It's gonna be a bad knockoff of Blasphemous instead of a Ninja Gaiden game.

Same exact thing happened when Larian took the Baldur's Gate license. You can enjoy BG3 all you want. It's not Baldur's Gate. It's Divinity Original Sin 3 with the a D&D label slapped over top of it.

In that case that's a good thing though. Though an actual Original Sin 3 would have been better.

ah what bland mush that game was. totally inoffensive and unmemorable in both aesthetics and mechanics. the search action element was barely even there

I wish Strider 2 wasn't constantly stopping you to show you something because it would be a really fun game if I could just play seamless.

I think a lot of Blasphemous 1&2 influence on the Ninja Gaiden IP, in the 2d Metroidvania style, is the most welcome thing to the IP, SINCE it left the 2d world.

With SEGA bringing back Shinobi in a gorgeous hand-drawn artstyle, pressure could create diamonds from both.

I tend to check out as soon as "metroidvania" is invoked because that usually translates to nerfed stage design and combat.

Neato combat system of combo > launcher > air juggle > slam > OTG, now watch me damage boost / air dash / i-frame roll past 90% of encounters.

Did Blasphemous have screen locking during encounters? That would give me hope.

After being in a "What do I play rut" on Steam I decided go hang out with some old robot ninja friends on the PS4.
I know the Ninja Saviors are on Steam and I will probably double up at some point, but the PS4 doesn't get much love.

I hadn't played since before my HD shit the bed so I only had the initial three (two - I don't enjoy Kamatachi at all). Criminal. Went with our boy Ninja.

After figuring out the move set and some first/second level rust (almost ate shit on the first boss) I settled in. Smashed the rest of the game pretty good. Gave poor Silverman the worst beating I ever had - he never reached the rafters.

Cruised to the 1CC/Murder Machine. I don't remember if I had Mad Murder Machine before the HD wipe. Oh well.

I got Yaksha back. Time for more killing.
You're sure to be in a fine haze about now, but don't think too hard about all of this. Just go out and kill a few beasts. It's for your own good. You know, it's just what hunters do! You'll get used to it.

No, but for the most part the enemy and stage design are such that you can't really just barrel past enemies/obstacles, at least not if you're in an area that is anywhere near your power level relative to the game's progression. It's not SOTN or Super Metroid where you just speedrun through everything, I'm sure that tech is possible, but you'd have to be pretty focused about it or you'll die handily. Hopefully this new NG is similar.

damn that new Shinobi looks cool. i'm not the biggest fan of the Super series but it's good to see a sequel to an old game that doesn't employ a pandering "pixel art" style. it's just good art and animation

The joys of writing shit down. Image Fired up Crime Fighters 2, and noticed I'd left a savepoint at st4 opening, two years prior. "Jebus! This hobo/doggo mixup is brutal!" I exclaimed. But then! *REMEMBERING THE SCENES* ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) Marking that one for index. It's not sucking your own dick if you didn't know it was you! Image TIME TRAVEL

What a great game. Image One of its genre's finest If you're gonna fight, fight dirty! Chiba-ramas. Image JFC HOW UNFORTUNATE Image

One of a faintly perturbing number I've left steaming on the back burner, on the brink of Nice Replay. I blame that fuckin loop! Even though it's excellent, I just want nice concise 1ALLs these days. I'm glad they came around to that with Mystic Warriors and Metamorphic Force, and IIRC Violent Storm. Loops suck tbh 3;

Happier note, though!

Sunsoft arcade stuff from the late 80s/early 90s, another field I'm quite unfamiliar with. Brings to mind Bay Route (geddit? bwaaa! some funsters at Sunsoft's US branch, I guess), another published by Sega IIRC. Shame that might complicate an ACA release somewhere down the line, I love seeing truly forgotten stuff like this get quality home releases.

tried out Haunted Castle Revisited tonight. its deece. definitely a huge improvement over the original at least lol. wasn't exactly a game begging to be revisited, i can't imagine being like "ahh if only these one or two aspects were better it wouldn't be a total pile of shit" but it's neat that this basically completely new game exists in its name. kind of annoyed it doesn't seem to save scores anywhere. guess i need to just remember to grab a screenshot when game's over if i want it

Coulda had him return as a boss. :o He does Za Warudo and the usual knife bullshit before explaining he's had that watch stuck up his ass for thirty-six years waiting for your return just like Christopher Walken in Pulp Fiction, before eating all the knives square in his fuckin face so neither of you have to remember Haunted Castle ever again. Good to know. Being able to trivialize or ignore combat is the main buzzkill of Search Action for me. Fans of the style will say that robust movement mechanics supplants combat, which is fair enough (and hard to argue with after watching an Aria of Sorrow TIME ATTACK*), but I prefer a better balance along the lines of the Metal Slug games.

