Goldilocks Scoring

Post by mycophobia »

this is the dumb name i've given to a weird concept for "a shmup with a good scoring system".

The requirements are thus:
1. The game is finite.
2. The lowest scoring ALL I can find should be 50-65% of the WR score. I'm considering ALLs in the true sense of the word here, as in all loops. This is where the name comes from, since just clearing the game actually means something for score, but there's still more to do after that.
3. The mechanism for scoring should be relatively ordinary; as far from "a minigame on top of the regular game" as possible.

There are allowances for what I'd consider "ordinary scoring" as that's going to be pretty subjective, and even the percentage can be fudged a tad. I'll mark special cases with reasoning.

The list so far:

Gunbird
Sengoku Ace
Strikers 1945
Sengoku Blade
Strikers 1945 II
Strikers 1999
Zero Gunner 2
Air Gallet (falls just below 50% threshold but is exceedingly ordinary and most points come from the life bonus i think?)
R-Type II
Image Fight
X-Multiply
Mystic Riders
Thunder Dragon 2
Trigon
Guardian Force
Storm Blade (falls neatly within the margin without the glitch but goes outside of it with it, but otherwise an extremely ordinary game)
Under Defeat
Hyper Duel

Tempted to say Hyper Duel and Mystic Riders would fit the criteria? Both very straightforward for scoreplay, mostly. (Though the latter does have a bug that's not public knowledge, presumably the last 200K in the WR comes from it)

I would vote down anything with checkpoint milking. I think it is extremely dumb.

I think Judgement Silversword is a very pleasant game to chase score in but I do not know if it meets all your criteria.

Does it count if you get giga bonus from extends left after clear?

Blue Wish Desire I feel may fit this and also Mushihimesama Original Mode; both these games almost all score comes from extends lol.

For Blue Wish Desire most people will clear with score around 50m, but you get +10m for each spare extend you have at game end scorecard... so for 5x spare extend can double score to 100m lol.

Mushihimesama Original is even more extreme... most people will clear around 10m but you also get +10m for each spare extend lol!

So if you kill last boss at 10m and no-miss... 10m become 60m!~

i'm not taking any special consideration for games with massive score bonuses for spare lives, so mushi orig, r-type leo, etc etc are out.

checkpoint milking is fine. its silly but it's not exactly unintuitive

i will investigate my beloved kino's suggestions uhhh. later. i want to say i already dismissed mystic riders for one reason or another

despite the weird phantom tick point stuff in Hyper Duel i'll count it. for Mystic Riders i don't have enough data on the low end to say one way or the other whether it falls within the score range

just 4 u ; )

1.3m Mystic Riders 2-all (clocking in at approx. 60.8% of WR, so safely within the threshold)
