What horror movies/ series are you looking forward to?

I really enjoyed Barbarian, so I'm looking forward to Zack Bregger's Weapons.
Talk to Me was surprisingly good, and the new one Bring Her Back sounds pretty promising..
All three of Ari Aster's films were awesome, can't wait to watch Eddington (although it doesn't look like a horror film... can't say for sure though because I don't watch trailers for films that interest me)

Anybody have an opinion on that Alien TV series and how much it will suck?

More films I haven't watched yet:
- Infinity Pool (Possessor was different from most other horror films and made me want to see more films done by Dave Cronenberg)
- VHS Beyond
- Maxxxine (X and Pearl were amazing. The Sacrament was respectable, and I've been meaning to watch Ti West's other films as well)
- Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 (have this as a 35mm scan along with part 1, which is open matte)

Infinity Pool with actress Mia Goth is quite something else, especially during the trippy dream-like scenes where things easily start "to go south" (if you know what that means). IP does have a bit of an action scene to spice things up if you like those type of movie scenes (which is quite well done in my opinion to move the story/plot along and it does with plenty of aplomb). Could Mia Goth be the next hot "action star" up and coming?

There was a time when IP was available to rent & eventually later, to buy, on Redbox back in the day. Bought it on DVD from a Redbox rental kiosk and was blown away by it and not knowing anything about it -- it's best to watch it "totally blind" without watching the IP trailer either for maximum punch/effect to the audience's senses.

That upcoming Alien TV series titled "Alien: Earth" streaming on Hulu+ on 8/12/2025 looks to be something to look forward to as it takes place within the first Alien film timeline/continuity in A.D. 2125 -- the background scenery is very much "spot on" on the ship that crashes on Earth (that looks in place & matching with the interior shots found within the Nostromo interstellar mining ship is visually impressive). Of course with Ridley Scott as executive producer on it, shows that some serious money, time and thought went into getting it made/done.

The mega conglomerate, Weyland-Yutani, still rules the galaxy with it's space mining & possible planet exploration endeavors with it's huge terraforming processors technology/infrastructure (as shown in both Alien Romulus & Aliens movies). Yes, Weyland-Yutani must keep it's shareholders happy foremost -- but at the end of the day, it's pure greed & profit over trival humans' lives as they're deemed expendable in their never-ending quest for universal/galactic dominance as is on Earth.

I kind of would like the scifi stuff conceptually, like Severance or the schlocky MEGAN movies. It's more pertinent to the forthcoming IRL apocalypses converging all at the same time. Creepy robot people can be as close to ten years away.

But I guess I'm an old man and don't care about movies or TV shows anymore. The last one I really cared about was Ash Vs. The Evil Dead.

The Alien thing looks great visually. If you want more Alien in your life for some reason, and your idea of Alien isn't tied to Ripley or her husband or their adopted newt or the robot she cheats on her husband with or her cat that's been dead for centuries thanks to time dilation, then it'll be great. If you want new ideas and new thoughts, well, you're barking up the wrong tree to begin with. You should be watching the MEGAN franchise if you want something with new and different vibes and aesthetics.

Hey, at least the TV show looks like it's gonna have different kinds of aliens in it. "It's called aliens, we're allowed to have more than one."

Definitely like me a good slice o'horror, but also tragically cursed with a human brain that automatically insta-recycle-bins recommendations unless they're etched into my limbs. Also reckon I'm developing severe attention issues with age, and considering going on an extended digital detox in the hope of a reset, but I digress..!

I'm blessed with having a couple of sibs who love horror modern and old. Coincidentally, we rewatched Hereditary together last weekend and although the term has long worn out its welcome, I'd class it as definitively Lovecraftian, certainly up there with The Void and other homages that aren't direct adaptations (specifically in the case of Hereditary it is highly highly reminiscent of The Thing on the Doorstep, which probably wouldn't work as a scene for scene conversion anyway, but is a terrific ghastly tale). Haven't seen Aster's Beau is Afraid yet, but it's on the list, along with too many other things ffs.

