Shmup goals 2025 – No Shortcut to Success

Image

This time it’s serious!

Here are the links to the previous topics. Have you reached your goals? Failed hard? Tell us!

2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018,
2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024

You know the drill by now, kid!

(1) Personal Favourite Achievements of 2024: As the name suggests, post the stuff you're the most proud of here, whether you're an Easy mode survival player or a Lunatic scorerunner. Anything that stands out to you is what you want here, no matter how silly it may be!

(2) Personal Biggest Screw-ups of 2024: Did a Power-up carrier pick you off or ram into you and ruin the GOD RUN? Whatever comedies/tragedies pop up most clearly to mind go here! These don't have to be specific occurrences but can be generalities as well in your gaming endeavors.

(3) Favourite Achievements by Others of 2024: Whether it's a long-time goal achieved by a close friend or a new WR set in one of your favourite games (or both at the same time!), you can post whatever stuff you enjoyed seeing other people do this year here!

(4) Goals for 2025: What do you have your eyes set on achieving next year? List all the clears, scores, and crazy challenges you want to achieve next year here. Be ambitious!

(BONUS) CHALLENGES TO OTHER PLAYERS: The fun one. Throw down the gauntlet and challenge someone else to something! This might be to beat one of your scores, or a race to a certain clear, or whatever you like. Remember to keep it a little friendly, but on the other hand, go totally nuts!

Alternatively, if you want to be lazy then just post your goals for the year as usual.

Your mission starts now. Are you ready?

(1) Personal Favourite Achievements of 2024:

- Progear no Arashi, 2-ALL. Fantastic game. Great scoring system and boss patterns, nice visuals, easily goes into my top 3 list of favourite shoot 'em ups. My second hardest clear because second loop (which is already much harder) introduces checkpoints so it's not free even if you can do a perfect first loop. Very satisfying to do it

- Dangun Feveron, 11.29 mil clear. Always wanted to do a clear with nice score and decided to go with this groovy game. My goal was "just" a no miss with full chain to reach 10 mil. I scored 9.9 mil because of broken chain on stage 5 (I guess I stopped to be nervous when that happened). After a small break I decided to improve my scoring routes and skipped 10 mil. And this is another game in my current top 3 list, it's very enjoyable

- Various games in category "always wanted to do a clear" like Gradius V first loop clear with Type 1, Soukyugurental ALL clear, Muchi Muchi Pork first loop clear and Giga Wing ALL clear

- Brave Blade, 62 mil clear. One of La Calice Cup clears but it's a bit special because I decided to improve one single game (while already having an ALL clear) instead of submit average scores for all 10 games. It was a really intense race between me and Zerst with constant score improvements from both of us. And this game was not really popular so I had to develop some strats suitable for my style of gameplay (for example usable not only with high power level). Thanks for La Calice Cup we have a four new 60+ mil scores which is really cool (Zerst got 60 mil, grandtimewizard got 61 mil and M.Knight actually surpassed DMC's 64 mil clear by getting 66 mil!)

(2) Personal Biggest Screw-ups of 2024:

- Well, getting 9.9 mil in Dangun Feveron was a screw-up but without that mistake my score would be low 10 mil and it would be probably my final score. 11 mil looked scary for me but with all small improvements it's actually happened

(3) Favourite Achievements by Others of 2024:

- Clears by Wes. A very inspiring player. Progear no Arashi 2-ALL 122 mil, Muchi Muchi Pork v1.01 2-ALL, Battle Traverse Extreme Mode, Mushihimesama ver. 1.5 Ultra Max ALL clear, Devil Blade Reboot Inferno Mode 25.2 mil clear and even Ketsui Ura 2-ALL clear! How is that possible in one single year?

- Clears by PEG. Already very solid collection of clears was expanded with Dodonpachi Daioujou White Label 2-ALL 737 mil clear with non-usual B-L ship and several Dangun Feveron clears (Uotaro 13.9 mil, B-Roll 11.5 mil, Fever SOS 9.6 mil)

- Strikers 1999 2-ALL with F-117 Stealth by Plasmo. A brutal clear with much harder to use ship. Was very fun to follow progress and seeing how unforgivable is this game (both patterns and punishment for mistake)

- Donpachi 2-ALL 56.4 mil clear with Type-B by Juju Kenobi. Insane score. Successful magnum and 2-2 capacity bonus. Just wow

- Dodonpachi Saidaioujou Inbachi-ALL clear by Sairyou. Hardest Cave boss was defeated, finally

- La Calice Cups by Dent4F are still very cool, great job!

(4) Goals for 2025:

- Something Ketsui, maybe Mushihimesama Ultra

- Introduce Dangun Feveron to wider audiences (already planned to show this game on certain marathon)

(1) Personal Favourite Achievements of 2024:
-Battle Garegga all characters 1CC
-Gradius III Arcade Clear
-NebulasRay ALL + Challenging Area Nomiss
-R-Type series Nomisses (RT1 2-ALL, Delta Bydo mode with R9, RT2 2-ALL), also got RT1 and RT2 back to back clear recorded live on RGLtv
-Zeroranger Green Orange TLB 1cc
-Revived my Steam account and bought indie shmups I like to support developers

(2) Personal Biggest Screw-ups of 2024:
-Nothing as far as I'm concerned, everything went according to plan

(3) Favourite Achievements by Others of 2024:
-Players who push Dangun Feveron to its limits (omkol, peg, bamd, qlex, noloom, etc)
-Couple of Ketsui Ura clears by Werner, Wes, and miclus1 with panzer
-ec2151's Sonic Wings 3 world record, insane dedication of slot machine runs
-SDOJ expert mode clears by softdrink and sairyou, the latter cleared with inbachi too
-formless/snub's RayForce 5mil nomiss, really interested to seriously play the game in the near future!
-"Shmup plaza" discord server made by Synthricardo feels like a 'dark side' companion to other shmup servers, it's funny
-DMC's shmup memes will never not be funny
-and many others, the one I wrote above were the most memorable one imo

(4) Goals for 2025:
-Have fun with shmup and other games, also RL hobbies too

1) Personal Favourite Achievements of 2024:

- DoDonPachi II: Bee Storm, 4.9 bil clear. I had to learn some of the low power scoring routes, which was really interesting. Didn't quite hit my 5 bil goal before Calice started, but I was satisfied. I will always have a soft spot for this game as the shmup that got me into going for high scores in the genre.

