IS THE JUSTICE MIGHTIER THAN THE SWORD...?

Post by BIL »

Boof! It's Super Xevious, the balls-hard For Maniacs revision of Masanobu Endo's genre-making signature. Not to be confused with GAMP No Nazo!

Image

Also of interest is the confirmation of a vert from the other side of Namco canon: the immense and elusive NebulasRay. (ta Marc)

NebulasRay, along with Salamander is one of those janky games that I unironically liked because of the sheer "fun" these game delivers. I also noticed that my submitted replay on Replay Burners starts getting attention as well.

I look forward to you guys playing the game for the first time, it can be merciless at times and the wobbly scrolling will take time to get used to.

I still remember trying it out forever ago in MAME and going "whoaaa WTF!" at the first stage's scrolling  Indeed, it'll be great to see it again. Great replay btw! I didn't watch the whole thing (love me STG stories ;3), but Stages 1-3 were exactly the authoritative Space Acin' this JUSTICE v SWORD epic demands. Image

On one hand, being without power/intranet I miss Super Xevious

On the other, with all the foilbles life is throwing my way, perhaps now is not the time to have Super Xevious beat my ass

This kind of space armada concept art is the coolest shit. They don't make 'em like that anymore!

I'll be going into NebulasRay blind as fuck, can't wait. In my mind's eye, I'm envisioning something akin to G-Darius or RayStorm. Guess I'll wait and see.

It's all so lovably hot-blooded and JASTICE. ^w^ Image Image

Interested to see the return of Assault's "My Tank" phrasing, in FIGHTING RAY aka My Ship. Seems to go back a ways; recently played New Rally-X, via its bonus cameo in Ridge Racers 2 (PS5), where it's My Car vs Enemy Cars. Such an adorable quirk <3

EDIT: A year flew by from the excitement! Or rather a fortnight. Incidentally, this marks ACA's 11th anniversary, one year on from F/A's similarly historic 10th anniversary debut.

Third N entry for the list - I'm surprised Navarone's two equally ancient monochrome buddies haven't arrived yet, haha. BUT THEY WILL ;3

Happy for this one. I have had trouble getting Nebulas Ray to work on emulation.

Has anything changed for this additional price? Better scaling options? Better savestates? etc

AA was always very bare-bones, but they were also cheap. I've had quite a lot of play out of them, so I don't necessarily mind paying more, though it would be nice if they upgraded the UI to reflect the higher price tag.

Nah, just dev costs for a particularly demanding game, AFAIK. They mentioned it in passing on a recent Arcade Archiver episode.

It's kind of a shame Namco was so wrapped up with Sony during the 32-bit era, Nebulasray looks like it was crying out for a classic Saturn port. I've never seen the game before, yet another name I only know from Ridge Racer cars.

Image

But I like the look of it, I think Sōkyūgurentai and Blazing Star seem to have given me an affection for slightly jank prerendered animation.

The entire RR series is such a trip to revisit after lots of STG/ARC time. Entire cityscapes and fictional industries dedicated to Namco lore, with so much STG love. Never used to look twice at F/A Racing and their RAVE WAR car. (a Tekken twofer!) Recently lit up at Racers 2 (PS5), when "Synthetic Life" bloomed from a cute Xevious nod into a Dragon Spirit Jungle AST.

I wonder if NebulasRay had some English-unheralded impact on Japanese STG devs/players. There's so much that Souky and Blazing Star, in particular, seem to reference. Stage 2's cloud dive even has similar BGM to Sakimoto's Descent Into The Sea Of Clouds, haha. And the second boss, a ravenously forest-mulching monster tank straight outta Grand Shell. The fleet demolitions inevitably recall Viper Phase 1, too. Frigates don't just *woop* out; rather exploding and listing in punishing demolitions, evoking frustrated Hishouzame vets who yearned to do more than ding the turrets. Image

OFC this spacewar seam was well-mined by the mid-90s; but it's a game that'll fire up those memories, regardless. I only wish the wobble wasn't quite so dominating, it's quite the necessary caveat. I think it's worth it though. Another caveat, this dude likes Master Of Weapon. Image

Nebulasray reminds me so much of Nexzr. The homing laser is all but identical, and the opening stage against the space fleet is also very similar in tone and concept. I'd be surprised if there were no staff shared between the two.

I would love to play this one. Is this a Hamster release?

On a side note, Perikles did a post on it like 11 years ago now. Wow that's a lifetime ago.

Thanks.

Dang, it's only Switch or PS. Don't have a modern console currently. I'll probably get one so I can play Metroid Prime 4 either later this year or next year, so this Hamster line will also be something to look forward to when that happens.

