Re: Shmup Related Questions That Don't Deserve a Thread
Out of pure curiosity I asked ChatGPT 2 questions
I asked only for the best SHMUPS according to him (he only named 9).

(ok he technically doesn't play them, I hope, even though he claims he does
)
Then i asked what are HIS favorite games in general, ignoring anyone's tastes (mine, collective, critics), but based only on HIS preferences.

definitely surprised, and I didn't expect him to bring up Ikaruga
but not even Ninja Gaiden Black and Vanquish...or Outrun 2 and Metal Slug 3...I expected more "generic" answers
At least he has good taste
I wonder if he has also observed this forum at this point
maybe for the word "SHMUPS"
I wonder if it gives you the same answer.

Re: Shmup Related Questions That Don't Deserve a Thread
lol ChatGPT is pretty hardcore if it... uh... "plays" modded XCOM 2 and Mars Matrix. I'd expect some boring safe answer like Super Mario Bros. 6000 or whatever they're at now, but sure enough it likes XCOM instead.
Re: Shmup Related Questions That Don't Deserve a Thread
I actually expected Fortnite/Minecraft/COD/GTA/FIFA as answers...certainly not Vanquish and Ninja Gaiden Black LMAO

And maybe for SHMUPS he would have mentioned Galaga/Space Invaders... I definitely didn't think he would bring up VIPER PHASE 1 LOL

What are the default keyboard controls for Crimzon Clover? I changed the controls and can't remember what it was before. Also how do I start a 2 player game?

No news for a date for Raiden Fighters Remix?

I'm thinking of going for the clear, though I know this one gets pretty tough by the end. How's this one compare difficulty wise to some other games in the genre?
Are you not supposed to just stick with your plane's default weapon if possible? It's the only one you can raise to max level isn't it? I was a little confused by the design intent there. A lot of games have one weapon that's obviously the best and the others are penalty weapons, and I thought maybe they were trying to invoke that deliberately, with each plane having a different "best" weapon.sumdumgoy wrote: ↑Thu Feb 06, 2025 2:33 am Depends on the ship you use, speed-wise. The faster one is better for dodging, but its default weapon is only good for point-blanking and, as you said, the game gets increasingly hairy near the end, which makes that weapon impractical as hell. Trouble with any ship's default weapon is that the power-ups start as your default, then eventually switch to other weapon options. So, that makes it trickier with the fastest plane, having to wait and hoping you'll be clear enough to pick up the better weapon.
Difficulty-wise? Well, it's not a bullet hell (though Stage 6 comes close), but I munch through more credits than you by the sounds of it. Nowhere near as punishing as the Strikers 1945 series, but it's no Tiger-Heli, either.
Actually, now that I think about it, the spike in 19XX is pretty well balanced for difficulty!
Let me know how the final two stages and bosses went for you.![]()

Haha. I feel like it basically just mined this website for the answers.
You're sure to be in a fine haze about now, but don't think too hard about all of this. Just go out and kill a few beasts. It's for your own good. You know, it's just what hunters do! You'll get used to it.
Re: Shmup Related Questions That Don't Deserve a Thread
I definitely think so especially when I read Viper Phase 1. But Ninja Gaiden always mentions it instead ahahah even if you ask for other genres o_0
Re: Shmup Related Questions That Don't Deserve a Thread
Likely just because nobody on the internet discusses Mario games in this context. I think these answers are pretty much what you can expect to be the internet's hive mind picks.

If returning to the shmup genre keeps telling me one thing, it's this: RTFM!

For me, the big forehead-slapping moment was realizing that you can charge your bombs. You cancel bullets both when you start holding the button and when you release, so you can kind of get two bombs for the price of one every time.
Re: Shmup Related Questions That Don't Deserve a Thread
I’m setting up batrider japan ver. b on retroarch and some weird shit is going on. Im trying to turn on the special stage and it isn’t working with the nippon region active. But it does work with the other regions.
I didn’t have issues like this setting it up in mame. Anyone know what’s up with that?
Also, if I’m using Japan version B but set it to a different region like Europe for example, does that change the version? Or is it still considered Japan B
EDIT: although it’s labeled Japan version B, I think it’s a different version because I just realized the extends are automatic rather than dropping.

In the PS2 port of Dai Ou Jou there's four difficulties to choose from, one of which is Easy. Just out of curiousity: how far off is Easy from black label?

I've read that it has to do with the dip switches for difficulty selection, and apparently it doesn't have a noticeable impact on bullet patterns themselves, but rather impacts the rate at which rank goes up. Don't quote me on that though, I've only played the PS2 port once or twice years ago.

