Thanks for the warm welcome! I recently returned to shmups after a long hiatus, I used to play a lot of cave games on the 360 and started out with a Mega drive. I'm currently giving RagingBlasters a try on steam.LookingForPants wrote: ↑Tue Dec 24, 2024 9:39 pmWelcome! Are you currently playing any shmups, Aster? I'm working on Touhou 6 at the moment.

Re: The Self-Introduction Thread
Hello!
I haven't been active in the forum scene for awhile and wanted to explore some video game communities. I stumbled upon a gem here with the shmups forum.
I adore cute 'em ups in particular, such as the Cotton series, Magical Chase, Twinkle Star Sprites, and Twinbee. I am also fond of the "Pocky & Rocky"/Kiki Kaikai series, though admittedly I have only played a port of the arcade original on the Switch and the first SNES installment on emulation. I really should get playing that again!
Admittedly, I am lackluster, but I find myself immersed in the joy and exhilaration of the activity anyway and appreciate the challenge! When my head hurts from a long day of strenuous mental labor and writing, shmups are a sure joy.
I also like RPGs and action RPGs (Soul Blazer/Blader being my favorite). Love me some 2D and 3D platformers. Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon is an interesting one!
I will be mostly lurking for awhile, reading all the interesting posts here. Already, I have encountered many titles I wish to explore further at some point and am impressed with the wealth of knowledge and experience of other users, which I hope to learn from and hope will deepen my interest as well.

Hello there!
Though I've been playing shmups since my childhood, it was just recently that I got obsessed with the genre and took a real deep dive into it, playing through a lot of classics.
I mostly play on the Nintendo Switch, some of my favorites available on it are RayForce, RayStorm, Darius Gaiden, Darius II, Radiant Silvergun, ESP Ra.De, Mushihimesama, DoDonPachi DaiOuJou, Ikaruga, Deathsmiles, Akai Katana Shin, GG Aleste 3, Eschatos, Crimzon Clover, Gunvein, Psyvariar Delta and Cotton Fantasy.
I joined here because I had a question to ask:
viewtopic.php?t=75345
Haven't gotten any replies yet, is there a better place on this forum to ask questions like mine?
I should add that I'm not great at shmups, I mostly play them because they fill me with joy. Other genres I like are JRPG's and puzzle games.

Welcome aboard, great username.
Off-site, there's the Shmups Wiki, too, which will also have tons of high-scoring replays for major titles like Darius.

Might be worth giving the Strategy subforum a go. I think ACSeraph's away currently, but his WIP Darius guide is already quite impressive.RayForceFan wrote: ↑Sun Jan 19, 2025 9:29 pmI joined here because I had a question to ask:

Re: The Self-Introduction Thread
Hi everyone, I recently joined so that I can chat with fellow shmup fans and broaden my horizons.
From the days of my 48k Spectrum back in the early 80's, shmups have been my favourite genre, though admittedly if you asked me to name games I could probably only remember a handful I've played because I've tended to pick them up, play them for a while and then move onto something else.
But there is one old shooter that I picked back up playing about 5 years go and have obsessed with ever since... R-Type...
Thanks to Arcade Club opening in the UK (Bury, Leeds and Blackpool) I've been able to play R-Type regularly since around 2019 and finally cracked it a couple of years back with my first 1CC. Since then I've been trying to push my high scores further by identifying scoring opportunities and adapting my play style.
My current highest score (no auto-fire) is 1,548,700 with video evidence and I'm working on pushing this as far as I can. I believe this is the highest non-auto score ever achieved, happy to be corrected if it isn't (please let me down gently!)
So, if anyone loves R-Type and wants to chat about tactics I'm all ears.
I'm more of a patten based shooter fan and have never quite got into bullet hell games, but if there's any recommendation for a 'starter' bullet hell game I'm up for trying it out.
Thanks all!

Hello everyone!
Just a fan of the Thunder Force series. I started straight away with the best: Thunder Force IV.
I'm slowly starting to collect shmups on MegaDrive and also on Dreamcast.
Apart from Thunder Force, there are also Gynoug (Genesis), Under Defeat (Dreamcast) and Elemental Master (Genesis) which I really like.
I'm programming a shmup, Thunder Force Heaven (link https://triganov.itch.io/thunder-force-heaven). I still have a lot to learn, so if you could give me some feedback that would be great

Cool start; but you may want to be a little bit careful when using copyrighted assets like sprites from published games. I know you are not making money with this, it's a free game, but some publishers / copyright holders have acted notoriously prickly about it in the past. Make sure you have some plan B ready if you get an order to take this down, as it happens from time to time with projects like this.WitnessOfTheFall wrote: ↑Sat Feb 15, 2025 8:55 pm Hello everyone!