I believe there was a rumour that the guy who directed the Cage version of The Color out of Space has earmarked The Dunwich Horror as his next project. I'll be all over that. The thing about ol' HP Sauce is I find his writing to be tiring to process, but as a concept generator he's the tops. Dagon (2001) is one of my favourite adaptations (even though it was adapted from The Shadow Over Innsmouth). The lighthearted, slightly slapstick nature is what makes it work, imo. Likewise Reanimator. From Beyond is the shit also. I'm rambling, but yeah.

Edit: Bring her Back and Weapons are both arrivals I'm being nagged to go see on the big screen. It used to be unusual to see horror scores over 6.5/10, but it's becoming more common; pethaps collective standards have simply lowered. Barbarian was so ludicrously daft I could only laugh. It honestly felt like that was the aim.

Yeah, initially Richard Stanley planned a Lovecraft trilogy, but Wikipedia says

In March 2025, it was announced [23]Stanley had been signed as executive producer on Michael Zaiko Hall's dark thriller The Palace. John Fessler from Side Street Studios is set to produce along with Ascent Films. Casting is underway with the film due to shoot in late summer in Salem, Massachusetts. The film, which will be billed as “Richard Stanley Presents The Palace”, is described by producers as “a 1960s thriller homage with an underlying commentary on the current state of cinema”.



Btw, watch Stanley's 1990 cyberpunk cult film Hardware if you can, it's pretty cool.

Couldn't agree more on your Lovecraft as a fantastic idea generator comment, his prose is quite stiff and antiquated, but his idea of cosmic horror is simply marvellous.

Barbarian was so ludicrously daft I could only laugh. It honestly felt like that was the aim.

what exactly didn't you like about it? It's certainly hyperbolic like pretty much every horror film, but I felt it worked really well as a, well, horror film; some scenes were butthole clenching tense, and I was very entertained.

Don't get me wrong, I liked it! Certainly enough to see it for a second time after catching the big screen release. But...

...whether it was intended or not, while the first act is genuinely tense, the second introduces the heavily signposted guy we're s'posed to hate ("waddup f*ggit" being how he answers the phone), and adds some bizarre (but funny) comedy elements, like the tape measure scene ; then finally the third act shits the bed entirely with some eyerolling monster physics, and what felt like multuple u-turns with the main character.

I was left very much entertained, but also slightly disappointed that it wasn't tonally the film I expected it to be based on the first act. It starts off as Alien and ends up as Independence Day.

Very well put - you guys might consider me a total pussy for this, but the first 20 minutes alone (which were just very well written conversations) were incredibly uncomfortable for me exactly because we all know these situations from real life. Having these types of scenes in the beginning of a movie makes them feel grounded and makes me dread what's coming a lot more since I can see that whoever wrote the script knows what they're doing. Same for Speak No Evil (which is an incredibly evil bastard of a film).

Yeah the opening scene was top drawer writing and set tensions/discomfort levels appropriately high. You could've heard a pin drop throughout that act at my local cinema, and coincidentally this reminds me of seeing another horror that happens to star Justin Long, Jeepers Creepers. Going into that one with no foreknowledge was pretty intense! At least until the demon is shown onscreen at which point it becomes more of a regular monster movie. But nobody breathed during that opening sequence where he falls down the chute. Definitely what good horror is all about.

Some films are perfectly fine as standalones. For a long time, It Follows (2014) was one of my go-tos for relentless, creeping dread. David Robert Mitchell's name is linked to a sequel, but not sure how I feel about that one. Really hope he resists explaining part one away. Its mystery is its power.

Just saw this. 3 was mostly forgettable. And yes, if you took Pat & Vera out of the equation these films would have way less appeal. Those two bring a kind of warmth and sincerity, which is ironic given how their real life counterparts were repeatedly called out as liars and swindlers.

I suggested the Conjuring films to a horror fan friend (who generally prefers classic 70s and 80s slashers), and he couldn't enjoy them. He's old enough to have been an adult during the Warrens' active heyday and recalls them the way I remember more recent "clairvoyants" being outed as fraudsters (we had one in UK called Derek Acorah, who received quite a bit of ridicule after he was exposed *). I don't think the Warrens got called out quite so directly, but you'd have to buy into all that stuff in the first place to get enraged about it, really. I see it all as entertainment.
