This is why I mostly collect imports. So much cheaper (even today).

Re: Stupid Shmup Stuff You've Bought
Oooh, yeah linking cabs would be amazing! As a small consolation, at least the Alpha does have good compatibility with other USB controllers and has two USB slots. I've tried a bunch of them that work fine: PS4 MadCatz TE2, Xbox or PS3 MadCatz TE, Hori RAPs, Taito Egret Mini sticks and controllers, Retro-bit's USB 6-Button Genesis pad... Some good optionsChurchOfSolipsism wrote: ↑Wed Oct 15, 2025 11:47 amI've heard someone express their regret that two Alphas can't be linked via cable for VS-sessions, and I totally agree, including a two player option via linked Alphas would have been the bomb.hamfighterx wrote: ↑Fri Oct 10, 2025 1:35 am
I've been pretty into Evercade since getting one of the Street Fighter edition Evercade Alpha bartop machines last year (Merry Christmas, me). Then I got a decent deal on the Mega Man one too and figured hey I'll swap out the stick and buttons for some good Sanwa stuff and have a second one (why? IDK).
Also fully remappable buttons at a system level - the Alpha walks you through assigning keybinds to up/down/left/right, up to 8 face buttons (more than the Alpha itself, with its 6-button SF2 layout), start/select/menu. Hmmm now that I think of it, if I run into a Neo Geo game that uses all 4 buttons, I might actually plug one of my sticks with a 2x4 button layout for a more authentic Neo control scheme
Well what do you know, that OPTIONS menu on the main screen does let you change it! I think I missed that because on the arcade games, I got used to the only way to reconfigure controls being entering the game options and choosing "Edit Controls" on the Alpha game select screen, before you ever launch the game. Which makes sense, arcade games tend not to have button config menus!ChurchOfSolipsism wrote: ↑Wed Oct 15, 2025 11:47 amYou can change the controls to the classic "hold shot button to keep pointing in the same direction while shooting and walking in all directions" in the options. The one thing that pisses me off (and I'm sounding like abroken record here) is that you have to let go of the shot button to do a dodge roll. Stupid decision.hamfighterx wrote: ↑Fri Oct 10, 2025 1:35 amOne miss: I enjoy Xeno Crisis as a game, and had a chance to play the Neo Geo version at an arcade which gave me the idea that I'd like to play it on my little bartop. So I picked up the Evercade one. But it turns out the controls are pretty awkward with a stick and 6-button Street Fighter layout, so that really decreases my enjoyment. It's more fun to play on one of the portable Evercade machines, or I prefer the Switch version.
On XenoCrisis, doing that just shows you the default controls and doesn't allow you to change them, so I jumped to the incorrect conclusion that it was unconfigurable since I foolishly just skipped right by the in-game menu. Thanks for alerting me to my mistake, that is quite a significant difference!

----------
I use a USA region PSX SCPH-5500 console with a modchip installed to play JPN PSX imports along with a Gold Finger device to be able to watch the FMV clips without having to play the actual game just to watch them (using the on-board backside "Parallel I/O" port interface) -- literally the best of both worlds with a PSX modchip + the conveinence & utilities afforded with a Gold Finger cheat device really breaks the PSX wide open. Never settle/be content with just a barebones modchipped PSX alone.
----------
----------
On the USA region PSOne console with Official Sony PSOne LCD monitor setup (for it's cool "low-res" 15.7kHz RGB screen input), I utilize a "PS X-Change Version 2" boot disc and then after it stops spinning, swap the boot disc with a JPN PSX import, press the "Start" button & viola, it boots up/loads the import game title like "black magic" -- easy as pie. The PS X-Change Ver. 2 boot disc usually goes for about $40.00 to $50.00 usd brand new on eBay nowadays.
It's well-known that you can use the PS X-Change Ver. 2 boot disc with a PSX SCPH-9000 console with ease (as Sony got rid of the backside "Parallel I/O" port interface on that particular PSX console anyways).

