Alltynex and Doujin Shmups

So I recently had the pleasure to play the Alltynex Trilogy. I can't believe I ever had a thought in my head that they would be anything other than amazing.

I love that they are all COMPLETELY DIFFERENT in their mechanics, yet still cohesive as a trilogy. It blows my mind how old these are, yet how fresh their ideas still are to the current day.

Doujin shmups are so interesting to me. Unlike a lot of newer indies I've played, it seems like everyone is 10 years behind what Japanese Doujin were doing. They understand that their is a formula or foundation that they need that was perfected 30 years ago, but they can experiment on top of that.

My question is this: are there any newer Doujins that you guys have been checking out? Anything great or noteworthy? I know how much of their stuff flies under our radar, especially since most of us are westerners of some sort.

I tried Alltynex 2nd and reflex a while ago. They're super good especially Alltynex 2nd its one of my favorites! For japanese doujin shmups try hellsinker or kaikan maybe?

I spent a lot of time playing Kamui, I need to give the other two a more serious go at some point.

I love the doujin shmup scene. Some great ones I would highly recommend:

Graze Counter (the original version, not GM which you can just mindlessly blast through and isn’t nearly as well designed)

Mecha Ritz (and it’s remixed version Steel Rondo - both excellent and worth playing to see the differences)

ZeroRanger (Super fantastic game)

The X.X games but especially Blue Wish Resurrection Plus.

Razion EX was really special, I love that game.

Angel at Dusk has some cool vibes, you can definitely see a strong creative vision with it.

Various Touhou games with 06, 07, 08, 11, 12 and 18 being the best ones.

Some good Touhou fan games out there like Blue Devil in the Belvedere, Concealed the Conclusion, and Hollow Song of Birds are all really great.
