Trap15’s Mars Matrix unfucked hack (removes two frames of input lag, adds two extra buttons for autofire and burst fire weapon thingy) has been added to the latest release of hbmame and is available on MiSTer via the arcade_offsets repo in update_all.

The matching rom set for hbmame is probably on IA by now.

Will this Mars Matrix patch work on a genuine CPS2 MM board "A&B" setup (with a dedicated 3-button layout instead of the usual default "one button" setup)? And if it's possible, what eproms would need to be "reflashed" to do so?
Yes, MM was released back in 2000 indeed.
----------
It's well-known that the CPS2 MM version can be counter-stopped -- so Capcom added a couple of extra zeros to it's Dreamcast GD-Rom release of MM to fix/remedy that particular pressing issue.

Believe so. That’s what trap15 targeted it for and tested it on. He specifically targeted the original, not phoenix ROMs which means something to people more knowledgeable in CPS2 than me. I whipped up a custom version of mame for some folks on discord who wanted to play it and then submitted that to hbmame.PC Engine Fan X! wrote: ↑Fri Aug 22, 2025 6:27 amdeepthaw wrote: ↑Fri Aug 22, 2025 6:07 am Trap15’s Mars Matrix unfucked hack (removes two frames of input lag, adds two extra buttons for autofire and burst fire weapon thingy) has been added to the latest release of hbmame and is available on MiSTer via the arcade_offsets repo in update_all.

That's awesome that this MM patch works on the real "plain-vanilla" stock CPS2 MM setup. Color me impressed.
Sure, Capcom went the "extra mile" with it's Dreamcast GD-Rom release of MM in offering seperate buttons for all four weapons & still including the original CPS2 "single button" functionality for gameplay & game mechanics aspects for completeness.
---------
It was quite a big deal when Capcom USA finally released the DC game of MM back in 2001 stateside -- I had pre-ordered a copy with a $5.00 prepaid deposit through Software Etc. and when it finally showed up, they said that only five DC copies of MM had been shipped in via UPS of which all were reserved copies/spoken for (so that basically told me with this new insight & revelation, that Capcom USA didn't make/sell that many copies of DC MM to begin with in the first place -- it was what it was at that particular point in time).

Nice! I wonder if it would be possible to remove the counterstop with a patch.
In any case, I hope this means that more people will actually give Mars Matrix a shot!
