Best 27" monitor for shmups on a Switch using a rotabable stand

Post by neorichieb1971 »

Hi everyone,

A few years ago I bought a joystick, a switch and a lot of Cave games. But I haven't used any of them because I haven't set up my screen yet.

I was going for an ultra LG 27" IPS.

But then I bought one and used it for something else, and noticed there is light bleed.

So then I said to myself, get an OLED. But they start at 1440p.

So would you go for a 27" 1080p monitor that is IPS.

Or a more expensive 27" 1440p OLED for this application? The monitor would be for a dedicated shmups station. I have another switch in my game room for the other types of games.

Would you go for the Mclassic in this scenario?
Do Cave shmups graphics look bad out of its 1080p shell on a 1440p monitor?
Has anyone tried this setup?
Is OLED the best suited screen for this application? Is it a waste of money for what it is?

Or should I buy a small ish TV instead?

I would probably TATE it since the screen is quite small.

Thanks for any feedbacks.

mClassic only has one real use case, that's it's 3D anti-aliasing. It should never be used for 2D games.

I don't think anyone can tell you if OLED is worth the extra money to you, or how 1080p to 1440p upscaling will look to you.

It sounds a bit like you just need to make a choice and enjoy what you have. I'm convinced any good new screen will look great in it's own right.

"...but it has lightbleed"
"...but it's not OLED"
"...but the resolution isn't right"
"...but it's a small screen"
No offense but it seems like you're making it really difficult for yourself to just enjoy the games.

I bought this three years ago and it's great. I would assume there are better ones since then:

I would advise if you get a 1440 monitor to restrict your Switch's output to 720p.

It is actually introducing aliasing and does not do any anti-aliasing.

Agreed. If I bought something and it became apparent that there is a major flaw i'd be sitting on few 100 dollars worth of monitor I wouldn't use.

I think the best thing to do is get my Switch downstairs and plug the damn thing into the monitor I originally bought for the purpose and see how it performs. At the moment its plugged into a Turbo Duo and some of the games have black borders which emit light from the back screen as its IPS. I thought to get round that go OLED but the smallest is 27" at 1440p. Some folk thing 1440p is ok on the switch, some not.

I bought an Innocn 15.6" 1080p oled monitor off of Amazon.com a few years back to use with my Switch and the colors really give that slick maximum punch/vibrancy -- watching streaming anime via the Switch app, Crunchyroll, is quite something to behold indeed. I bought an adjustable tablet rotating stand for the 15.6" oled monitor so I can play those Switch stgs that support tate. Playing in 720p and 1080p formats with a docked Switch with this particular oled monitor is awesome (especially when the monitor is adjusted to your tailored/personal tastes/liking, colors really "pop" -- you really have to see it "in person" to truly appreciate it for what it is -- and no "light bleed issues" to deal with either like with an IPS-based monitor setup). Playing Steam Deck based stgs through a docking station hooked up to the 15.6" oled monitor works equally just as cool as well.

https://www.amazon.com/INNOCN-Portable- ... =8-19&th=1 One Amazon reviewer said that it uses an Samsung manufactured oled panel set-up which is considered high-quality to begin with. Of course, "your milage may vary" depending on what the 1080p oled monitor is used with.

If you want the retro scanline effect with some retro Switch based stgs, an external HD scanline generator (SLG) will do the trick if no scanline filters are available in-game for completeness.

ASUS has announced the PG27UCDM, which is to be a 27" 4K OLED monitor. Most likely running at 240 Hz. While no details are available at this time, if we assume that it has a similar feature set to the PG32UCDM, it should feature black frame insertion, though potentially only for 120 Hz input. When paired with a RetroTINK 4K and a rotatable VESA stand, it's probably going to be the closest thing to what you're asking for.

Note that the RetroTINK 4K will only output a 120 Hz signal at 1440p at most (due to the 600 Mhz output pixel clock limitation), so unless ASUS decides to extend the native BFI implementation down to 60 Hz unlike the 32" version, you'll have to pick between scaling to 4K and doing BFI.

Not sure if you don't know what the mClassic is; it does anti-aliasing by the most commonly used definition of the term; or this is bait to go on a weird semantic tirade.

If it's the former, I recommend you watch Digital Foundry's video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P-NhX9-_KE0
The mClassic smooths out aliasing artifacts from a too low rendering resolution. That said it does also do scaling and sharpening of the image, both which introduces aliasing artifacts of its own.

the Asus monitor sounds like a good thing. I only want it for the Switch but will appreciate that its a bit overkill.
