Tetris Rule Variants?

Post by Blade »

First, to explain, I’m a huge fan of games like Tetris Worlds, Bombliss, and Tetris Effect.

I played the PS2 version of Tetris Worlds and the PlayStation “wobbly” version of The Next Tetris for many years.

Magnet, Scanner, Freeze, Zone Battle, Square, Cascade, Countdown, Purify, Mystery, etc are all very fun modes to me.

So I tried searching online for a dedicated list of “odd rule” Tetris games, but I haven’t actually had much luck in my search.

Most lists give a vague description at best, nor is there a decent compilation of these modes that I’ve seen. Most people are just giving their opinions on favorites, but I haven’t seen a full dedicated list of Tetris variants (cursed or otherwise).

I figure this place would be a good place to start looking, so please help me!
The world would be a better place if there were less shooters and more dot-eaters.

Good question, I would just check out every Tetris game and it's wiki as it might explain the modes it has. There's also tetris wiki I think. Most Tetris games have cool modes.
To name a few

Mickey Tetris
TGM1, 2, 3, 4
Tetris Kiwamemichi
Tetris Card Captor
Pokemon Tetris Mini

"Tetris but you're on drugs" variant: https://harddrop.com/wiki/Tetripz

It was nifty as an MS-DOS game not just because of the game itself but because they also managed to make it rather small in terms of filesize, a neat achievement for its time.

Tetris Effect has a lot of weird variant modes. I also like the NES homebrew game From Below.

You mentioned Tetris Wiki twice, so I imagine you put a lot of faith in the accuracy of their information?
I tend to not have luck when it comes to Wikis having reliable information. :P

I remember playing Blockout a bit (along with Chip's Challenge and Age of Empires) on a Windows 95 laptop I bought off of a friend when I was in high school. Didn't realize it had versions on a few other personal computer platforms.

It's basically 3D tetris.

EDIT: I also had Wetrix+ on the Dreamcast. That might be a bit too far from OG Tetris to count, though.

Latest official version I heard about is Tetris Time Warp, which is part of the Tetris Forever compilation.

They also have Hatris, Welltris, and there’s a DOS variant called Faces-tris 3 (though I hear it could use a revision).

Yoshi is supposed to be a variant of Hatris, and I guess Wario’s Woods as well.

I highly recommend Tetris Plus 1 & 2’s puzzle modes.

Shameless plug-in: BlockOut is a 3D variant of Tetris by Technōs/California Dreams (1989). It seems that only PC Engine Fan X! and I appreciate the game, so I am spamming about the game yet one more time, in order to....alienate potential players from trying it, I guess ("Rando, again?! Get lost with your midly surreal 3D-thingie! This is a 2D forum!")

You can add one more to that list, as I did mention Blockout earlier in this thread. Unfortunately I don't have a ton to say about it, as I don't remember it that well. I don't even remember the music (might have been playing it on mute back in the day, as I didn't really appreciate video game music as much back then as I do now). I'll have to revisit it at some point.

I believe that BlockOut's music is an acquired taste. It sounds like muzak/late night Jazz/quiet storm/early ambient stuff, which is perfect to play very late at night (possibly, while playing the game). In other contexts, I might find it irritating. The game is also an acquired taste because it gets hard very quickly, unless players clear Stages very fast and achieve "Blockouts" (i.e. complete clearances of one or more pit levels without leftover pieces) to reset rank. Some pieces after Stage 30 or so are also really hard to manipulate, honestly. Somehow, I love this title as much as I find most Tetris variants boring (e.g. I never ever liked the original Tetris or any of the TGM titles).

Also, the original computer version of Blockout and even the Genesis and Lynx ports had no music during gameplay.

I would have been playing either a DOS or Windows version.

I can definitely appreciate some easy listening jazz stuff when in the right mood.
