Drinking while going for that 1CC; who does it @_@?!~
I will admit it.. more than once... I was really depressed dying to a TLB with a few pixels of its HP left so I go and pour myself "some" porto to relax and next thing I know I get the clear @_@"...
When I got my first Crimzon Clover Arcade Unlimited 1CC, I was a "little" bit drunk.
Thinking about it... while it can make reflexes worse... I also think it can help by not thinking of too much nonsense while playing.
Sometimes, especially for STG's I grind a lot... after about 100 hours of total playtime, it can get harder to keep focus because silly brain thinks about random stuff.
Especially for STG's which are super route heavy, when there is a lot of dodging you have memorized, the reflexes can also become less important.
Also... I noticed it makes me panic less, and less nervous.
Not being nervous and not shaking is a skill especially with hard clears, and I have become quite good at it.
But... even when not going for 1CC... I think some of my most stupid fun has been playing some crazy mode like Accel in Blue Wish Desire (double bullet speed, lol) when a bit tipsy.
So... whether going for the clear or not... often enough... it makes me smile >_<!~
Yes, I know, alcohol is not good. I control how much I take quite strictly; but I live in a crap place, so sometimes, it is needed to tune out a bit.

videogames in general while drunk can be pretty fun, it will absolutely dull your reactions after about an hour though.

Yeah I'll often game with a beer or two and find I beat a high score.
A little booze is great for getting past some mild anxiety. Think of Dutch Courage, a swift drink to focus away from the anxieties and relax into a social situation.
Just as Dutch Courage gives you the confidence to speak to that person you fancy, sometimes a drink will just give you the extra balls to stop being cautious while gaming under pressure - don't panic bomb, push through some risky dodges etc.. But the same way Dutch Courage can quickly become Dutch Dickhead, too much booze means any benefits from relaxing will be overridden by the dulled reflexes and overconfidence.
But on a serious note, do make sure you're in control of drinking. It's easy for it to hook itself in on the promise of "oh I need this to do better at..." and "just one so I can forgot how shit things are for a bit". Schedule a drink whenever you want to aim for a goal, and you've got two addictive things goading each other on!

Used to drink whisky on an almost daily basis, so I was often slightly tipsy when playing, and it definitely helped. Got my best highscores when I was a bit drunk and really high on weed.
Drinking to get good at shmups is retarded as hell, don't do it everybody.

It’s just poison. It’s neither a help nor a support.

Yes, I sometimes drink while playing shmups. I feel like I do better because of the calmer nerves, but I never get my 1CC's while drunk (or even tipsy).
Re: Drinking while going for that 1CC; who does it @_@?!~
Yes, 100% agree! For me, the control is easy because I am very strict with myself, my diet, so on.TransatlanticFoe wrote: ↑Mon Jun 23, 2025 10:18 amBut on a serious note, do make sure you're in control of drinking.
When I was younger, long time ago, when I had my first hangover... I knew, it was not something I ever wanted ever again. I hated it. I love my mornings, and it ruined my morning. Easy decision @_@"...
So, most of the time, when I drink, it isn't a lot. Usually my hubby and I drink together, and we share one can of beer, or one "standard" glass of porto.
I don't like the drunk feeling too. But, with small amounts, that little "tipsy" feeling, I do enjoy it (esp. on bad news days).
Of course, don't drink to get better; you won't :p ever. It is never my intention to both game and drink, just that sometimes, after my light drink and the day is done, I will just play a few rounds here and there, usually more for crazy stupid fun. But sometimes... I end up surprising myself o_O!~ChurchOfSolipsism wrote: ↑Mon Jun 23, 2025 12:21 pmDrinking to get good at shmups is retarded as hell, don't do it everybody.
I think the bigger thing to consider is: sometimes, it is better not to focus "too" much... I realize generally that runs where I care less, I tend to perform better. And of course a little bit of alcohol helps (for me anyway) in caring less; but there are many other things too!~
Haha, where I am from, the common saying is: "pick your poison/sin."
For me... my light drinking... I like to think that it is my only "big" sin, since I otherwise take my health super serious. I don't take any caffeine (only tea is <3 chamomile & rooibos), I do my own food most days and I don't cook with oil/salt (everything fresh or boiled/steamed), I don't drink any drink ever with added sugar (so no soda; aside from my alcohol, everything else I drink is plain water). Always start my day with oats/museli. And I love my greens, vegetables, and so on! So I think I am quite healthy... and my medical checkup is always very, very good.
Actually, now that I say it, I also think my light diet helps a lot with my focus. I always feel super fresh all day every day! And I feel this is also important to perform well.
Re: Drinking while going for that 1CC; who does it @_@?!~
Not me, I left that kind of stuff behind in college. The physical health risks are not something I want to deal with.