- Strikers 1945, 1-ALL. My first Psykio clear. When I started playing shmups in 2023, Psykio games were squarely in my "impossible gaming" category. Calice made me sit down and really try to learn Strikers. I've developed a real respect for Psykio's ability to craft a bullet pattern with a clear solution, but is deceptive enough to get me to run my face into the same bullet, in the same spot repeatedly.

- Esp Ra. De., Shit Clear. Another game I wouldn't have played anytime soon without Calice. One of the first bullet hell games I played, and I got filtered by stage 4. Coming back to this I made it to stage 5 on my first credit, and it was cool seeing my skills from other games transfer. I accidentally cleared this while going for a practice run and realizing "Shit, I might be able to just bomb spam the rest of the game...", and that's exactly what I did. Fuck you and the head you rode in on Garra!

(2) Personal Biggest Screw-ups of 2024:

- DoDonPachi II: Bee Storm, not quite hitting 5 bil. Everyone loves nice round numbers.

- Esp Ra. De., not recording it. I've recorded almost every one of my clears since I started playing. I'm going to have to go back and do it again.

(3) Favourite Achievements by Others of 2024:

- Omkol and PEG pushing Dangun Feveron. Impossible gaming. Watching high level play of this game always astonishes me. Watching Omkol learn it made it seem slightly less impossible.

- The entire month of October. The Brave Blade shootout, and new community records in Gemini Wing, Rtype Leo(JP) all coming out of Calice. Third_Strike's huge Espgaluda run, EmperorIng's LmaoLmao grind, and DMC's Soukyugurentai PB. A lot of variety and huge scores.

(4) Goals for 2025:

- VASARA 2, 2-ALL. There's not really a good recording for a scoring 2-ALL of this game. I'm hoping to make one.

- Create and maintain a backlog of shmups I want to play.

(2) Personal Biggest Screw-ups of 2024:

3) Favourite Achievements by Others of 2024:
Thing that's stuck in my brain the most is Rurorulu completing his clean sweep of all 70 (seventy!) Phantasmagoria of Flower View categories after starting ~3.5 years back. Including reaching the first ever 10-digit scores, which involved dragging the final fight out for 30+ minutes while constantly managing chaos.

(4) Goals for 2025:
Plans to revisit the same games again and play better remain unexhausted.

(1) Personal Favourite Achievements of 2024:
  • 10.50 billion points in Touhou FDF2 Extra Mode w/ Reimu (Original goal was 10 billion) - This is possibly the luckiest run I've had in my life! My original goal was only 10 billion which was hard enough, but I happened to get a run with my the best pace ever entering Yukari, and then somehow managed to close the run out without any major mistakes. I was feeling a bit discouraged after failing so many runs over and over, so to this day I'm still really happy I managed to pull this one off. I think grinding this game so much really helped me pay more attention to how I route games and look out for details that can help improve my scores and survivability.
  • 10.76 billion points in Touhou FDF2 Phantasm Mode w/ Youmu - I wasn't planning on playing Phantasm originally, but after getting my Extra score I decided to see what I can do in this mode. After practicing a bit and figuring out some routing I managed to pull this off! This is still the overall WR for this mode between both PC and EXA (I think - it's always a little hard to know for sure for these fangames), while my Extra score is still a character WR record for Reimu.
  • 80 quadrillion points in Giga Wing 2 (Original goal was 70 quadrillion) - I ended up getting a lot farther in this game than I thought I would. I originally aimed a little low because I've always had a problem understanding the intracacies with this game, but thanks to new videos from Koizumi and SPE plus some encouragement from EC2151, I managed to push to 80q! I'm happy with this score, though part of me still wants to try and push a little farther, or work on some other characters like Ralugo.

(2) Personal Biggest Screw-ups of 2024:
I failed one of the goals I set for myself, which was to improve my Espgaluda II PB (currently 586 million). I have started working on routing out each individual stage, but I'm not as far in my practice as I originally aimed for. That said I'm really happy with my achievements in other games, and I'm seeing big improvements in my single stage PBs (I'm currently working on my stage 4). I'm confident I can PB pretty quickly once I start doing full runs.

(3) Favourite Achievements by Others of 2024:
  • Sairyou beating Inbachi in a full run, both on Xbox 360 and on PCB at A-cho! I honestly wasn't sure if this would ever happen, but Sairyou got crazy consistent at reaching Inbachi and managed to knock out runs both on console and at the arcade. The fact that this made the news is crazy too, haha.
  • EC2151's crazy scores in the Sonic Wings series, including beating the 1998 WR in Sonic Wings 3, plus also getting 75 quadrillion with Limi in Giga Wing 2! EC has a knack for grinding out wacky characters in games, and it's been cool to see all the videos he's been putting out for these shot types which haven't had high-scoring videos before.
  • Gray and Aquas both grinding out Kasumi in Pink Sweets, and both getting 20 million scores without infinite lives! Pink Sweets in the past has been almost all Lace Lace Lace, so seeing the other (much weaker) characters get some love has been really fun to watch, especially when you factor in how scary the game is without infinite lives. Though speaking of Lace, I also have to mention Plasmo's new Lace non-infinite-lives WR as well!
  • Koizumi getting a new Carmine Plus WR of 88.6 quadrillion in Giga Wing 2! Koizumi's videos have been a huge help in me learning the game, and he's been grinding the game a ton since last year so I'm really happy that he managed to break ISO's previous WR from 2002. Unfortunately there's no video for this one, though his highest recorded score is still crazy close and shows the route necessary.
  • I'm probably forgetting something too; a lot of crazy stuff happened last year.

