Unobtainium caps !? (6.3x4.5mm SMD 220uF 4V electrolytic)

Post by ASDR »

I'm a bit stumped by this one.

I'm trying to complete a repair job and after some testing and looking at the schematic I'm pretty sure that four 220uF 4V SMD electrolytic caps are the culprit. I happen to have like half a dozen different 220uF SMD caps in different voltages from different manufacturers all with the standard 6.3mm footprint, but none of them fit. The caps currently installed are just about touching the case and taller ones won't fit. I measured the currently installed ones to be ~4.3mm high while all of mine have the standard 5.4mm height or taller for the higher voltage ones. I had these issues before, for instance 10uF SMD electrolytics are usually ~4mm wide but you can get ~3mm ones, or those low-profile THT ELNA caps that seem to be popular in certain devices, which are sometimes required to make things fit. But for the life of me I can't find a 4.3mm tall 220uF SMD electrolytic capacitor on any of the el-cheapo sites like eBay, AliExpress etc.

I thought about just bodging something like putting a radial cap on the side or something like this, but there's just no space. I could replace them with a tantalum or something like a triple-stacked ceramic 100uF cap, but I don't think that's a good idea. Two of the 220uF caps are used directly on the audio lines presumably as AC coupling caps and I'm not sure anything but the the intended electrolytic caps will do here.

I did a search on Digikey/Mouser/etc. and could only find a single part that would fit the bill:

https://www.digikey.com/en/products/det ... GB/2551044

It's 4.6mm, datasheet says 4.5 +0.1/-0.2, it'll do, I guess. But notice how it's discontinued and won't be restocked. Also no ESR mentioned in the datasheet?

So, what should I do? I kinda don't want to pay 20EUR shipping or whatever it was that Digikey charged, but it seems that's my only option (while supplies last). What would you have done if those caps had already sold out?
