I recently bought a new 7x1 hdmi switch. According to the specs it should detect an input automatic. I have connected:
- Nintendo switch
- 3do with a GEM
- NES classic
- SNES classic
- C64 mini
The Nintendo switch works great on all inputs. When I turn it on the led on the corresponding input on the hdmi switch turns on. When I turn the console off, the led turns off.
But... any of the other consoles give me problems. Autodetection is all over the place. As soon as I connect any of them it doesn't work properly anymore. I do get an image and sound using manual switching.
Furthermore... when I disconnect the power on any of these 4 consoles and then connect the hdmi cable (attached to the console) to the switch, the led for that input on the hdmi switch will still turn on, even thought here is no power to the console. This happens with the mini consoles as well as the modded 3do. This only happens in the 4 inputs I initially installed the problematic consoles on. The other 3 inputs don't show an indication led when I connect to them.
Also... with no output cable connected to the hdmi switch, the indication light for "output cable cable connected" remains on.
Could there be something to these devices that messes up hpd for example? I used a smaller 5x1 hdmi switch before this new one and never had any problems like this....

Re: 7x1 hdmi switch problems with autoswitching
I don't think I've ever seen an adequate explanation as to why this sort of behavior happens, but it is a common occurrence with automatic HDMI switches where things just don't work. I am also not aware of a method to fix individual devices or HDMI switches. The only solution I know is to use a different automatic switch. There is an entire thread on this forum dedicated to this kind of information.

I use an army of chained together Vorke switches in my own setup. They get things done for the most part. Prior to that I would have switches that didn't like some equipment. Unfortunately this info is getting quite old and you probably can't find most of the recommended equipment.
Long story short I think you'll have to try a different automatic switch. They are not created equal.

I think the problem here is that some stuff, even when turned off but plugged in, continue to send some kind of signal down the HDMI cable. I have this issue with the Analogue Pocket Dock, I essentially have to leave it unplugged from my auto switcher. Even when turned off it just constantly sends a signal and screws shit up. Nothing else I have hooked up does it.

That is what I think. Even when the consoles don't have power plugged in, but the hdmi cable is connected, the corresponding port on the hdmi switch STILL shows an active LED. I suspect the hpd is doing something. The only difference between my previous switch and this new one is 4k@30Hz vs 4k@60Hz capability. I might take a look at the ic's used in the switches. See if I can find something there.Johnpv wrote: ↑Mon Mar 03, 2025 2:11 am I think the problem here is that some stuff, even when turned off but plugged in, continue to send some kind of signal down the HDMI cable. I've never had that problem if stuff wasn't plugged into power. There's no way for it to be sending an HDMI signal if it has no power connected to it. My issue with the Analogue Dock goes away as soon as I disconnect it from power.unstablewarpfield wrote: ↑Mon Mar 03, 2025 7:18 amThat is what I think. That's what I thought! I'd like to see what the hdmi pins are doing in that case. Might hook up my scope to it one day to see what is going on. For now I've ordered another switch to see what that does. I can't stand not knowing what causes this.Johnpv wrote: ↑Mon Mar 03, 2025 3:26 pmI've never had that problem if stuff wasn't plugged into power. Re: 7x1 hdmi switch problems with autoswitching
Soldered a 1k pulldown on pin 18 of port 1 of the hdmi switch since it was keeping this pin at 2.4V when a console without power but with hdmi was connected. This made it detect an input where there was none. I tried 470 ohms but the Morph didn't like that so I went up to 1k. Detection is functioning as it should now on the Nintendo mini consoles. Console on is detection led on, console off is detection led off. Unfortunately the C64 mini is still having thesame issue. I'll have to look a bit more into that

Are you sure about the pin number? Looking at pinouts pin 18 is +5V.