(4) Goals for 2025:
I'm going to keep it simple and stick with 2 goals for 2025:
  • 800 million points in Espgaluda II. This might be a bit too ambitious, especially since I have less free time now compared to last year, but I think this is a goal that's still possible for me. My current sum-of-best is about 590 million points before the end-of-game bonus, and I haven't even routed stages 5 and 6 yet. Plus there's improvements I can make in stage 3. I think after doing more stage practice, if I get a run with few deaths (resulting in a big end-of-game bonus), then I can break 800 million.
  • Do a run at a live event. I had a lot of fun attending Fightcade Offline and Galloping Ghost last year, plus watching various other streamed events, so I think it'd be fun to actually try and do a run at some event this year. This will be my first time playing a game in a marathon setting, so I'll need to figure out a strategy for how to play. I usually just grind out low-consistency patterns at home until I happen to get the run I'm looking for, but that obviously won't work in a marathon. But at the same time I think it'd be boring to just do something that's really easy for me, so I'll need to find a middle ground of a run that's feasible but still tense to perform.
Aside from that I'll probably still play other games on the side, including Blue Revolver Double Action and hopefully Touhou FDF3 if it comes out. I also have a large backlog of clears I'd like to whittle through. But in terms of main goals I think these two will keep me plenty busy!

(BONUS) CHALLENGES TO OTHER PLAYERS:
Have fun while improving at the same time!

I) Hard to pick one of these two: R-Type Final III no miss on R-Typer III because it was my biggest achievement in a long time or Gradius 1cc because it was my first arcade game 1cc.

II) Getting distracted by power ups and dying a million times in Hishouzame and Kyuukyoku Tiger (the latter especially)

III) /

IV) Give Gradius II another shot :/

(1) Getting my first proper big boy 1cc with Darius Gaiden.
I mean, it was still pretty scuffed and I had autofire on the whole time, but this was the first time I'd sat the fuck down and kept at a shmup until I got that clear; and the feeling of knowing the game infinitely better than when I'd started was... visceral.
As was the knowledge that I still had a long way to go to actually master it.
And none of it would've been possible without all the truly wonderful folks in the strategy section here - love y'all.

(2) Carrying absolutely none of the momentum from the above into any other title :c
Getting beat down by DOJ's babby mode and, to a lesser extent, Hishouzame and F/A.
What felt like a lot of practice for me, with still no clear to show, felt rotten; and I stuck with all three until I got burned out, instead of stepping away and coming back later.

(3) Ing's 5.61 million in Sonic Wangs 3 with MaoMao.
I've got a complicated relationship with the SW series, and this kind of stylish evisceration is fantastic motivation to focus my scrub self on clears.

(4) I don't want to be dumb and say, "all the above things that annoyed me throughout 2024", because that'd be directionless.
So I'll try to focus it into a more concrete list, roughly according to my perception of their difficulty (any input there is welcome, folks).
Some of these most regulars could do in their sleep, but at they are all things that I enjoy and feel miffed about not having crossed off:

- Cotton RnR (enamoured with all the different modes and ways in which they transformed the game, my hamster brain didn't go back and trip over the expected 1CC)
- GG Aleste 2 (had the most fun with this back a little after the M2 release, but still didn't clear it)
- Sonic Wings 1 and 3 (old grudges)
- Hazelnut Hex (a little too danmaku-y for my liking, but it's still approachable and I enjoyed it way more than I thought I ever would)
- Hishouzame (was getting to stage 4 reliably before fatigue set in and I slacked off on practice - but I still count this one as the least frustrating to attempt over and over again, soundtrack playing a big part in that)
- DOJ babby-mode (fucking humiliating not being able to clear something with Novice on the tin, but I keep tripping over myself and I want this one done with. And yeah, I'm ranking it above Hishouzame because I have more confidence in that one...)
- F/A (even with solid practice I was still only just nudging into stage 4, and so a proper 1cc in this marathon feels like it's a million years off; but this one was my introduction to the Arcade Archives series so I've got a bit of a soft spot for it).

(BONUS): to the entire s11 community - write more guides in general.
Some of us casual dipshits find them decades later and it motivates us just right :3

(1) Personal Favourite Procrastination Achievements of 2024:
I improved my Soukyugurentai pb by a small margin by improving on stage 5 and 6.
I also became a member of the Psikyo 2-ALL club.

(2) Personal Biggest Screw-ups of 2024:
I got banned on stg rev on discord. But being a member of the Psikyo 2-ALL club has its perks = unbanned the same day. 8)

3) Favourite Achievements by Others of 2024:

EmperorIng also became a member of the Psikyo 2-ALL club, which is quite impressive considering he wasn't even playing a Psikyo game.
M.Knight spreading the gospel of Brave Blade during Calice was wholesome to see, even some live streams (Omkol too ofc!). Well deserved community record too.

(4) Goals for 2025:
Learn stage 3 of Soukyugurentai, and improve the pb accordingly.
Test the waters of Grimlen in Dimahoo. Worth a swap from Miyamoto?
Some more casual gaming with Gunbird 2 and Thunder Force V. Brave blade comeback?
Might try the two other helis in Zero Gunner 2, although I really enjoyed the Hokum. Incredible controls in that game.

(BONUS) CHALLENGES TO OTHER PLAYERS:
Spend some more time on twitch and hang out with the rest of us. You can easily find the relatively few streamers by using the STG Shmups tag. It's not as a good as a real arcade center, but arguably the closest thing. https://www.twitch.tv/search?term=STG%20Shmups

2024 was a busy year for me. Some highlights:

I had 45 new 1CC's for 2024.

I settled a long time grudge with Hyper Duel and Kamui, two games I really like and wanted to clear for years but could never quite get over the hump.

I hit my 200th shmup 1CC!

I released my own shmup, Elemental Exogear in June.