I swear to God, every post you make is filled with such motivational energy. I, too, despise Harmony Gold and their anime licensing nonsense. I also wasn't aware that this game was a good one. Guess I'll have to give it a try.

Macross: Do You Remember Love? has been in the AV room at Animedford two years in a row now. Technically it was the first film my twins ever saw!
Why is it called the Vic Viper/Warp Rattler? Because the Options trail behind it in a serpent-like fashion, and the iconic front fins are designed to invoke the image of a snake's fangs.

For mrsmiley381,

You can buy the 4K UHD disc of "Macross: Do You Remember Love?" as it has all-English subtitles (a first) and watch it with the entire family. The Macross movie really looks drop-dead gorgeous with it's "frame-by-frame" restoration -- heck, even one Itano missile barrage inside a Melatradi warship features a prominent Budweiser beer can missile if you do a "frame-by-frame" analysis of it.

アーケード アーカイブス BATORANTISU... (`w´メ) (◎w◎;) I've waited a long time for this day. It's a hard one, so say ranking badmans! Well then, chaps. It's a lazy bastard / absentee dad catchup! *coof* I mean...

SUPER BIG BOUNS UPDATE (*'ω' *)

Image Image Image Image

Now, fellas. I'm gonna level with you. I ain't played none of these! I'm too busy RUNNIN DEEZ STREETZ  But let's make the best of it. :o Let's get these shumps billeted!

わっしょい! / [WASSHOI!] (づ ᴗ _ᴗ)づ♡ (´ω`)

BATTLANTIS (1987 KONAMI) This KVLTIC, even METAL AS FVCK Image take on vintage scoot/shoot is feared by even the strong!

D-DAY (1983 JALECO) GUNROAR appreciators will note a rare BOAT SHUMP! It also uses intriguing crosshair fire, ala UPL's esteemed UCHUU SENKAN GOMORRAH, aka JIGOKUSEI WINNEBAGO! I like this one's style, chaps. Nautical misadventure is in my COLONIAL BEAST THRALL blood! PLUS, it's got that vertical terrain 'em up ala ImageFight goin' on - far predating SARAMANDER and DORAGONSPIRIT, even!

STINGER (1984 SEIBU KAIHATSU) Not to be confused with the overseas name of Twinbee! But you know that already, you clever pricks! (`w´メ) Seibu's first game, and first STG! Image Got some interesting ground-based strafing goin' on. Is that a BOMB CHIPS mechanic ala GANFURONTIA / Garegga? :O PS4 truly is the encyclopedic EIEN NO S.T.G. platform in 2025.

KOUKUU KIHEI MONOGATARI, aka CHOPPER 1 (1988 SNK) Lookin' rugged! BATICARU SHOOTINGU as STONE-FACED HARDCORE as it is steeped in nascent tradition! Is that some Tiger Heli BOMBAAA x Saramander subweapons n' terrain? Possibly!

But personally, the biggest news re: LEGEND OF AIR CAVALRY is... the return of SNK to ACA! (see also Innovators Of Violence TECHNOS JAPAN CORP via the recent ACA Scrambled Egg!) Here's hoping SEARCH AND RESCUE might also be Sought And Rescued! It is SHAMEFURU, even !CLIMINAL! that it remains on that shitty-ass SNK 40th Anniversary Collection! Well, let's hope for bright future eh chaps. :3

IRON LION SCION

That's right! Beware I live (■`w´■) (*'ω' *) Gotta redo the listing to account for ACA2/XB/etc.

Image

One Seibu out and another in, as Scion bumps Stinger off the front page! A Xevious-esque where you destroy each stage layer by layer, descending to the final target. Hmm! Not only sounds but even kinda looks RAYER SECTION, tbh! That parallax-viewed metal lattice is straight outta ST2/TEH GRAVITY OF BLUE SIDE

Killer logos on these early Seibus... actually their design sense in general was pretty sharp! See also The Real WIZARD SHOOTING Simulator, Wiz, and them there MAFIA GUN SHOOTINGS. Predating that Untouchables movie, even. One step closer to Raiden II and Raiden DX, perhaps. Hamster's pricktease game is truly unrivalled.

Also Bermuda Triangle, ala CHOPPER ONE, another SNK40th refugee I'm glad to see - but must caveat with where the fuck is Search And Rescue :O Still, good to see! I notice a lot of Ikari & Dogosoken in this one. Besides the LS-30 rotary turret, there's those obnoxiously big honkin' grenades. Many will be enraged by the resemblance to UCHUU SENKAN GOMORRAH, too!