And.. Just in case someone comes here to make any counter arguments... I see lot of discussions when same circumstances arise, where people jump out to say that "No they won't do it, why they would possibly do it, this is not making any money, this is too small for their radar"... and then act shocked and outraged when the game gets taken down.
But if you acknowledge the risk and are fine with it then sure, have fun!

Thanks for warning me, you're right. That's funny beacause I have this discussion about copyright recently on Itch.io forum. One guy play my game and ask me to activate donation in order to give me few dollars as a encouragment. But I do not precisely for the reason you quote in your message.MJR wrote: ↑Sun Feb 16, 2025 6:59 am

Hey guys, I've known about shmups.com for quite a while but I thought I'd finally get round to joining. I have played a few shmups over the years (Ikaruga, R-Type, Mushihimesama) and large variety of other games. I once got close to 1CC-ing Ikaruga on the Gamecube but then just... Stopped for some reason. Gotta finish it properly some day.

Hey folks,
I am joining this community, because I already used it for a while now and had some open questions and thought the heck its time to sign up.
I love to connect analog to digital and vice versa, try to solve problems surrounding that issue. Its sometimes like a puzzle, sometimes like engineering, and sometime relying on old tech stuff which appears nowadays like from retro-future world. Since I got hands on a Trinitron 21" crt-tv a couple of years ago, I added a 14" version of it and 17" trinitron monitor-display from sony to my collection.
I went with softmodding an old Wii for my first 240p experience, hooked up my PS3, my PC, Blurayplayer to my tubes. With my corio2 I had plentiful of opportunities and paid little to nothing for it.
To see a crt-picture with old tapes, DVDs and private recordings is something which brings me back personally to the times where I grew up in the 90th and 00nds. Modern content watched through a tube is kinda like a magical experience, muddy content looks watchable, its kinda like looking out of a window even with mediocre quality. I wish they would be sharper with desktops, but video is just perfect to me.

But …. Did you spam the Pocky&Rocky-devs emails and social media with the request to make “strafe” a dipswitch option in the game ? Even if the option decreased the max speed/volume of fully auto ?

Hello, from Los Angeles, CA!
I’m SailorLodestar on Arcade Projects. I just now joined here since my interest as of late has been pretty focused on shmups.
So far I’ve collected
Progear
Dragon Blaze
Tengai
Akai Katana Limited Edition Exa Label
Mushihimesama
Gunbird 2
Espgaluda II
And I plan to get a few other exA releases soon.
I’m looking forward to learning more about the community. Especially what kind of events / meetups are held as I’m interested in hosting in the future.

Hi great to be on this forum.
I’m a moderate gamer, but I operate a repair and restoration business for all vintage electronics, mainly crt tech. I studied electronics and achieved a degree then went to work for Sony in R and D. In later years I moved away so I left the factory and took my qualifications in tv and radio servicing here I ran a repair shop repairing all manufacturers CRT’s, VCR’s and HiFi. I’ve probably a unique outlook on crt tech as I’ve seen all manufacturers at first hand when these were in the shops new from the late 80’s through to final production of CRT’s.
Hope to help others as well as learn something for myself. Cheers

Nice to meet you all,
I work at a grocery store, just graduated from university in economics, mainly play on PS Vita and use various exploits to get NES, PCE, PS1, and PSP games on it without hacks.
My introduction to shmups was Star Soldier 64. Couldn't understand why anyone would play it when there's Star Fox and Zelda. But fast forward ten years and I refuse to play most modern games with the exception of time efficient genres like shmups and pinball. I own every PCE hucard shmup. I used to play them on my turboexpress, then I bought a coregrafx with turboeverdrive pro to get PCE CD games on the turboexpress and coregrafx, but now I mainly use my Vita since discovering the PCE exploit about a year ago.
I've loved youtubers like STGWeekly and Bithead1000. My favorite games currently are Parodius Da and Daisenpuu for PCE, Gunbird on PS1, and then some Zen Pinball 2.
I find it hilarious that 99% of gamers just do not know or understand shmups at all. I've tried telling I don't know how many people that I like shooters (they think I'm referring to FPS), then shmups (they still somehow think I'm referring to FPS), then I just gave up and now keep it to myself.
Good shooting everyone.

Hello, can't recall when I made this account, but I think I had a previous one which got erased..?
Then there was the account I had while I worked at a certain publisher of shooting games on Steam and consoles, but no longer have access to...
I think I know some of you personally, and have worked with others of you in my professional capacity in "the games industry" (tm)
Either way, nice to meet you all and I hope to pop in occasionally for some shoot 'em up banter.

Hi everyone! I've been lurking these forums for years but decided to create an account.
I've been playing shmups for decades on various platforms, SMS, SMD and arcade mainly.
I'm currently making homebrew games for the SEGA Master System and have made 2 games so far, and in the process of making a 3rd. This forum has been a great help so far.
Thanks!