* Why say "speedrun" ever? The perfect term already existed.

Circle of the Moon had the excellent Battle Arena, and it would've been more brilliant if similar locked areas were interspersed in the main game.

By the way, there's a metroidvania Metal Slug clone in the works called Guns of Fury. But without screen locking, it can only be a CT Special Forces clone. Someone write an article where screen locking is one of the Laws of Miyamoto so metroidvania devs think it's a genius concept. After all, it was a prominent feature of Zeruda no Densetsu (Nintendo, 1986).

Question: if I mention Capcom’s Dynasty Wars, who would say ‘Yes please, Rando!’? I am also thinking about a bit of Xenomorph-driven rants for Christmas. All in favour, say ‘Aye’. All against, say ‘yes please!’.

Dear God, RIOT is one hell of a trip. :o Don't look up videos, I implore you, just get in there and enjoy. (recently arrived via ACA)

A rock-solid Carnival STG. Stages built for speed, bosses winningly multifarious. Exudes the fine mechanical detail expected of Tecmo. Aesthetic and direction are really sublime; expected a gag, got an epic. Rollicking farce as fierily affectionate as it is uproarious, played Dead Fuckin Straight. Image A riot for discerning 80s action schlockaholics, indeed. Image

Always maintained Tecmo's AC staff are some funny dudes. Image Waited twenty years for this, hoping the rest of the game was as cool as the first stage. It is! Anyone who loves the fever daydream style of Sengoku, its sequel, or Cannon Dancer should jump in.

Pet theory, spoilers, the main character is in fact:

Is that the first Dynasty Wars / Tenchi wo Kurau, with the "line dancing" playfield? Always been curious about that one. Its sequel is always good reading too, though.

Sishio Birru-Sama:

Ah right, there’s like one million games based on the Romance of the Three Kingdoms. But this is Spart…I mean, R2RKMF! Nothing but the purest arcade experience !

It is indeed the one in which you choose one of four horsemen and move along fixed lines/positions. Beautiful visuals, great OST by Ayako Mori (the Mega Man
Lady), and the game mechanics are great once you get past the initial awkwardness.

So we go with this title for Spring Festival and the Xenomorphs for Christmas, aye. Plus or minus some other extras along the road

Riot, I am saving it for the Spring Festival break. The male parent will probably adore it, though I haven’t asked him yet. I expect surreal commentary and mildly hallucinatory questions while I will try it for the first time, indeed

I loved Haunted Castle Revisited.

It's not too hard, but it's appropriately hectic and feels satisfying and good to play. I'm also a huge fan of the boss fights. Stuff like Medusa and Dracula's random high/low mix-up game mixed in with other threats, or Frank's danmaku ceiling debris, just lots of fun twitchy stuff to dodge and react to.

It does make me wish M2 would just do a wholly original title in this vein though, really break out and let loose.

Shameless plug-in: This is my squib on Capcom's Black Tiger. As always, I am avoiding huge posts in the main discussion by introducing my 5+ pages-long squibs via links. I hope that you will enjoy this one: the game is perfect for a cold, Christmas-y night.

Oho! News to me. Some years back I thought about a new 2D Gaiden, and what had to align for it to make it. And I thought it would be wise to not use the very famous mascot for destruction. And it's not a remake?!
I am interested!

Interested to hear it's non-functioning in JP; the option only appears in the North American version of the game, on ACA. Hi Score and Caravan modes also use the NA board, so I'm guessing they're identical otherwise.

I wonder if the actual Japan PCB's quiz toggle is similarly dummied.

Glad you figured out the Kim Basinger toggle, in any case! Every arcade - scratch that, it'd miss Shadow Dancer MD... every game ever made should've had a bonus skip option. Including Sunset Riders which was released later Image Image

at least in Shinobi and Shadow Dancer AC you can just do nothing and fail in very short order. but i quite like those bonus games tbh, unlike the unskippable and dreadfully boring Shadow Dancer MD bonus. ironic
