The Wii has four standard Gamecube controller ports, so you should be okay if you just use existing PS2 to GC controller adaptor. However, I don't know if those ports will work with anything besides GC games.

I don't see it either, however, I'll venture a guess we're looking in the wrong direction on where the shmup market is going to go. While I believe we won't be seeing much of shmup games for sale in stores with disks in dvd cases, I do believe the online marketplaces for the new consoles will be the new places to keep watch on. Last I heard, Geometry Wars' success caused some 3-6 other shmups of the type to appear on the Xbox 360 marketplace for sale for around $10-ish each. Sony's announcements and (implied by example) intent to outright copy everything Wii and 360 have done indicates that Sony's online service will also function with the ability to buy online and download original Indie games to the PS3 for also a $10-$20-ish price.
We must also remember that nobody really knows how the Wii's online game downloading will take place, from the online browsing, to the online buying processes. If we already know for fact that Wii will let us download the old Nintendo games, the intent and ability for Nintendo to let original games be bought online and downloaded isn't impossible, nor may seem all that difficult to add; just as long as they don't piss every indie dev off with their crazy licensing fees.

The elimination of packaging and distribution will keep the price down and the availibility of a marketplace shmup pretty high.

Basically, we should be finding out who and checking in with all the indie developers who are making similar games like Geometry Wars for the new consoles with games only available through online marketplaces. Or maybe, just maybe the indie developer will be so small we could actually petition them to crank out a shmup. The style we like.

Jumping ahead even further, if all kinds of indie devs are going to Xbox Live Arcade (and assuming the other 2 consoles later), that must mean the development process for getting the actual games onto Xbox 360 is somewhat or greatly simplified. Who knows, maybe online console development information could be sent to people like ABA games, then we could get ports of Gunroar and Tumiki Fighters on the next gen consoles!

A lot of guesswork. But the potential is all there.

I've concluded that many people on this forum are hyper-critical nit pickers unhappy with anything and everything.

Personally, I'm excited by the Wii. It's the cheapest next-gen console at an alleged price tag of $250 or less. It plays old-school console games (SNES, NES, MegaDrive, and PC-Engine). It has a classic controller to play those old-school games. It has an integrated Opera web browser.

And if you think the Wii controller is a gimmick, wait until you play it. I attended the E3 convention and the Wii demo was simply amazing. I'm looking forward to the shotgun attachment and play duck hunt.

N64 and GC, I rest my case.
For 2D I'd say PS3.
PS2, I rest my case.

AHEM! *clears throat* The Gameboy Advance and now the DS are perfect examples of how much Nintendo loves 2D - and they still love it, since they release a pure 2D game (with polygons in it but 2D gameplay) with their main mascot Mario recently, which was a huge tribute to 2D oldschool gaming. On their newest console till now. GBA owners even got a UNIQUE Metal Slug game instead of ports that anyone with a PC that`s capable of MAME could play anyways. Nintendo doesn`t promote shmups very well, but they doesn`t hate 2D in general!

And considering that after all there simply won`t be a dedicated 2D console on the market anymore, Nintendo is moving in the direction of the retro-gamers as well as they do towards the very innovate ideas. A console that unites all of the major 16bit consoles PLUS tries to innovate very hard is more than we could ever have dreamt of. In these days my affinity for Nintendo is starting to grow more again actually.

I dunno how the Wii will fare in terms of shmups but i think it will be cool and i am looking forward to stuff like monkey ball and wii sports. i think it will be good fun.

And the "nintendo hates 2d" is the most unfounded silly statement about the games industry i heard in quite a while.

I agree, i was originally going to get a Ps3, but after
the $1000 price that, Sony can go jump.

I have decided to get a Wii, stupid name, Nintendo isnt a fav
game company with rgards to titles, but i am actually excited
about the Wii becuase Nintendo are actually promoting it as a
GAME CONSOLE, not a next gen super all in one marketing hyped up
rubbish hardware that M$ and $ony are doing.

Never thought i would be buying a Nintendo Game system.

Same here. My plan is to get a Wii at Christmas, along with the Metal Slug Anthology. My older daughter plays my GC all the time, so I don't have much worry that my Wii will sit idle. Once an Animal Crossing or Pikmin game comes out, it will be getting tons of use.

That said, Nintendo better deliver on the promise of promoting smaller developers. Chaos Field is a nice start, but...
