BUMP OF CHICKEN TOUR 2024 Sphery Rendezvous FINAL

Image

Today was my 20th time seeing BUMP.

Just as I was there on the first two days, I was there on the last two days. Got a pretty great seat today, too, which I indicated the general location of yesterday. I was surprised at how nice this seat was.

Image

They were just as good today as they were yesterday, and Fuji-kun was maybe even a little better. He sang レム differently from last night, whispering the last line instead of singing it normally, and I seem to recall him singing 邂逅 a little differently at Belluna Dome, as he sang some of the final lines using imitation instead of simultaneously with his pre-recorded voice on the backing track as I seem to remember him doing before. Chama talked about the same stuff as yesterday, but Fuji-kun had a pretty emotional speech after ray tonight.

Day 2 setlist, exactly the same as at Belluna Dome, except for one thing

DOUBLE ENCORE!!!!

Fuji-kun was supposed to give his closing remarks after the others left the stage, but instead, maybe he couldn't find the words, so he grabbed his Les Paul Special again and gave us a very unplanned 花の名 just like at the end of aurora ark in 2019. Like last time, because they didn't plan for this, they didn't have the backing synth and strings like it's supposed to. Like last time, the others had to run back and grab their instruments to join, but this time Hiro had the right guitar and didn't have any trouble deciding when to start playing like last time. After that, they all left the stage, and although Fuji-kun normally does his big speech at the end, he gave a short speech instead.

This was a good year for BUMP for me. Yesterday I broke my record for seeing them the most times in a single year and today I broke that record again. It's only been a few hours since I saw them leave the stage and I already miss them so much. I really hope I can see them again soon. No goodbyes, just good memories.

Homesick Eisei 2024 doesn't stop!

Today's the 17th anniversary of the release of orbital period, and BUMP decided to not only release all of the audio files from the show that I went to in April losslessly without warning earlier today, but they also put all of them on Youtube and they're doing it for the day before I went, complete with a huge and expensive Blu-ray box with the entire thing on both BD and CD, and they're releasing a PV for 飴玉の唄 of all things on the 21st!

My orbital period is all beaten up after travelling around the world with me several times... I don't know how much I'm going to listen to it now that I am going to have live recordings of the entire album and its B-sides save one song from the album and one B-side, especially with most of those from a day that I actually was there, but I wouldn't be who or where I am now if this album hadn't existed. It's special to them, hence the glorious super ultra platinum deluxe treatment it got this year, and it's special to me and I'll always love it so much.

Image

Not listening to orbital period now but rather the newly released .flac files from the Homesick Eisei 2024 final. These .flac files sound way better than the audio on the Blu-ray from September does, so I am extremely happy. BUMP, never stop doing this to me. Humanity doesn't deserve you guys at all...

Currently immersed in the posthumous Planes Mistaken For Stars album 'Do You Still Love Me?'.
It's quite possibly their best album, and utterly fucking heartbreaking.

Other than that:
Chat Pile - Cool World
Benton Falls - Fighting Starlight
Jerry Cantrell - I Want Blood
Sunny Day Real Estate - Diary Live - think i prefer this to the original

Omodaka, a Japanese dj who mixes 8-bit sounds, traditional folk (Japanese) music, multi-media installations and a good amount of club/house (more info here). He rides the fine line between “original” and “camp” with grace.

Lots of Redd Kross because I just got the book above^ a couple days ago, and I just finished it. Easiest 320 pages I've ever read.

I was really excited for this one though because these two brothers, Jeff and Steve McDonald, have been almost constantly referenced to in the many books I've read about L.A. bands from the 60's to present. These brothers started the band at the ages of 15 and 11, and their first recordings feature Greg Hetson (Circle Jerks/Bad Religion) on guitar and Ron Reyes (a pre-Henry Rollins Black Flag singer) on drums. The name-drops only increase from there as these two Hollywood kids continue their 45-year career. Great stories!

There's also a documentary out in small theaters right now, but not yet streaming to my knowledge. Here's the trailer:

Most every time I'm at Book-Off I'll peruse the jazz fusion section, less for old favourites, more for potential new ones - then pull a Sneaky Sue and just go listen to it at home rather than pay Japanese secondhand CD prices.
Unless it does turn out to be a new favourite, in which case I'll head back to the store.
A bit more dreamy, a bit less groove-soaked and somehow a bit more latently sinister than my usual jam, but I guess I'm heading back to the store.
Soaking in it.

