that it has on-line leaderboard support for both game Mode A and Game Mode B. Not only does it have online leaderboard support, it also has replay mode so you can watch your own replays at your leisure -- how cool is that?

No on-board scanline filter support is available but this add-on device will do the trick alrighty: https://www.amazon.com/Gam3Gear-Scanlin ... 485&sr=8-2

This "Super Star Shooter Classic" has appeared on the Nintendo GBA gaming platform as a homebrew released stg title under the proper title of "Super Star Shooter Advance" many moons ago but requires a GBA flash cart such as the KriKzz GBA X5 flash cart to boot it up/play it properly.

It used to be that if you wanted to play the GBA port of "Super Star Shooter Advance" on the big-screen TV monitor setup running at 640 x 480 progressive output format using the optional 1st-party Nintendo released GCN component cables or GCN Japanese D-Terminal cable setup, you'd have to fire up the ol' Gamecube gaming console with the Gameboy Player add-on accessory installed + an proper 3rd-party released Hori "Gameboy Player Gamepad" to play it properly -- at least with the NSW, all the CGN hardware isn't necessary nowadays and can be successfully retired in 2026. As it is, the NSW port of SSSC has support for 480p, 720p and 1080p if the Switch is used in "docked mode," of course.
----------

I'm currently ranked at #4 with an overall score of 431,960 points on the Ranking A online leaderboard section (as of 4/20/2026).

What's the difference between" Game Mode A" and "Game Mode B" of the NSW port of SSSC one might inquire about?

Answer: Game Mode A is easier whereas with Game Mode B, it's harder with more bullets on-screen -- it's not disclosed nor mentioned the actual differences with the two modes are but up to the end-user to figure out for themselves (which isn't that hard to do in hindsight).

Also, if you manage to destroy the end-stage boss on "Game Mode B's" harder difficulty setting, it's worth a whopping additional 100,000 points added to your overall score.

The big circular enemy sprite that if shot at, the green colored center closes upon itself and if destroyed together as pair, is worth a whopping 80,000 points on Game mode B indeed.

It's well known that the Steam and NSW online leaderboards for Super Star Shooter Classic are seperate from each other and aren't cross-compatible with each other (so there's that particular "special distinction" between the Steam & NSW ports of SSSC as they are).

I managed to place #3 with a score of 501,510 points on Game Mode B with the NSW port of SSSC as of 1/20/2026.

Very well done port of SSSC on the NSW gaming platform as it is.

Is anyone familiar enough with the game to know if it's a straight port of the X68k original or if it's modified? I know X68k has a v1.00 and 2.00 and this has A/B, but I'm not sure if A/B is trying to recreate that.
