RESOLVED! This was a Sega Saturn ODE topic, now it's a SAROO Cart for SS topic!

Post by Rock Man »

I've had this Phoebe mod for years and my Saturn library is vast. So, I haven't thoroughly tested everything. Just dumped and tested most of it and assumed the rest worked. Imagine my surprise when I learned there were issues with Die Hard Arcade, Batman Forever, and Fighters Megamix. No matter what rom I tried they won't boot up at all OR boot without background music. Were there compatibility issues with these games on Phoebe?

Regardless how do I get these to work? Can't use my discs anymore they are too damaged. I tried redumps however I get the aforementioned results. Help!

EDIT: The crux of this topic has been resolved.

Sorry, don't have the answer here but wanted to point out that it's worth getting a Saroo for Die Hard Arcade alone. No more waiting between quicktime transistions.

Okay number one: My problem here has been resolved! Had to use a weird method by unmounting the disc images using Daemon Tools, open up UltraISO and then right-click the unmounted virtual drive where the image is and then convert to MDF+MDS files! That did the trick. It also helped that someone donated me a more reliable rom set.

Secondly, this is the first I am hearing of the Sega Saroo! I am so buying!!!!! Thank you.

Would you happen to know if it speeds up load times? The load times on MSH and KOF '97 for the Saturn are brutal!

Saroo loading times are about 4x quicker than CD loading times. Most things load immediately or within 3 or 4 seconds.

I'm just going by youtube videos i've watched but the presenter was shocked how fast it was.

Should be about the same as with Rhea/Phoebe, shouldn't they?

SAROO is quicker because the cartridge slot has more bandwidth. It has problems with some homebrew and translation hacks, though.

I see. And doesn't it put at risk the cartridge slot?

Make sure to buy one from a reputable seller so it has the right thickness, beveled edges, and remove it when not in use. I bought mine from JT studios, who uses all new parts.

I recall going down to my local "brick 'n' motar" Toys-R-Us store and they had a Sega Saturn demo kiosk running Panzer Dragoon -- I was blown away by the epic soundtrack and 3D gameplay of it. Eventually, Toys-R-Us marked down brand new Sega Saturn consoles to a mere $99.99 usd on clearance and games were marked down to $19.99 as well. I recall that Target sold the SS console and games were being sold at $19.99 brand new. Even Funcoland sold the SS + games for it also.

At the Dublin, CA-based Stoneridge Mall, Babbage's sold the SS console + games for it indeed.

----------
Electronics Boutique sold some Japanese SS import gaming titles along with the SS Action Replay cart (selling for $39.99 usd brand new) -- for a single brand new JPN SS game import was priced at $79.99 usd each (including Treasure's Radiant Silvergun & even Tecnosoft's ThunderForce V: Perfect System were lined up on EB's gaming shelves for a brief amount of time!).

What should I look for when buying a Saroo? I love ODEs like the Fenrir, but if the Saroo is indeed faster and much cheaper than similar offerings, then I want to give it a try.
What games cant the Saroo run?

What about the Satiator? I'd imagine it's also faster than the drive interface right?

It’s about the same. I saw no improvement in Donpachi compared to original disc.

However I do notice improved loading times with Phoebe/Rhea. Even if it's just slightly.

Here's a SS Saroo cart with a micro SD card with 250 SS games already installed on it and sold through Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Retrotech-Saturn ... 360&sr=8-4

Bought one and it was a matter of true "plug 'n' play" -- of course, you can add or subtract the SS game roms as needed.