I see! The reason I wondered was because I'm currently practicing black label and during a couple of the upcoming weeks I'll only have access to my PS2 and I thought "I wonder how much practicing on the PS2 will throw me off when coming back to black label".BareKnuckleRoo wrote: ↑Tue Feb 18, 2025 2:21 pm I've read that it has to do with the dip switches for difficulty selection, and apparently it doesn't have a noticeable impact on bullet patterns themselves, but rather impacts the rate at which rank goes up. Re: Shmup Related Questions That Don't Deserve a Thread
even on easy dips the game may overall be harder lol. you'll get less hypers, i think your hitbox is slightly bigger too. but it's basically the same game so i dont think you're going to ruin yourself on BL by having to play WL for a while

Re: Shmup Related Questions That Don't Deserve a Thread
Thanks for the input!
And speaking of input, I've also been playing around with PCSX2 (since the TV isn't always available I also play emulated). The consensus still seem to be that the input latency on that emulator is too high to be considered viable. But I've had zero problems with it. What's up with that? Here's a quick test I did (youtube link), I got 2 frames. I didn't record more but it's similar in other games. I got my 1CC in Gigawing Generations on that emulator (I went emulator over the real thing because of the savestate practice).
Edit: I almost feel guilty even talking about emulation, I swear I have the games.

Re: Shmup Related Questions That Don't Deserve a Thread
I tried God Hand on it a while back and there was definitely noticeable input latency. Where are you reading about it, though? Keep in mind that there was a major engine update recently to PCSX2 that was supposed to boost performance, so any discourse about the emulator prior to that may not accurately reflect the emulator's current performance (I haven't tried the latest version, doesn't run on my machine).Starfighter wrote: ↑Wed Feb 19, 2025 8:33 amAnd speaking of input, I've also been playing around with PCSX2 (since the TV isn't always available I also play emulated). Reddit, gaming forums and random hits on duckduckgo, but as you say, most of them are a bit on the older side and would probably pre-date the changes. Some were newer though, but I guess it can also vary depending on what hardware is used, and perhaps even which game.

Actually, now that I think about it, I have actually played PCSX2 recently playing the recently translated Tales of Rebirth with friends over Parsec, and considering it was local gameplay over the internet there wasn't too much input lag, a noticeable amount you'd expect from Parsec, but hardly unplayable, and about the same as when we tried the Metal Black PC release in co-op. So it's quite possible the latest update that overhauled the emulation has significant input lag reduction.

Well, I actually have God Hand as well so I tried it out now, and I've got 5 frames! Needless to say, if I want to play that one, I'll stick to my physical copy.BareKnuckleRoo wrote: ↑Wed Feb 19, 2025 5:59 pm Actually, now that I think about it, I have actually played PCSX2 recently playing the recently translated Tales of Rebirth with friends over Parsec, and considering it was local gameplay over the internet there wasn't too much input lag, a noticeable amount you'd expect from Parsec, but hardly unplayable, and about the same as when we tried the Metal Black PC release in co-op. Re: Shmup Related Questions That Don't Deserve a Thread
How are you measuring this delay? For me it takes 2 frames for the PCSX2 OSD to register an input and then there's another ~2.5 frames from DOJ itself, which about matches my feel of the game. Same thing with God Hand being 7-8f end-to-end.
BTW I find it more likely the source of the latency improvements is the variable/configurable PresentationInterval which has been implemented for a little while now (the settings under Emulation -> Frame Pacing). Before that the emulator was effectively vsyncing to a 2 frame delay all the time. Performance improvements are mostly going to mitigate latency in games which were already bottlenecking on performance. But PS2 emulation is a complete minefield and I have no real idea what I'm talking about, it's absolutely believable specific games find improvements through strange means.

I've got around 50 hours on Gradius on PCSX2, played at different periods (it used to be quite unpleasant a few years ago).
I've just played it again, out of curiosity, and I think it has massively improved.
It got better when they released Optimal Frame Pacing, but now it's something else.

Re: Shmup Related Questions That Don't Deserve a Thread
I didn't measure it "professionally" so to speak, I simply checked that the PCSX2 OSD was identical to the input checker thingy in Windows (which might have a frame or two of input latency as is, I have no means to measure that) and then I recorded the screen in 60fps and slowed it down to 1fps to be able to count. It's more of an indication, I guess. I'm contemplating hooking up a LED to the port of my controller to be able to measure in a more complete way.

Does anyone know if Super XYX on steam has a training mode with stage/boss select or something similar?

Apart from Options and Quit there's only Play and Arcade, no mention of a training mode or stage select in the options or after selecting Play/Arcade.

What's the most recently released game that has speed powerups? I mean like original release date/year, not rereleases, of course. I was thinking of Tatsujin Extreme today and about how people are probably going to complain about it having speed powerups, which probably died a long time ago. The most recent one that I know of is Gradius V.
