Air Gallet - 1945 Striker - Non Fantasy Type Games
Hello All,
Can you please recommend, or provide a list for NON-Fantasy type shoot'em up games? I really enjoyed playing Air Gallet, as well as 1945 Striker series (Air Gallet's modern military type is a favored one)
Many thanks!

These are some more "down-to-earth" shooters:
The Raiden series (throws a bit of space sci-fi in there as well)
Raiden Fighters (different series) - modern military theme, excellent games
Battle Garegga - dieselpunk, WWIIish theme
Under Defeat - WWII theme and designs
Ketsui - sort of modern military, with a lot of impractical-looking endbosses (sort of right at home with Air Gallet's final boss ha ha)
Of this list, I'd recommend the Raiden Fighters series first and foremost.

Depending on what kind of stuff you're into, check out Toaplan's Fire Shark (AKA Same! Same! Same!) and Flying Shark (Hishouzame). They're both wartime shooters. Not sure what wartime exactly. Fire Shark has a pretty fantastical flamethrower weapon, but I assure you it's awesome. Also: you would be hard pressed to find any shmup with realistic weapons.
If steam punk isn't too out there, you could try Giga Wing and/or Giga Wing 2. The planes are some WWI looking jetfighters, IIRC. There's also a sweet train fight (I think there's one in each of the three games, even, but I've only played the first) I'd say it's reasonably down to earth
Varth (Capcom) is another one that might work for you. I'm not really clear on what the setting is, but it looks pretty "realistic" based on the first couple stages

Yeah, I tried to keep the sci-fi in my list to a minimum. I mean c'mon, Progear?

Shouldn't Truxton 2 be Sci Fi like Truxton? Also, I looked up Batsugun, and there's supposed to be cybernetic enhancements and shit, so probably not exactly as grounded as Flying Shark. I don't think I would have guessed sci fi from the first couple stages, though. I suppose I'd have to play it again to be sure.

Truxton II mainly reminds me Dodonpachi designs
Also look at the RAY series: Raystorm, Raycrisis, Rayforce.

Re: Air Gallet - 1945 Striker - Non Fantasy Type Games
Hey, I know that in Air Gallet the final boss is a giant demon statue, and the Strikers games are full of robot bosses, but there's nothing remotely modern-military about ANY of the Ray- games. Transforming Macross robots, Gundam robots, laser spewing tanks... Obviously, there's already a heavy degree of fantasy in any shootemup (impossibly slow bullets, 2D movement, etc.), but OP is asking for a certain theme, not "cool games in general." It's like listing ESPRa.De. because it takes place in present-day Japan.
EDIT:
Task Force Harrier
Well, the first stage does have your jet blasting through an underwater area, and a giant enemy crab robot later in the game.LordHypnos wrote: I don't think I would have guessed sci fi from the first couple stages, though. I suppose I'd have to play it again to be sure.

Yeah, I guess now that you mention it it is kind of weird for a jet to be underwater. haha.EmperorIng wrote: Well, the first stage does have your jet blasting through an underwater area, and a giant enemy crab robot later in the game.

Indeed, Air gallet is a mixed gameplay of Hishouzame and Batsugun, and the developer Banpresto is also behind the PS1 port of Twin Cobra and Tiger heli

Why don't you try modern Raiden games like Raiden 3 to 5 ? Of course the term sniper tank is still available but they add more bullet make the game looks more like bullet hell

Batsugun isn't really science fiction like it said in the wikipedia, apparently because it uses Raiden elementsLordHypnos wrote: ↑Mon Jun 16, 2014 7:16 pm Shouldn't Truxton 2 be Sci Fi like Truxton? (tanks, ships, fighters jets,...) featuring more bullet. It is like a bullet hell Raiden