I discovered some new favorites: Raiga: Strato Fighter, Mecha Ritz, Graze Counter (Original, not a fan of the GM version), and Pocky & Rocky. These games all captured my imagination in some ways and reminded me why I love this genre.

I went back and 1CC'd two old homebrew games I remembered trying out many years ago, Graslay and G-Type. Both of them are virtually unheard of, but nicely polished and feature multiple routes. Both are free, check them out!
List of 2024 1CC's
[360] Otomedius
[360] Otomedius Gorgeous
[AC] Air Assault (1-ALL)
[AC] Darius (ABDHMRX)

[PC] Touhou 05 (normal)
[PC] WeXeM MeXeM
[PC] Zakesta
[PC] Zakesta-Z
[SFC] Cotton 100%
[SNES] Pocky & Rocky
So what's next? After releasing my own game and hitting 200 1CC's I’ve really slowed down on playing shmups. Kinda feels like I've accomplished the things I set out to do and I've lost some of the motivation to play. For the last several months I've only played shmups if they've really jumped out at me. The Touhou Fantastic Dankamu Festival games did just that since I had a chance to play the eXa versions, and it felt special playing Touhou games in an arcade setting. I recently got a PS5 so now I can play R-Type Final 3 Evolved, that one is going to be a must clear. Otherwise, I really don't see myself racking up many clears in 2025. Maybe this is finally the year I sink some serious time into Strikers 1945?

(1) Personal Favourite Achievements of 2024:

Back in May, I got my best ever overall placement in an arcade shmup competition, with a 7th place finish in Calice 8. My best performance in any particular game was my War of Aero 2-ALL, getting a community record and 1st place in the tournament for that game (my first game win!) Two other games I performed particularly well in were Giga Wing (51.6t) and Muchi Muchi Pork (111m), which showed that I could get at least somewhat competent at scoring a game fairly quickly if I put enough effort into learning the routes. I feel like this tournament in general is where I met my full potential in a competitive setting for the first time.

(2) Personal Biggest Screw-ups of 2024:

Completely ignoring my 2024 goals from the last thread (again...)

(3) Favourite Achievements by Others of 2024:

There is one achievement that happened this year that I feel stands out above all the rest, and I'm sure we all know what it is:
Sairyou's SDOJ Inbachi clear.
A clear long thought impossible... but it has now actually been done!

But of course, there are other achievements worth mentioning as well:
  • ec's Sonic Wings 3 WR
  • Oscar's LoLK Lunatic WRs and getting it for each shot type at some point (I'm not sure if he had all at once but he has 3/4 right now)
  • DMC's Zero Gunner 2 2-ALL
  • Juju Kenobi's progress on DonPachi
  • OmKol getting 11m in Dangun Feveron, and doing it really quickly too
  • Plasmo's Strikers 1999 2-ALL with F-117
  • Probably a lot more I missed
(4) Goals for 2025:
I've recently been learning Dragon Blaze routes, I have no idea how far I'll go with that but I'll just make something in that my goal.

(1) Personal Favourite Achievements of 2024: I was going to say that I accomplished absolutely nothing last year, with no new clears and no new high scores for anything that I'd cleared before, but then I remembered that I got 3.something million points on Hishouzame with no autofire very early in the year. That wins by default.

(2) Personal Biggest Screw-ups of 2024: This happened

Image

(3) Favourite Achievements by Others of 2024: Sairyou's Inbachi-ALLs

(4) Goals for 2025: basically finish the unfinished stuff that I was supposed to do last year, which includes the following:
Same! Same! Same! 1P 1-ALL and get a higher score than Jaimers
DDP Daifukkatsu 1-ALL
Batsugun ALL
Tatsujin 1-ALL
improve high score in Out Zone (maybe counterstop?)
improve high score in Slap Fight (maybe counterstop?)
improve high score in Hishouzame (low priority, but would be nice)
buy Tatsujin Ou PCB and start working on 1-ALL after Same! Same! Same! 1P 1-ALL

I was thinking about streaming some Toaplan games, but then I realized that nobody would care because of time zones and because it's Toaplan and not literally anything else. I also have no idea how to do this with PCBs.

(BONUS) CHALLENGES TO OTHER PLAYERS: Play Same! Same! Same! 1P! It's super fun, I promise!

Working on it for Kyuukyoku Tiger, very, very slowly. I started it on 9 May 2023 and it is about 20% finished. It will be finished at an undetermined point. No promises, but sadly nobody cares about this game besides me, the guys that made it, and a handful of other people, so it's very low priority. Planning to also do one for Horror Story, but that won't be done until after Kyuukyoku Tiger.

(1) Personal Favourite Achievements of 2024:

-Ikaruga AC Normal 35.76m: I was pretty happy to break the 35.5m after so much grinding. Especially because this score beats SaSuisai 35.71m score, watching his run on YouTube back in the day was the reason I became engaged with shmupping and Ikaruga

-Ch3 AC Normal 8.427m: Another achievement I am very proud of, a lot of study went into engineering the Bunretsu pattern I used to improve my score. It is very tricky though and I decided to use it only for single stage score eventually

-Meeting fellow italian players XER and powerfuran in RL and having an awesome weekend playing Ikaruga and discussing Ikaruga. A real blast and a real highlight of the year!

