At least be careful if you do FFS! That said, he's a very entertaining chap. He's right about slapfighting too. Holy cow that shit is depressing to see catch on. I can highly recommend Power Pak's recent video on the Doom 2 mod "My House."


I don't want to spoil the content too much, but you might want to first read the original post on Doomworld before you dive into it. Or if you are a Doom Mod player, you might actually want to play the mod first before you watch the video.

You can grab it in the first post of the Doomworld thread, but make sure you go the google drive and grab the pk3 file and not the wad file. The stand-alone wad file is not the actual game, but I won't say why that's true here.

Without giving away any of the content itself, the most impressive thing about this mod is that it is able to basically add a new game engine inside of Doom 2 as though the original game is a wrapper for the new one. This leads to an experience which does a lot of things that Doom could never do by itself, but it only uses those enhancements very selectively to subvert player expectations. It's pretty genius and I hope to see more things like this coming out of the community now that the bar has been raised.

I love the shit out of this channel.

There's that Game Sack vid where they roast gaming youtubers, with a Metal Jesus send-up that goes:

"I need a hidden gem right now!"

"Here's a hidden gem - Super Mario Brothers 3."

People are way too interested only in things they know about, and learning about games I know nothing about feels nice. If I didn't explore a little, I wouldn't be able to spam the Last Armageddon PC-E battle theme everywhere, or appreciate how its storyline parallels our current reality so well.

All those gaming boomers repeating the line "I don't play turn based games, but I really enjoyed Baldur's Gate 3!" Yeah, no shit you would enjoy something that isn't the same game you've played a million times with a cosmetic reskin. The only reason they played BG3 is because it was trendy to do so. I have nothing but disgust for these lemmings.

Shin Megami Tensei fans might enjoy Marsh's channel. I really respect the hell out of the man for his dedication - he played Majin Tensei and Last Bible 2 all the way to the end. Even I couldn't do those things! While the quality ratio has gone up and the quantity ratio has gone down a bit in modern times, there's just too many damn games under this franchise for a single person to play.

If we're taking a zoomed out view of it, media has always been that way. The signal to noise ratio of decent content has been low since the invention of the printing press.

What really freaks me out is how the extra stupid stuff seems to rise to the top. Which I guess isn't exactly new either; National Inquirer and New York Post always made for a more compelling read than the Times or the Post or what have you. But it seems especially unsavory on YouTube to witness these horrid man-toddlers like Metal Jesus and Nostalgia Critic. Gives me the heebies.

Then again, the view numbers on pretty much all those channels has really plummeted over the last five years. I have to assume that either people just got sick of their schtick or the children who appreciated it aged out of their humor and moved on.

Almost forgot to mention this channel is how I found Bowl of Lentil's video about the Early History of Falcom, which is fantastic. Definitely essential viewing for any fans of early JRPGs etc.

It is kind of concerning how much of AAA gaming is so entirely beholden to trends, and how so many games are coalescing into a generic "semi-nonlinear action-adventure with crafting and RPG elements" mold. Makes me want to take a sledgehammer to every gaming PC. But gaming has always been ruthlessly subject to trends due to development costs and barriers of entry. In the indie sphere (the really indie, itch.io sphere) you can find a lot of off-kilter stuff, but it's almost always narrative- rather than mechanics-centric. The mid-market indies seem entirely unconfident in their ability to sell on their own merits instead of marketing themselves as "spiritual successors" to whatever.

Anyway, some other gaming channels I like:

Daisuke Kunimitsu: Commentary-free playthroughs of many obscure PC-series games. Invaluable if you're stuck on something.

Erem: French guy talks about video games. Helps me practice my French but I also enjoy his analysis. CCs in English.

CatPat: This guy dickrides The Electric Underground a bit too much but his CAVE videos are alright. I think he goes here...

Amelie Doree: Deep dives into obscure and JP-only VNs and eroge. A bit too "video essay" for me but still cool.

Bexx Reviews: The only channel I know that does long-form reviews of arcade-only light gun games.

Saint: (In)famous for uploading playthroughs of extremely hard-to-find/untranslated JP PC adventures.

MrMixtape: No-frills fighting game mechanics analysis made entertaining. Infrequent uploads.

ThatVideoGamesShow: Honestly I'm always putting on this shit in the background. Not exactly riveting commentary but I have discovered tons of games I was unaware of.

DungeonChill: This guy is like a less-annoying ThorHighHeels which makes him "OK" in my book.

Brand awareness is brutal. It even applies to the bottom-feeders, like how CAVE had to make a million Donpachi games and Nippon Ichi is stuck with Disgaea if they don't want to die. Not caring about things is the default - look at all the things we're not caring about right this second!

One of the clichés about Mario fangames is the second you change the name and sprite to something non-Mario, your entire audience immediately dies. The entire entertainment biz is throwing shit at the wall; the TV networks getting an audience and so much political power solely by virtue of being one of four channels is really profoundly unfair when you think about it.

When we're currently at the point where the most expensive game ever made by man is a $0 download, you have to be out of your mind to want to compete seriously.

Yeah, brand awareness even affects mid-market indies. I've lost count of the number of times an upcoming indie game has explictly advertised itself as a successor to [well-received game released 15-25 years ago] despite having no actual relation. It would be one thing if it were just a marketing strategy, but you can see how it limits creativity re: visual design and mechanics.

It was just generalized enough that it didn't feel too traumatizing in our current situation. I think my favorite footage was the newish clip of Rosanne Bar going off about baby eaters. She really got so fucking crazy; don't even know.

Honestly, video esssays on YT are the only way I can consume news media anymore without getting too anxious.

I also watched a great recent video by Angela Collier called "why functioning governments fund scientific research."

None of it is particularly good news mind you, but I need to engage with what's going on at some level, and this is the most comfortable for me.