Drinking and watching a screen with a lot of fast moving objects does not sit well with my stomach. But I have found surprisingly I play better after a 10mg THC gummy. Generally I find weed seriously slows my reaction time and in general messes with my coordination, but sometimes for some reason it actually helps me put.

Not a shootie, but recently got an xstation and for the first time in about 10 years, been playing Silent Hill again. Last night had a few beers, then had quite a lot if fun turning off the flashlight and stalking those gray bastards in the school down with the pipe while screwing up the timing more often than not. 10/10 will drink again!
Re: Drinking while going for that 1CC; who does it @_@?!~
It depends on the time of the session, in the afternoon no...but if it's the evening, yes.
In fact some of those few 1CC videos I have were recorded while drunk, I don't understand if it slows down my reflexes or if it gives me that sixth instinctive sense that I need, I don't know..I'll drink to it.
I am part of that circle of people who are often very introverted and who are more "themselves" in altered states, as if I unlocked greater degrees of awareness.
Glad that i'm not the only one

Can't imagine having anything more than a single beer would be beneficial to me..... enough to take the edge off.

Cirrhosis of the liver ain't cool, boys and girls. Play safe.
I suspect familiarity with the game will always give you a better calming sensation for the nerves than a stiff drink will, anyways.

Glad to see I'm not alone! Doing this has to be one of my favorite past times, clear or not; it's just much more fun to play my catalog while drunk, or at the very least tipsy. The type of alcohol doesn't really matter for me, rum, beer, whatever, they're all good for getting into the 'zone'. It definitely helps with nerves, though being fully drunk means most people are probably not going to be able to clear. Maybe being tipsy could be the way?
Some of the most fun I've had has been playing against friends in versus shmups while fun, just a great time. Of course, regardless of it being a versus shmup or regular one, I don't have the ability to properly clear the game or win in that state, but it's lots of fun, and isn't that what matters?

On your decision it's absolutely.

I've definitely gotten some high scores while drinking a beer. It helps take the edge off and make me more likely experiment a little bit with routes and techniques, as others have mentioned. once I get to beer #2 though the potential for high scores is pretty much over but I still have fun.
Re: Drinking while going for that 1CC; who does it @_@?!~
I once saw a documentary where they researched alcohols effect on focus and performance. After the first pint of beer, both focus and performance were higher (test subjects were made to throw darts and kick football between cones), and after the following pints it started to drop rapidly. So everything written here makes sense. And, of course, different people have different tolerance, and tolerance will increase the more you drink, so be careful.