(2) Personal Biggest Screw-ups of 2024:

-I missed a 36m score a pair of times, in particular I remember a run during a live stream in December when I entered Tageri3rd on 36.1 pace. Then I trainwrecked the run

-I promised a written round up of the Bunretsu to a friend but due to a combination of RL issues and flat out laziness on my part I was not able to deliver. I hope to eventually complete it soon

3) Favourite Achievements by Others of 2024:

-mamacchi 36.64m WR and ricken 36.31m for AC Normal. Probably my favourite STG achievements ever

-Saoryu SDOJ Inbachi clear

-Wes tour de force, incredible year by an incredible player

-EC2151 Sonic Wings 3 WR

-Plasmo Striker 3 F-117 2-all + finally getting his DonPachi WR on YT with super detailed annotations

-Juju DonPachi 56.4m 2-all

-Omkol Dangun Feveron 11.29m

-CPS R-type clears. I love early R-Types action

PS: I am surely missing some other awesome STG achievement by other players

(4) Goals for 2025:

-same as 2024: get a 36m score for Ikaruga AC Normal

(1) Personal Favourite Achievements of 2024:
Pretty happy with how the entire calendar year went honestly. I can't imagine I'd ever have another year like this again in my life:
- Progear 2-all 122m PB clear in January
- Muchi Muchi Pork v1.01 2-all in February
- Gradius ReBrith 4-loop clear in March
- Battle Traverse Extreme mode clear in April
- Mushihimesama v1.5 Ultra Max clear in June
- Ketsui Omote 2-all & Ikaruga Dot Eater/Pacifist clears in September
- Ketsui Ura 2-all clear to close out the year in December

(2) Personal Biggest Screw-ups of 2024:

Nothing too bad that I didn’t recover from haha. Had a hilariously pathetic choke on doom while going for the Ketsui Ura 2-all but I was able to shrug it off and get the clear later that same day.

(3) Favourite Achievements by Others of 2024:

- Omkol’s lightning fast Progear 2-all clear at the beginning of the year.
- CPS’ equally fast no miss 2-all clears of both R-Type I & II
- Scowsh’s strong calendar year of great 1cc’s
- EC2151’s Sonic Wings 3 WR
- Thisrg’s insane Mushi Futari v1.01 Ultra clear
- PEG’s DDP DOJ White Label 2-all clear
- SquidDude’s continued scoring progress in Ketsui

(4) Goals for 2025:
No real goals that I’d be willing to strongly commit to right now although it would be nice to finally 1cc Space Harrier this year.

If you stream on weekends you could find hours where most people can watch.
Counterstop player Boredom is streaming Same x3 right now by the way (https://www.twitch.tv/boredom_79).
Wabbylegs has streamed it too quite regularly during North American hours (https://www.twitch.tv/wabbylegs).
Seems he might be done with this game though (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4hY60Ed2B3U).

The streaming landscape right now is that a few popular streamers get 30+ viewers quite often (like Aquas, Desmaku, Jaimers, Icarus), most others with mic on and who are somewhat active in the community has 10+ regardless of which game they stream or how good they play. If you stream with mic off it is likely to be below 10 unless the gameplay and/or popularity of the game is really high. Infinite looping games might do a little worse though I guess. The thing is that because the number of simultaneous streamers is so few, if you just use the stg shmups tag chances are pretty high you get a few people visiting your stream anyway, chat might become more active once in a while, you get followers, and go from there.

So even though the numbers are really low across the whole scene, if you just want some people to hang out with, play live "in front" of an audience, or maybe interact with a few people really interested in that particular game it can be worthy thing to do.

(1) Personal Favourite Achievements of 2024: I started playing shmups in december, and I'm proud of my 1cc of mushihimesama 1.5 on Original difficulty, with W-Shot (the green one); it unlocked my mind for this genre and now I'm looking for new challenges as a beginner, soon after mushi I got my 1cc at gunvein, crimzon clover, blue revolver and devil blade reboot - all of them on the easy or normal difficulty avaiable of course.

(2) Personal Biggest Screw-ups of 2024: I died at the last boss of mushi 1.5 on novice when he had almost no health, it was like a rite of passage, hah

(3) Favourite Achievements by Others of 2024: As I'm new I don't follow the scene much, can't comment on this.

(4) Goals for 2025: I wanna 1 credit clear at least 9 different shmups on normal/arcade difficulty. I'm setting myself the goal to beat the following:
Devil Blade Reboot on Hard
Mushihimesama 1.5 on Maniac
Blue Revolver: Double Action on Hyper
Gunvein on Intense
Crimzon Clover on Arcade
ZeroRanger on Green Orange
Radiant Silvergun on Normal
Ikaruga on Normal
Hellsinker.

Let's GO!
Practicing the flow state with arcade style games and meditating with high intensity gameplay.

FWIW I don't tune into a lot of streams live, but I still like going back and watching VODs. Plus for my own play, I find it fun and helpful to go back and rewatch my play even if no one else watches or cares. And while I don't stream a lot of my practice sessions, I'll still record them to review later. For those moments where something unexpected happens or "I swear to god I didn't get hit", it's nice to be able to go back and see where I messed up.

Of course streaming from PCB has it's own complications so you may decide it's not worth the trouble. But there's a lot more benefits to streaming/recording besides just clout chasing (though I enjoy doing that too if I'm being honest).

Get back into Under Defeat. It has been a few years old friend..
You're sure to be in a fine haze about now, but don't think too hard about all of this. Just go out and kill a few beasts. It's for your own good. You know, it's just what hunters do! You'll get used to it.

(1) Personal Favourite Achievements of 2024:
- Showcasing a DOJBL run for Speedons (a French caritative event) and getting a new PB during the preparation (2.7b with A-ex)
- Learning Mushi Futari BL original scoring and getting a nice 1.8b score
- Learning Donpachi with type B and getting a score of 56m (my main occupation these last 6 months)
- Holding the 6th edition of the Shoot the Baguette event (a French shmup marathon)
- Going to several IRL events and meeting fellow shmuppers

(2) Personal Biggest Screw-ups of 2024:
- Doing a pretty poor run during the big event at Speedons
- Not really digging Futari BL original scoring and not finding the will to push above 2b
- Not really finding the time to play DDP, except for some light derusting before events

(3) Favourite Achievements by Others of 2024:
- Ikaruga Normal new World Record by mamacchi with 36.64m, and MAZ new PB (very close to 36m now)! Following the progress made by a circle of dedicated players upon that game for the last few years has been amazing.
- Sairyou Inbachi clear in SDOJ. Not only beating the boss at the end of a full run, but showing insane levels of consistency on the whole game.
- Plasmo and Aquas progress on Pink Sweet. Also Plasmo recent interest in Strikers 1999, using an underused ship.
- Meriscan Blazing Star scores and his "end of the year present", with a fantastic Strikers 1999 run.
- RZM progress on DDP.
- Omkol Progear 2-all and his recent 11m+ clear of Dangun Feveron.
- PEG DOJWL 2-all and his recent work on Dangun Feveron as well, clearing the Fever SOS version, TLB included.
- Wes fantastic year, especially on Ketsui and Progear.
- CRI recent PB in DFK.
- Thisrg’s clear of Futari Ultra 1.01.
- Miclus, Werner and Squiddude work on Ketsui.