Yeah, it's Aria - Careless Angel and Cinema - Blood Type respectively, I think.
Both swiped from this pleasantly moody S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Radio playlist.

Just bought SDE's Elton Johns "Diamonds" on blu ray audio.

51 songs, 49 of them are in 5.1 surround. A very good disc for audio quality. I love buying the 5.1 discs because they always go out of print and end up going up up up in price. I have about 50 surround discs.
This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.

Does the tune in stage 1-2 in Hagane (SNES) not sound almost exactly like Rayforce/Layer Section (etc)?

Interesting. I remember Redd Kross mostly because of the song Annie's Gone, which featured a lot on WHFS (now defunct independent radio station from College Park MD) when I was in HS, but also because Kurt Cobain said he loved Neurotica, and it was foolish not to check out anything Cobain name-dropped; that's how I discovered The Vaseline's after all.

Wasn't aware of the early LA punk connections, although it makes perfect sense.

Been listening a bunch to this collection of tracks from Spanish electronic composer Charles Esposito. His work, and the work he did with Musica Esporadico is legendary and amazing.

It's kind of like proto video game BGM or movie theme stuff, but very minimal. Also has a lot of it's Spanish influence apparent. I have had this LP since the Dutch label Choon released it last year, but I only really got around to listening to it recently. It's fantastic; a lot more bare than most of his other stuff, but still got a great groove to it.

Choon put it together with Mark Griffy, who runs the Ultravillage label, dedicated to the preservation of "New Age" music. I recommend anyone interested in that topic check out his site and his YouTube Channel.

The whole album is here:

The voyage through space continues; HOMESICK EISEI 2024, one more, and final, time. I got this LP-sized box with an LP-sized sleeve holding a BD, 2 CDs, and various goods in the mail today.

Image

This is day 1 of the tour final, which was the day before I went. Today is the final day of BUMP's 28th year of existence, and so it's the final day of the first part of that existence, a complete revolution and a return to the starting point of the 28-year cycle, which will begin again tomorrow. Most people don't celebrate the 28th anniversary of anything, but they should, and BUMP did before with the release of orbital period for their 28th birthdays, as noted in the diagram, and they did again with HOMESICK EISEI 2024 for the band itself.

The day 1 performance was... I'd say it was really amazing, but it's BUMP, so that's completely obvious; everyone knows BUMP is even better live than in the studio. This, like day 2, is one of the best performances I've ever seen them do, and Fuji-kun was just as good on both days. Both days combine to give a complete experience, with the entirety of orbital period being performed brilliantly across both days save one song. The audio quality and balance on the BD is quite good in most cases, although there was one point where the backup vocals were too quiet. Have listened to only a few things from the CDs so far, but they seem to be probably largely identical, unlike the day 2 audio files, which seem to have a different mastering and balance levels than the audio on the day 2 BD. I'm also sick now and my sinuses are kind of messed up, so who knows.

I selfishly wish that day 2, the day that I was there, had also gotten this deluxe treatment with the huge and super expensive box set instead of getting the BD put in the limited edition version of that disappointing album Iris and with the audio sold separately some months later, and I'm equally disappointed that they seem committed to 1080p BDs instead of moving to 4K, but I'm glad I have both days' video recordings and audio files at all, so I'm not going to complain. Hopefully they'll do it for Sphery Rendezvous, but I'm not counting on it.

Tomorrow's going to be the one year anniversary of the start of this tour, and yet it feels like it never stopped, and continues to keep going. Only a few hours left now... time to listen to ガラスのブルース (28 years round), which I am surprised that they didn't play at all last year, and go watch the stream just before midnight.

Lucio Corsi - Volevo Essere un Duro
Spoiler
Volevo essere un duro
I wanted to be a tough guy

Che non gli importa del futuro
Who doesn't care about the future

Un robot
A robot

Un lottatore di sumo
A sumo wrestler

Uno spaccino in fuga da un cane lupo
A drug dealer on the run from a wolf dog

Alla stazione di Bolo
At the Bolo station

Una gallina dalle uova d'oro
A goose that lays golden eggs

Però non sono nessuno
But I'm nobody

Non sono nato con la faccia da duro
I wasn't born with a tough face

Ho anche paura del buio
I'm also afraid of the dark

Se faccio a botte le prendo
if I get into a fight they'll beat me up

Così mi truccano gli occhi di nero
So they paint my eyes black

Ma non ho mai perso tempo
But I never wasted time

E lui che mi ha lasciato indietro
it's the time that left me behind

(CHORUS)
Vivere la vita
Living life

E un gioco da ragazzi
It's child's play

Me lo diceva mamma ed io
my mother told me, and i

Cadevo giù dagli alberi
fell down from the trees

Quanto è duro il mondo
How hard is the world

Per quelli normali
For the normal ones

Che hanno poco amore intorno
Who have little love around

O troppo sole negli occhiali
Or too much sun in their glasses

Volevo essere un duro
I wanted to be tough

Che non gli importa del futuro no
That doesn't care about the future no

Un robot
A robot

Medaglia d'oro di sputo
Gold medal of spit

Lo scippatore che t'aspetta nel buio
The pickpocket who waits for you in the dark

