PSX -> USB (Mac)

Post by PaCrappa »

I've been fiddling with MAME a little bit lately and this "Gravis Gamepad Pro" is unbelievably shitty.

I'd really like to hook my PS1 Namco stick up to my computer. A Saturn pad for travel would be nice as well.

What do you guys think are the best solutions?

As always, thanks in advance.

Maybe my personal experiences with USB are atypical, but I found that with a couple of USB converters I tried, there is a small, but noticeable, lag when buttons are pressed. If your PC has a parallel port (the kind that printers used to use), I would recommend getting a parallel port adapter instead. Windows won't detect it by itself, so you'll need to download some drivers for it. Fortunately there are already some good drivers out there. The one that I always use for my PS->Parallel converter is called PPJoy.

I use this to hook my Hori Real Arcade Pro up to my PC. I don't notice any lag. Windows XP auto-detects it and sets it up by itself. There's a driver disc included on floppy, but you only need to install that for rumble support.

I usually just use a cheap Radioshack PS2->USB adaptor. Works fine for me, never noticed any lag, although I don't do any hardcore gaming on the PC. Link.

Otherwise, I really like the Xbox 360 controller. I wasn't a fan of the original Xbox S pad, but it feels like they got everything right with the 360. I think I might even like it better than the Playstation pad. The wired one works on PC's and there will be a wireless adapter coming soon to use the wireless pad on a PC.

magic box does saturn, ps, dc, you can get it at jandaman.com

That's the only one I have any real experience with tbh but it's worked pretty well for me. windows autodetects it, also

Thanks boys :) I probably should've mentioned that I'm using a Mac at the moment. Anyone got hands on experience with these gadgets in conjunction with Apple stuff?

As a matter o' fact, yes. :D
I've got a generic PSX/N64 USB adapter I bought off Lik-Sang.com ages ago that worked flawlessly on my Mac. I'll test out the Radioshack adapter to see if it'll work tonight or tomorrow. There's also a driver for the Xbox 360 controller available for OSX.

Most of these *->USB converters stick to the USB HID spec, so in theory any modern OS (i.e. not win98) will be able to use them without any configuration.

I thought some folks might be interested to know that through pure happenstance I ended up with a Radio Shack brand converter. I plugged it into the Mac and it worked perfectly with MAME.

I'm about to set up a Windows machine for Imperishable Night and will report on how well the adapter works with Windows.

Apparently Radio Shack stocks these things which means they should be readily available to anyone in the USA.