(4) Goals for 2025:
This time, it's gonna be simple:
- Play Donpachi as much as possible
- Maybe some light derusting on DDP and Ikaruga for events

CHALLENGES TO OTHER PLAYERS:
A shmup session a day keep the bullets away

I'll think about it. Biggest problem, aside from not being sure how to actually do this with PCBs, is that I have work all day on Saturdays and then on Sundays I usually just want to relax and typically spend literally about half the day sleeping, so I actually do most of my shooting on weekdays.

I'd pretty much limit it to non-Batsugun Toaplan, though, as I still want to encourage more people to play these games and get more information about these games out there, which are my primary goals, but also because those are pretty much the only things I can actually play properly. I do have a Batsugun PCB now, but it's borrowed, so I'll eventually have to return it.

I do already have an arrangement to stream Zero Wing at Mikado, but it's not scheduled yet because I'm going to do it to promote the release of the Toaplan documentary, which doesn't have a release date yet. Zero Wing wasn't really even my choice, though; the owner didn't have a Zero Wing PCB when we decided to do it, so we thought it would be cool to do something that he didn't have. The only ones he didn't have were Zero Wing, which I do have, and FixEight, which I do not have. He does now have both, though, so I'm probably going to do something other than Zero Wing.

Yeah, it's going to be a pain to do it with PCB. I really really really would prefer to do it with PCB instead of emulation, though, even though emulation would be way easier. As good as M2 ShotTriggers is, it's still just an emulator and I really would prefer to do it with the real thing instead if I can.

(1) Personal Favourite Achievements of 2024:
Had no much time this year but I did with I can
- 65Mi in EspGaluda, it was an old dream to play this game again.
- V-V Bomber All Clear, believe me, this game is hard.
- 2.3Mi in Eco Fighters, but a dream come true.

(2) Personal Biggest Screw-ups of 2024:
- V-V Bomber I had very little time to play this game at the beginning of the year and I couldn't do everything I wanted inthis game. I needd return to it in future.

(3) Favourite Achievements by Others of 2024:
- EmperorIng's Sonic Wings
- DMC's Souky
- Knight's Brave Brave Blade

(4) Goals for 2025:

- 2025 will really be similar to 2024, with little time to play, but I hope to improve my playing style, I tend to be too defensive. I have no other goal than to improve and discover new things about playtechniques.
- Here I need to paraphrase the great Campeão Goiano: ...estou no monte em treinamento terrível... ...quando eu descer desse monte...

(1) Personal Favourite Achievements of 2024:

-Psyvariar 2 - Kei 81mil. Quite early in the year and already a pretty strong score. You could say 2023's failure was a 2024 success.
-Chaos Field - Ifumi 416mil. I knew it was possible to get more than 400mil and I just had to get to it and pull it off. Mission accomplished.
-Brave Blade - 66mil. This is both a Calice top score and a Community record. I knew I would use that Calice opportunity to focus on this very cool game and finally clear it, but I didn't know I would also dethrone the DMC score in the process. Awesome stuff!
-Dr Toppel's Adventure - 1mil. Speaking of Calice games where I somehow got #1 rank (not that many people other than me really wanted that Toppel first rank though hahaha), the million points threshold was an objective I was hoping to nail during the tourney but couldn't. It's fine though, as I was able to get it later.
-I got back into Sanvein scoring, and got myself some 110k+ scores on the remaining routes. It wasn't suuuuper arduous but lots of fun. What a cool game.
-Last but not least, I was able to release a score attack demo for my game
It's been years since the last one and lots of stuff has been added to this demo, making it much closer to how the final game should play like. It was also great seeing people in the Shmup Junkies discord score it as part of a competition we did on the two caravan stages. Zaaarock's runs especially were top notch!

(2) Personal Biggest Screw-ups of 2024:

-Illvelo 8.9bil. I didn't get the 9bil I was aiming for, but ended up veeeeeery close.
-Psyvariar 2's last Yuhei mission still eludes me. I cleared all the other ones rather quickly but that final one is a big undertaking, pushing you to almost play on a superplayer level. I'm closer and closer to it, but haven't nailed it yet. I also haven't beaten the TLB with him yet, pushing to score it as much as possible instead of settling first for a simple clear.

(3) Favourite Achievements by Others of 2024:

-Kazact's 4.9bil DDP2 community record. To my knowledge he's the first one in the community to seriously push the game and play with the low power strats for high scores. What a cool effort!
-Marus breaking 80 quad on Giga Wing 2, the result of a collaborative effort with runs/videos from other players too. Despite being solo games, it's interesting seeing the power of the collective too.
-EmperorIng's Sonic Wings 3 MaoMao WR which definitely came as a surprise to me, especially so close after his first 2-ALL of the game!
-What a year it was for Dangun Feveron. So many TLB clears and groovy score PBs. Noloom, morsalty, PEG, OmKol, and Bamd all went wild on the game. Disco is definitely not dead.
-Kayar recording a new 6.076 tril SDOJ score PB, just a few days before the Inbachi clear from Sairyou kinda overshadowed it. It was a crazy week for that game haha.
-LAZO managing to get a 200+mil Fine score in Cotton RnR. I wasn't able to nail that threshold with this character so it's encouraging to see a fellow fan of the game pulling it off!
-Showa Yojyo's 9.9bil Illvelo score. He was sooooo close to 10bil, but had to stop due to the game no longer being in his arcade.
So frustrating to see that journey stop like this, but it's also great that he managed to get this far.
-I was not the only Brave Blade enthusiast during during Calice : the competition was quite fierce between Zerst, OmKol, and GrandTimeWizard who all ended up having 60+mil high scores. Well played, brave warriors! Your legend will be retold forever and ever.
-Mojilove getting a 14.7mil Radirgy DGJL run. Definitely inspiring as I need to get off my ass and at least get a 10mil+ score of my own hehe.