Haha oh wow, that's from the first Silent Hill right?? My hubby just started playing the new Silent Hill 2 over the weekend (Summer Sale discount!) and so far that looks great too!!SuperDeadite wrote: ↑Wed Jun 25, 2025 1:57 amturning off the flashlight and stalking those gray bastards in the school down with the pipe
Haha yes for me this part is the key. I think for times when I really just want to have fun, playing some high-speed mode like Accel in Blue Wish Desire or Boost in Crimzon Clover is the most crazy fun I've had when a bit tipsy. Usually for Boost in Crimzon Clover it makes me throw rank management away and keep the hyper on all the way and then by the time reach Stage 4 bullets are moving at you at the speed of light. You will never get the clear at that point, but it is really a stupid amount of fun.
Oh wow that is interesting! But I do wonder, in the study, did they account for gender? Generally, girls tend to have lower tolerance, and for me the line between "tipsy" and "uh oh" is very super thin lol. That is why most of the time I will share a drink with my hubby, because if I have 1/2 to 3/5 of a can, that is still "tipsy." But full can and I am a bit drunk already and concentration is bye-bye lol.MJR wrote: ↑Sat Jun 28, 2025 7:52 amAfter the first pint of beer, both focus and performance were higher (test subjects were made to throw darts and kick football between cones), and after the following pints it started to drop rapidly. In the SH2 remake, the mannequins will flee from your flashlight, which makes them pretty terrifying when you can see something scurrying away in a flash behind the cornerFaith wrote: ↑Mon Jun 30, 2025 3:55 amHaha oh wow, that's from the first Silent Hill right?? They were men in the study. But that never crossed my mind, since my mom, grandmom and most of my girlfriends always drank like sailorsFaith wrote: ↑Mon Jun 30, 2025 3:55 am Oh wow that is interesting! I do it frequently, and it saddens me to see the demonization of alcohol by some posters in here
I mean sure, it's a poison and people should drink responsively. But I feel like this is all a given, right? We're adults here.
I rarely drink alone at home though, outside of occasionally enjoying a small glass of quality whiskey, for the taste of it rather than the buzz.
But to me, arcade games is a social endeavour. I enjoy sharing my favourite games, exchanging tips, and cheering on friends when they make progress in a game. And being Scandinavian, social situations are always undeniably coupled with copious amounts of alcohol.
I play arcade games on my cabinet at home to learn and practice games when going for 1CCs, but overall I think most of my arcade time might still be spent at my friend's backyard arcade at social weekend gatherings. Of course, there is a bar, and people drink. I don't like the concept of barcades, because it turns the arcade into a casual "retro" backdrop gimmick, but I do think bars in arcades make a lot of sense.
Every year we do an annual streamed 1CC event which has been going for 4 or so years at this point. Being one of the only people there who actually continiously dabble in new games, I tend to have several games submitted to the schedule, and I generally try to keep the more demanding titles with less leeway for mistakes early on the day before too much alcohol has been consumed. Last year I totally failed my Toki 1CC (an otherwise really easy game) probably due to the alcohol. But we had fun, so who cares.
One year ended with me and a friend doing a co-op RodLand 1CC. Very easy game, but it was fun to do given I had played the game like once ever before that event, and we still pulled it off. Throughout the game people would keep pouring shots and left them for us on the control panel to down whenever there was downtime in the game.
TLDR; you don't need to drink to have fun, but drinking is fun

Re: Drinking while going for that 1CC; who does it @_@?!~
My weekday evenings usually involve me playing Warzone or some other online thing on the TV with a glass or two of Talisker and a couple of bowls of the finest cannabis god hath provided, while she plays some bullshit on her tablet. A recent phenomenon involving my acceptance that Fortnite Zero Build is a actually a decent game that I've bought skins for, is that her daughter and I play it. Me on the TV downstairs and her in her room. We've been playing quite a bit of Duos and racked up a few Victory Royales. Life's short and futile enough, I like to self medicate my way through and will likely continue. I don't really 1CC anything unless it's Green Beret or Ghosts n'Goblins.
Re: Drinking while going for that 1CC; who does it @_@?!~
Funny thing is... alcohol always seems to be an easy target.
People hate on me or have criticism against me for drinking 4-5 times a week, even if it just tiny amount (usually try to limit to equivalent 10ml of alcohol per day)...
...but many of these people around me drink soda and bubble tea daily, eat deep fried food daily, some are even 1.5x-2x my weight.
And many don't see anything wrong with eating fast food or oily for breakfast every day. So on.
Like I said before, pick your poison! But don't think yours is better than mine.
Haha we are super opposites then! My hubby and I have a rule we only drink at home (usually together), and on the super rare occasion we drink outside, it is only in each other's company.
So usually no-one knows I drink unless I say it, because when outside be it alone or with friends, I always refuse and I am super strict about this.
I grew up working in foodservice. And drinking is just part of both the cope and culture (for both wrong and right reasons).
So, I think it is a bit hypocritical sometimes when people accuse us of drinking. Because very often, it is a necessary part of what is a crap and very hard job on body and mind.
For me I think 90-95% of my 1CC is without alcohol. Most of the time when I drink and game, it is just to let loose and take the hobby less seriously and just relax!~
