I like UFO...
but my favorite is probably PCB or IN, I never get tired of how seamless some of the music sync in PCB is, like when you're fighting the Trio and the music hits its crescendo right when the gate appears.

Re: Touhou
The first three Windows games are my favorites.
MoF, SA, and UFO are good games, but they lack a bit of the magic, IMO. Been following the series since MoF was a new game, lol. I can see the argument for SA or UFO being one of the best games in the series, though I think the first three windows games are a bit more special. Touhou 15 is the worst mainline game (atleast in the Windows era, never played the earlier ones...) Touhou 18 is pretty neat with the rouge-like elements.

Funny to hear that you of all people like Touhou 18’s card system after seeing your other posts.
Or is it that the game leaves the bullet patterns well enough alone?

Re: Touhou
After Touhou 12, I think the games have just kinda going through the motions, so Touhou 18 being more of a fresh experience is something that weighs more heavily for me.Technicolor wrote:Funny to hear that you of all people like Touhou 18’s card system after seeing your other posts.Or is it that the game leaves the bullet patterns well enough alone?
And like you mentioned, the bullet patterns are left alone, so the card system is really there for score, resources, and shot power.

Re: Touhou
That really is probably the best way to put roguelike elements in a shmup, huh. Maybe some alternative stage routes with an additional option to randomly select them.

Re: Touhou
Longass post got eaten by the forum and I’m sleep deprived so I’ll keep this short. Touhou isn’t even remotely like that, not canon Touhou. I would not be on this forum if it were.Lemnear wrote:i'm the only one that finds Touhou vaguely disturbing...?

Canon Touhou has desexualized character designs drawn to imitate “dated” 80s/90s manga like Izumi Takemoto’s stuff. It has characters that sometimes act in jerkish or odd or immature ways that don’t readily conform to some lonely salaryman’s fantasy. Sex and even romance are vanishingly rare topics of discussion in-universe. And Zun has been very resistant to changing any of these things; the man has literally let fangames outshine him before taking the series in a more popular but pandering direction.
Please don’t let shit like Lost Word or the occasional weird fuckers on this forum color your perception of the games. And don’t view the series through the lens of the industry that created those issues, because honestly the industry has a lot to learn from Zun in that regard.

Re: Touhou
Yeah, Touhou's not even remotely sexualized in any of the official games. The only hints of sex or even romance are in fan media. The art and dialogue in them are about as sterile and harmless as you can get. Just because they have anime girls as the main characters doesn't mean the games are perverted in nature, and it's a weird accusation to level at ZUN.
Saidaioujou and Caladrius Blaze are both recent games that are very clearly aiming for pervert appeal, so feel free to complain about those instead.

Re: Touhou
Probably was the trauma on HOW i came in contact with Touhou the first time...
Well i can't deny its merits and success (20 games are a lot...more than most famous teams) plus the tons of fans and praise it got.
Is probably the most famous SHUMPS series actually..and i'm not so much happy about it

That’s fair. I’ve a higher tolerance for Touhou fandom shenanigans than seems standard here, but there’s…questionable content out there.

anyway, try nOt to let the fanbase (or me) deter you away frOm touhou, dude. fuCk the stigma, 'cause the games are pretty siCk + brutal as hell if yOu go for a perfect run. the scOre systemz are apparently pretty fun tOo from wHat other plAyerz like chum and amlux have told me. (i never really pAy a lotta attention to the score systemz in a shmup unless i hAve to.)
heCk, even a bunch of the fangames are pretty legit in quality.
when it comes to fetishized designz, it'z really cave who'z way mOre guilty than zun ever has been w/ tOuhou. oH yeah, and then konami made those dumbass otomedius games \m/

Re: Touhou
Seeing that Touhou 9 to 18 are on sale at Steam, what is considered a fair (and easy difficulty) starting point in the series?
Working in the japanese language achievement
Re: Touhou
10 is the most straightforward representation of the basic idea, has a nice aesthetic and plays perfectly decently. But personally I'd recommend starting with 12 even if it's relatively unfriendly, because it's just a much better game. Or even Fairy Wars for something weirder. They all have multiple difficulty levels which can accommodate anyone anyway.
The other best ones on Steam are very unconventional (9, 9.5/12.5), while the other conventional ones are lower quality than 10/12 to a greater or lesser degree.

Re: Touhou
10, for the reasons Lethe mentioned. It's also the easiest normal-mode clear.
I'd recommend 14 next. It emphasises the point-of-collection mechanic, which is important across the series.
11,12&15 are the hardest normal-mode clears, so might want to leave those 'til last.

Touhou 11 & 12 are two of the best games post that amazing run of 06, 07, and 08. Touhou 15 is the only game in the series that I don’t really have a favorable opinion on. Touhou 15 is the hardest, but unlike 11 and 12, which were enhanced by being more difficult, Touhou 15 is hard for the wrong reasons.

Re: Touhou
It's amazing that nearly all of them on Steam now, without a single official English translation. They really do expect fans to carry all the weight, the sack on ZUN never ceases to amaze me.

Re: Touhou
Touhou was my introduction to the bullet hell subgenre in 2008, when the series was at its peak. I was really into it at that time, but was never a very good player, with my most notable achievements being a couple hard 1cc's at EoSD/MoF and a few Extra clears.
I don't exactly have a favorite game, but SA would be the most special to me if I had to pick one, due to the amount of time I spent trying to get a Hard 1cc in it back then (ended up never achieving that, lol).
Nowadays I'm not that much into Touhou, but still play the new games when they're released. I enjoyed the full version of th20 which came out a couple days ago.