(4) Goals for 2025:

Reviewing last year's goals :
[+] Keep playing and having fun => As always 8)
[+] Getting even more into Psyvariar games => I definitely kept playing Psy2
[+] Chaos Field - Ifumi 400mil. It's time to do it. I have had strats that allow it for almost a year now, it's just a matter of actually playing the game. => Nailed that score!
-Keep playing and having fun
-More Brave Blade character clears / 60 mil scores
-Illvelo - 9bil
-Psyvariar 2 - Yuhei mission 20 clear and community record
-Mess more with Chaos Field's arcade version

(1) Personal Favourite Achievements of 2024:

- Gun Frontier 881k. I originally played for a low rank clear & then incorporated some additional strategies for some extra score.
- Cho Ren Sha 21 million - Played for a server tourney expecting to get 20 million, but was able to push it slightly higher.
- JSS Special 143 million & Hard mode clear - Special mode is a short boss rush, but has a lot of modified attacks & some new bosses that make this significantly harder than normal mode, especially E3 which was always nerve-racking. Getting a run that gave me 6 lives in reserve was extremely satisifying,
On the other hand, Hard mode with the default ship is even more of a nightmare, since the last 1/3 of the game has so many chokepoints. I was both relieved & disappointed on my clear, since I beat it but got a terrible end bonus, which give me a clear score of 67.8 million.
- Aurail 8.1 million- Even if this game got massively ignored during Calice; it was pretty satisfying to figure out most of the missing score from my previous runs in 2019 from the 3d stages & hard routes which can net a couple of extra extends & increased my PB from 6.6 mil to 8.1.

(2) Personal Biggest Screw-ups of 2024:
- A few games where I got very close to the ALL (Brave Blade, Muchi Muchi Pork, probably a couple others I'm forgetting) but didn't clear.
- Lot of JSS Hard chokes over an almost 3 month period- part of it was out of stubbornness but also just wanting to push myself harder & get good.

(3) Favourite Achievements by Others of 2024:

- Wabby making those big gains on Same3!- dude put in a lot of work & dedication into improving his score even after his initial clear & got 3.8 million. Looking forward to seeing if he can grab the 2-all next year!

- EC's 19 million on RayCrisis with the WR-02R. The other insane slot machine clear; it was really impressive to see him piece together a ton of score strats when the game not only has dynamic rank (enroachment) that affects enemies & bullet speed, but he also has to contend with fincky scoring values from the special attack score bomb & sometimes glitchy lock-ons disappearing. Nevertheless, he pushed the community record for WR-O2 pretty far, but recorded a replay in really good quality, which is something this ship does not have vs WR01/WR03.

-CPS's insanely fast R-Type I/II clears & giving other irem aficionados a run for their money

-A ton of really amazing clears from Wes (Ketsui) , OmKol & PEG (Dangun Feveron) , & Miculus (Strikers I & II)

(4) Goals for 2025:

- Not entirely sure yet, but some possibilities including some additional challenges in the Raiden series, Raizing entries, improve my CRS Hard PB, etc.

(BONUS) CHALLENGES TO OTHER PLAYERS:

Please forgive this self-indulgent wall of text! I didn't write anything last year so I am all pent up  And thanks to all the folks like Daytime, wes, zps, maximo et al. for the kind praise.

(1) Personal Favorite Achievements of 2024:
My achievements this year, quantitatively, are smaller than years previous but hopefully I made up for them qualitatively. Less scores, bigger milestones!

-Sonic Wings 1 - MaoMao 2ALL
January began the year of MaoMao! I carried over my 2023 goal of 2all'ing the game and got it right at the start of the year. This was quite a difficult grind as I came to grips with something that is becoming a common feature in my shmup journey: lack of replays (none existed for MaoMao, so I had to be the first!), weak character (her damage if you lose full power is nonexistent), and a rather difficult and sometimes buggy/trollish game (Video System staple!). Coming so early in the year portended great things, perhaps?

-Giga Wing 2 - Limi - 75 Quadrillion
The game I keep on coming back to. Not too long ago, my overriding goal was to break 70 quadrillion, but it soon became clear that I could reach even higher than that. Friendly competition with marus - as well as collaborating on strategy via twitch and discord - pushed both of us to discover new secrets and techniques that put us on the path of the superplayer. A lot of people kept on asking me why I didn't just switch to the standard, popular ship everyone else used (Carmine Plus) to get better scores. Well, I kind of hate following the crowd when it comes to stuff like this. Maybe it's ego, or big-fish-in-a-small-pond mindset, but it is far more rewarding to go my own way. This would be a recurring theme throughout the year.

-RayCrisis WR02 - 19 million
I've long loved this game's aesthetics, music, and style, and it was one of the early shmups I really was drawn to. While it took me a while to 1cc (not until the Ray'z was released - thank you for finally having savestates), it wasn't until I had cleared RayStorm (in 2023) that I had it in my mind to try for a good score in this game. I had the lofty, selfish, and somewhat silly goal of getting the top score in the western community, and set about doing that with the WR02. I think I am officially retired from the game after the journey into the heart of darkness (ie bugs, randomness, bullshit rng). However, it was nonetheless gratifying to finally to get a "high" scoring run and record it too to tempt future generations of malcontents and crazies to attempt to beat. This run is extra special because I realized at the end I wouldn't get my goal unless I risked everything at the final boss, tossing away all my lives for score.