Il Re di Porta Portese
The King of Porta Portese

La gazza ladra che ti ruba la fede
The magpie that steals your wedding ring

Volevo essere un duro
I wanted to be tough

Però non sono nessuno
But I'm nobody

Cintura bianca di Judo
White belt in Judo

Invece che una stella uno starnuto
Instead of a star a sneeze

I girasoli con gli occhiali mi hanno
The sunflowers with glasses told me

"Stai attento alla luce"
"Be careful of the light"

E che le lune senza buche
And that moons without holes

Sono fregature
are scams

Perché in fondo è inutile fuggire
Because in the end there is no point in escaping

Dalle tue paure
From your fears

I knew Stabb a bit. He dated the older sister of my friend in HS, and he worked at the local record store down the street. Generally a sweet guy, and was sad when he passed.

Yeah, he was pretty involved with goings on and the community as such. I certainly wasn't buddies with him though. If anything we had a slightly complicated relationship, but that's neither here nor there.

He worked at a record store / venue called Phantasmagoria in Wheaton, MD in the 90s. It was an amazing venue and the kind of place you don't ever see anymore. The owner, Bobby, also had a microbrewery that he ran out of the back of the place, and they sold their own beer at shows. I believe that this dynamic is sadly what ran them into the ground as there were some complicated financials that made it difficult to keep going. He also had a "brewers corner" in the record shop where you could buy your own home brewing tools. Kinda fun. Honestly, I really miss Bobby a lot.

The venue had some pretty epic shows as well. My buddies opened up for High on Fire in their early days there. That album isn't their typical line-up as the normal drummer was Tommy Carr, who was also known as the drummer for Black Market Baby, a super early Dischord band. Joe Hasselvander is drumming and also is the recording engineer on that particular version of their stuff. Joe was originally in Raven and then later joined Bobby for the 1980s incarnation of Pentagram called Death Row before they changed their name back.

Oh yeah, big Pentagram fan here and I've seen Raven w/ Hasselvander. Last time I saw Pentagram was in 2019 in Lancaster, PA. Didn't know anyone else in that Pentagram lineup outside of Bobby but they totally killed. Still never saw them with Victor Griffin though.

Just got back from Tatsujin Matsuri, which is my first live of the year. Yonao Keishi's band, Uemura Tatsuya's band, and Sato Go Band all played, and then the main dudes from each band plus Ikeda-san from Mikado did some stuff together.

Yonao-san's band played most of FixEight's soundtrack and then almost all of Batsugun's soundtrack minus stage 3 for some reason. U-Brand did stuff from Same! Same! Same!, Out Zone, Touhou, Zero Wing, Hishouzame for the first time, Dogyuun!!, Kyuukyoku Tiger, and Hellfire, and Sato Go Band played Tatsujin's entire soundtrack. Finally, during the special time, the main guys + Ikeda-san did Tatsujin Ou stage 1 and Break a Leg! from KyuuTai. Toaplan sure had some fucking incredible music, and Sato-san's band in particular was awesome, as they always are.

Got three new CDs today: Sato-san's new complete Tatsujin arranged soundtrack, U-Brand's first album with the new Against The Attack and Over The Sea, and finally the new band GAMETAL's demo CD for one of BIL's favourites, I DEFEND STM from Tatsujin Ou. The Tatsujin CD is really good.

Image

Ended up talking to Sato-san for like an hour about Dead Space and Corpse Party afterwards and ran out of time to get anything signed. Oops. No pictures because I was lazy and didn't feel like taking any.

The arrange is good, too. I've always liked I DEFEND STM, even if I have no idea what STM is supposed to be. Somehow I don't think it's supposed to be Scanning Tunneling Microscopy. The band is bassist-less and looking for one, so there's a no bass version on here as well for people to use for recording and submission. I haven't played in almost a decade, so I'm not going to try for it.