Good points. Will you buy the Big Red Neo Geo Alpha some people have predicted if it's released? I'd love to have one, but honestly I have played all the NG games (which isn't that many since I don't play VS fighters anymore) I like to death...hamfighterx wrote: ↑Fri Oct 17, 2025 3:55 am Oooh, yeah linking cabs would be amazing! Yeah, I probably would, if only because the Neo is an all time favorite platform for me. Would have to have a proper Neo Geo button layout though (they can stick extra buttons on there too, but I want my curved row of 4). I can play all of the games in multiple ways, but I don't have space for a full MVS cabinet and I do like the size of the Alpha's bartop format. TBH, anything more than a single Alpha qualifies as "stupid stuff I've bought" - so having two of them already certainly counts! But I would buy that one too lol.ChurchOfSolipsism wrote: ↑Fri Oct 17, 2025 3:28 pmGood points. Will you buy the Big Red Neo Geo Alpha some people have predicted if it's released? As a huge Third Strike fan, I'd also instantly get another Capcom one if they did a Street Fighter III edition Alpha with all 3 SF3 games plus some other Capcom-published titles. Hmmm, how about Progear, Saturday Night Slammasters, and Ghouls n' Ghosts, that's a nice 6-pack for me!

Oh that goes without saying, original button layout is a must. Part of the charm of an arcade machine, for me at least, is that it's a dedicated machine. Put MAME on the cab you build, but make sure it boots right into the game that is the cab's theme.hamfighterx wrote: ↑Fri Oct 17, 2025 8:42 pm

Or they could release an alpha version of a licensed candy cab - Jesus, I'd jump on that faster than a horny and willing Henry Cavill
I have no idea why they included three SF alpha games - nobody in their right mind would ask for that, right? - but not a single one of the SFIII games...hamfighterx wrote: ↑Fri Oct 17, 2025 8:42 pm TBH, anything more than a single Alpha qualifies as "stupid stuff I've bought" - so having two of them already certainly counts! If we're talking Capcom dream game selection, I'd go for Progear, Battle Circuit (both of which I once owned as CPS2-carts), Alien VS Predator, Mars Matrix, and either Giga Wang and one or two of the D&D games... if they included proper marquees - see above

That's... me, specifically. I am the one person who absolutely would ask for that!ChurchOfSolipsism wrote: ↑Sat Oct 18, 2025 9:12 amI have no idea why they included three SF alpha games - nobody in their right mind would ask for that, right?
Well, maybe I'm not "in my right mind" and you are therefore still technically correct. But I looooove the Alpha series. Have always had a hard time picking between Alpha 2 and Third Strike as my all time fave fighting game, they are my 1(a) and 1(b). Aside from SFA2, Alpha 1 got me back into gaming (permanently) after briefly drifting away a little bit in the mid-90s, and Alpha 3 is fantastic. No complaints with any of them, I absolutely love that they included the entire trilogy. I also love that they paired it with one classic/CPS1 Street Fighter II version (CE) and Super Turbo, and PUZZLE FIGHTER is a fantastic choice that I love for the 6th slot. It's truly a perfect lineup in my eyes (if limiting things to 6 games), even if I'm a crazy outlier lol
I'd similarly go bananas for ALL THREE Street Fighter III games on one bartop haha. I'd be tempted but could probably resist the Marvel games (which isn't that crazy to imagine, considering Arcade1up did one with all of X-Men COTA, Marvel Super Heroes, XvSF, MSHvSF, MvC, and MvC2, and then the console collection - so feels like the licensing would not be an impossible roadblock).
The Megaman version Alpha is the game selection I have some more issues with. I like the idea of one fighting-focused Alpha and the other more of a general Capcom arcade selection. Final Fight and Strider were absolutely perfect choices. Knights of the Round is cool, always liked that one so it's fine by me. Carrier Air Wing was a STRANGE choice, but... OK, a more obscure hori shooter? I can live with that. But I don't care about the Mega Man fighters, and don't really know anyone who does. Those seem more like just a pick for Mega Man's name recognition, but so many other Capcom games that I'd have preferred to see to fill those two slots.

Eh, I'm not a fighting game guy anyway, so if it made you happy, good for you. I just wish they hadn't gone for the incredibly ugly American Street Fighter layout (what's that gray TV turned to a dead channel bullshit supposed to be anyway?), but again I realize this might have quite abit of nostalgic value for Americans.hamfighterx wrote: ↑Tue Oct 21, 2025 12:15 amThat's... me, specifically. Agree that Mega Man was only done for name recognition (I've tried a couple of times to get into them, but nope, not for me), the artwork does look cool though. Carrier Airwing is boring, I wish they had included another brawler like Cadillacs and Dinosaurs or whatever, but there probably would have been licensing issues. Make it 19XX, then.
