Question about Thunder Force IV ending

Hi everyone!

I know a lot of people here might not understand why I’m asking such a dumb question,
but I’ve been wondering about this for a long time and still haven’t found the answer.

So… here we go!

When you finish Thunder Force IV, you can see some pictures of the Galaxy Federation or of the Rynex.
But there’s one photo I just don’t understand — this one:

I know the Rynex is piloted by a man and a woman.
Is this a photo of them? And what are they doing — hugging? Kissing?
Is the game telling us that these two pilots sacrificed themselves for a noble cause,
and, to add an extra touch of sadness, the picture is saying:
“That’s so sad… the pilots were in love…”?

Oh man, I'm not the only one who had strange theories as a kid. For my part, I thought that the man saw a hole where mice passed through and wanted to take a look at what was inside.

Interesting! I was thinking that both pilotes die at the end of TF IV, wandering in space after ejecting from the Rynex ship.
I have to play TF VI, seems that I missed some crucial information, thank you!