-Radiant Silvergun - st4 route 1cc
I always wanted to clear the harder route, and it took quite a bit of practice, but I did! I messed up the chaining on stage 5 really bad, however. I would like to eventually get a good score on top of the clear. Story Mode clear next??

-Sonic Wings 3 - MaoMao 5.6 million
lol, this is the one that is the most important and maybe even the one I'll be "remembered" for! The year started with MaoMao, and ended with her as well. How poetic can you get?!

This score transitioned from daydream to reality so quickly, I still can't believe it. I only started seriously playing in October! I don't want to humblebrag though. At first I just wanted to repeat my SW1 feat above - get a decent 2all with MaoMao with modest score goals, but as I began to understand the quirks of the game (and played it constantly) I kept setting my sights higher and higher. Of course, the whole process was buoyed by a great collaborative effort of score and strategy sharing by a number of people across discord and twitch, who kindly took interest in my goals and started to help me put together the pieces to get the one lucky run. Ako, toimine, niviv, members of stg rev and La Plaza, and even the infamous synthricardo all had their hand in the achievement as we figured out the best way to break the game apart. That type of collaborative spirit is so rare in the genre so when it happens it is so awesome to see!

(2) Personal Biggest Screw-ups of 2024:
-Not achieving my 80q score goal in Giga Wing 2 when the race with marus was on and the heat was cranked up. I got all the way up to 75q and thought I could close the gap, but I got some serious burnout and started exploring other games - particularly RayCrisis (yikes) and Sonic Wings (yikes!)

-similarly, dangerous levels of burnout with Dimahoo, I grinded too hard and only got to the ninja boss with Grimlen, and not even all that great a score either. For shoving 40+ hours into the game I don't have much to show for it. I still recommend interested players check out baf and Olifante's excellent mame gadgets overlay for the game that they developed; I am hosting it ever since copyright strikes took it down.

-utterly losing my sanity with RayCrisis only to find out that scoring the WR02 in the game is bugged to hell, meaning it was all for nothing HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

3) Favorite Achievements by Others of 2024:
The part I dread writing, I always forget all the great things people pull off over the year.

-marus being the first westie to crack 80 quadrillion in Giga Wing 2. This is beyond the realm of the enthusiast and mere skilled player, he has seen (far off) the throne of God! It was a race between us to see who would get there first and I faltered while he succeeded. I hope to join him soon. Just overall incredible stuff! It's also worth mentioning that I am, like marus, so happy to see a new World Record in Giga Wing 2 by Koizumi. All four of us (me, marus, SPE, Koizumi) have informally encouraged one another and chatted a little bit, and it's great to see this type of globe-crossing strategy talk and theory-crafting.

-When I saw that MKnight had posted a 1cc of Psyvariar 2 I was pretty excited since the game is sadly overlooked (Despite its flaws). However, when I saw his Shooting Type score, easily doubling my own hard-fought 1cc, my eyes literally bulged out of my head! A hearty congratulations for that, and for recording one of the cleanest TLB fights I have yet seen in the game.

-DMC's 35 million in Soukyugurentai. The time, luck, and dedication it takes to get a score this high is simply inspiring. He has already for a few years now been showing how he is one of the best players of the game on this half of the globe, but he's arguably one of the best players by any metric now. Also, his shmup meme videos are pretty damn funny.

-CPS, aka, the Milkman, God-gamer that he is, managed to do a live, back-to-back 2all of R-Type 1 and 2 during the streaming event RetroGameLive not too long ago. As someone who has done several live-event runs, I know how stressful and mistake-prone they can be (I have a 50% success rate with them). So not only to pull off one, but two 2alls back to back is not only seriously good luck but shows how well he mastered the games. GG!

-gunna hop on the wes fanclub. GG big man especially on your back-to-back ura entries with a 2all to cap it off.

-maz and the 35.7+ in Ikaruga. This score is hard to explain for those not in the know. Simply put: He is in the top percentage of Ikaruga players worldwide now! A wide gulf is between here and the next 36 milestone, but if he feels like continuing I am sure he can pull it off. Go for it!

-third_strike coming out of danmaku retirement to showcase ESPGaluda at a Shmup Plaza relay stream, and then pushing past a strong showing (50+ million) to go all the way to 65 million. Very incredible stuff!

-wabbylegs' Same!Same!Same! clear beating -THE- jaimers' score!!!!

-synthricardo's 5cc of the gameboy color port of Rayman!

And many, many many other accomplishments by others. I just like seeing the community play and try for their goals, it's always inspiring.

(4) Goals for 2025:
-80 Quadrillion or more in Giga Wing 2. It's high time I finally put this goal to rest. Maybe a nice high score for Romi (whose world record is scarcely above 80q) as well. I definitely want to beat RIN's old 'tas' Romi score of 72 quadrillion.
-Push the Sonic Wings 3 score for Chaika & Pooshka as far as I can go. Another record???
-1ALL Sonic Wings 2, then maybe think if I have it in me to 2ALL.
-Grimlen 1cc in Dimahoo, and be free of the game once and for all.
-finally fix all my broken scoreboards. Sorry!

(BONUS) CHALLENGES TO OTHER PLAYERS:

-Download baf and Olifante's overlay and try Dimahoo!
-play something besides a Cave game, you just might find out you like it
-Ako, come out of idle-rpg retirement and get an insane score in Sonic Wings 3!
-I encourage you to try participating either in a "live" stream event (e.g. Shmup plaza relay, Shmup Slam, Shoot the Baguette etc.), a competition (Calice Cup), or a meetup. The pressure of a crowd, and of competition can be really invigorating in judicious doses.
Spend some more time on twitch and hang out with the rest of us. You can easily find the relatively few streamers by using the STG Shmups tag. It's not as a good as a real arcade center, but arguably the closest thing. https://www.twitch.tv/search?term=STG%20Shmups
Seconding this!
