Any Dreamcast VGA (Dsub) Cable with switch for 480i?
Any Dreamcast VGA (Dsub) Cable with switch for 480i?
Basically like those Scart cables where you can switch between 480i/480p with a switch on the cable but with a Dsub15 connector, I could have sworn retro-access used to have one?
Re: Any Dreamcast VGA (Dsub) Cable with switch for 480i?
I don't think the HD15 version ever had its own listing, but I think it might have been a possibility under the custom cable maker. I was curious and this is what I saw when I searched on Twitter.

It appears that they are not offered due to equipment compatability problems. If you're confident that you could get it working with your setup then I imagine you could still get them to make you a custom listing. If you go this route make sure the custom listing they make is correct. You have to go through the chat function to request custom cables and the process is a pain in the butt.
The silence on Twitter is a bit odd at the moment. The 9th was supposed to be the day coax stock arrived, but I noticed it has been silent and orders are closed rather than full speed ahead. Maybe it's nothing. It has been such a ride with Retro Access the past year or so that silence is now what gets me concerned.

Yeah, I remember something like that too—Retro Access did offer a Dsub15 switchable sync cable for 480i/480p, but it looks like it's no longer listed. You might need to DIY one or check with other custom cable makers like Retro Gaming Cables or Wookweng.
Re: Any Dreamcast VGA (Dsub) Cable with switch for 480i?
It seems they stopped making them around 2022ish

Unfortunate but I will inquire about a custom cable, I know there are the "VGA boxes" like the official Sega one, but having it compacted into a simple cable is nicer. I have completely switched from scart to dsub for all my consoles at this point using an inexpensive switchbox and don't have to worry about my OCD with checking the scart cable are properly connected every time I play a console (yeah I'm a bit obsessive but its annoying when scart cables just get loose).
I don't know why more companies don't bother making dsub cables (I guess just not popular enough), but I would love it retrogamingcables and others would offer them too.
I just bought my first Dreamcast and this is the only thing I'm missing (it came with a composite cable lol).
EDIT: The custom cable builder seems broken atm, won't load at all.

The GOAT thefoo.83 used to also make one that had a detachable SCART head via a female HD15. Killer idea!!!
My buddy who makes this is also going to make one - he’s just very bent on making a GREAT sync combiner circuit for his; not something too based off of existing circuits. He makes great stuff!

…also, here’s thefoo’s old design. Miss that guy a lot, he is nice to talk to

Then, is that a good option now if I'm not interested in 480i switching, even for Europe? Never had much luck with VGA boxes, myself.kitty666cats wrote: ↑Tue Jul 08, 2025 1:20 am My buddy who makes this is also going to make one - he’s just very bent on making a GREAT sync combiner circuit for his; not something too based off of existing circuits. Yeah, it’s awesome if you aren’t going to be using 15kHz. I am not sure about PAL, thoughBassa-Bassa wrote: ↑Wed Jul 09, 2025 8:43 pmThen, is that a good option now if I'm not interested in 480i switching, even for Europe? Well, it's for Japanese machines on VGA monitor, anyway. Thks.

Interesting, never heard of these guys but their stuff looks top quality. I actually ended up getting one of those cheap VGA cables you see everywhere (31Khz only) but I'll get one of these in the future, thanks!

Re: Any Dreamcast VGA (Dsub) Cable with switch for 480i?
Apparently it doesn’t have a sync combiner and it outputs RGBHV, which is pretty damn stupid since 99% of VGA monitors accept RGBS with no issue. So I would be careful of that / maybe ask if they could make one with the circuit from one of their Dreamcast SCART cable
Re: Any Dreamcast VGA (Dsub) Cable with switch for 480i?
Speaking of Dreamcast cables. Anyone tried RGC’s component and Scarf cables and compared them?
Re: Any Dreamcast VGA (Dsub) Cable with switch for 480i?
Is this a problem if I'm using an upscaler or, what are the downsides of it being RGBHV only?kitty666cats wrote: ↑Mon Aug 11, 2025 11:02 pm Apparently it doesn’t have a sync combiner and it outputs RGBHV, which is pretty damn stupid since 99% of VGA monitors accept RGBS with no issue. Re: Any Dreamcast VGA (Dsub) Cable with switch for 480i?
Depends on the upscaler. All current scalers I can think of (OSSC, Retrotink) will work with RGBHV. So no downsides if using a scaler, only if connecting through AV equipment or directly to RGB monitors that only support RGBS (or RGsB).
Re: Any Dreamcast VGA (Dsub) Cable with switch for 480i?
The RT5X doesn't have a VGA input, and so doesn't support RGBHV, only RGBS via SCART, you'd need a sync combiner for that. The RT4K CE and RT4K Pro support RGBHV via its VGA port.
Re: Any Dreamcast VGA (Dsub) Cable with switch for 480i?
I'm still using a GBS-C which works with "VGA mode" on the Dreamcast and 240p/480i RGBs with earlier consoles, I'm still looking to upgrade to something newer with HDMI input for other devices though.
I always assumed RGBHV = 480p so I learnt something new I guess. So this would only affect certain CRTs that have a DE-15 input but not RGBHV.

GBSC is exactly what it may have potential troubles with. I think it’s more a problem with *downscaling* RGBHV, but regardless GBSC is just far less prone to any technical problems if you’re inputting RGBS. Though I think you can improve compatibility depending on a 100 ohm resistor on the pins intended for molex arcade inputs next to the VGA input.
GBSC god NoAffinity can elaborate on this far better than myself
