Just went to see ELO last night. Well, it's basically Jeff Lynne singing ELO songs with a backing band and a string section, but it felt like ELO and they had a good light show.

He says this is his last time out on tour as ELO, so I wanted to catch it; I was not disappointed. He did miss the start to a song or two, and he fumbled a tiny bit here and there, but damn did he do well for almost 80. It was kind of touching that he took lead by himself on everything too. I got to say, it was every bit as engaging and energetic as the albums ever were to me, and I felt moved by seeing him up there on stage, still keeping it going. The rendition of "Can't Get it Out of my Head" was of particular note.

There was a certain poignancy to seeing Jeff do this for once last time, as though it was nearing the time when the memories of "Telephone Line" would finally be set adrift.

Started me down a bit of rabbit hole of early Lynne and Wood compositions. I already had all the ELO stuff, Jeff Lynne's Idle Race and most of the Move albums, but I dug deeper.

It makes me wonder what could have been if Lynne and Wood had been able to put aside whatever happened during the creation of ELO and work together again. As the story goes, Wood created ELO and brought Lynne on board, only to be alienated by Lynne's desire to pursue a more mainstream sound and Wood's erratic behavior on stage. Wood went on to have a number of singles in the UK during the few years after his departure from ELO, but quickly sank into obscurity as ELO's fortunes turned a corner and soared. There were about 5-6 songs of Wood's that charted in that in-between time, the most successful was "See My Baby Jive," which is here played live on TOTP, but then overdubbed by the poster.

Image

When I listen to Wood's later output, it strikes me as sad that he never again found a platform to support his mad, wild performance art, and he and Lynne never really could reconcile musically. They did record some material together at the end of the 80s, but it was scrapped and never released. At least they stayed friends, and who knows, maybe now that ELO is over, Lynne, Wood and Bev Bevans might do a weird little Move tour.

As posted elsewhere, spent quite a number of hours wathing MTV 80s. There are things YouTube does not have to be experienced there, I think. Some real nerd's delight, that. If you have access to this channel and some hours to burn - you're in for a treat. It can become a journey like no other. Sabrina's Boys (Summertime Love) is censored, but maybe MTV always showed it this way? Anyway, it's all very educational.

The Super Star Solider soundtrack showed up in my autoplay list this evening.

It's been a few years since I've played this.

Gameplay wise, Super Star Soldier is pretty mid, but god damn the OST rips.

Kinda got that John Williams composing for Star Wars Episode 1 energy. The soundtrack didn't need to go this hard and have this much effort for a final product that's just kinda okay.

Sadlyl, music has taken a backseat in my life. I still go out, and still listen to stuff from time to time, but I have no time to devote to finding much new stuff. So I was delighted when my phone showed me Virtual Dreams II: Ambient Explorations in the House and Techno Age, Japan 1993 - 1999. Absolutely ZERO mystery in the title. Sounds good from the samples. 15 Euros is a bit steep for my liking for digital, but the vinyl goes up to fucking $65 USD with the international shipping, so that's out. I don't recognize a single act from listing, so hoping it leads me to some interesting finds.

Big ass album art:

Outstanding performance of a standout track! Really illustrates the song's character, breezy yet full of rooftop-scampering joie de vivre. There's an instant sub.

Hot damn!
I was already on my way back to this thread to post his hot Kirby Superstar and slick Pilotwings 64 covers.
The latter is only a miserable thirty seconds long but at least made me realise I need a full album arrange done by him.
Maybe it was by dint of spending so many hours with it shortly after the N64's launch, but I reckon PW64 was my first proper introduction to jazz/fusion/lounge and for that I owe it a hell of a lot.

Glorious - wish him nothing but the best!
Gotta admit I would've slept on Pokerus just on the name alone, but I appreciate that they do really understated prog work, not going for face-melting right off the bat like a lot of game rock/metal cover bands.
Their DKC2 cover won me over - delicate arrangement of Wise's work, with parts of the PV apparently shot on location at a KoF02 stage!

Today I went to the airport. The reason: to see BUMP OF CHICKEN, obviously. What else does one go to the airport for?

BUMP OF CHICKEN TOUR 2024 Sphery Rendezvous

Day 12

Image

Been to see BUMP very many times and been to live houses very many times, but today was my first time seeing BUMP in a live house.

Not a bad spot, either: relatively close to the front and not too far away from Chama, so I got an extremely good view of him and an excellent view of Fuji-kun. My first person view was this

Image

It's day 1 at Zepp Haneda Tokyo, so that means day 1 setlist, exactly the same as last time save the encore, and even that was 50% identical. Sometimes they have special live house setlists that are different from the dome/stadium shows, but not this time. That's kind of both good and disappointing, as while I still feel that this tour has the weakest setlists I've ever seen them do, there are still some super rare things in here that it's nice to see as many times as possible before they go away for a decade again. The acoustics in this place are good, but it's a major professional live house, so that's expected.

You have to pay a 600 yen drink fee to get in, and I paid in cash but pocketed my change and didn't bother to get a drink because I wanted to get a good spot, especially because I was already late due to forgetting about the drink fee and having to exit the line to go find an ATM. Along with my change, I pocketed the drink token since I didn't bother to check what I was given until I got to the train station on the way home... oops. Guess I got an unintentional free souvenir.

Notable stuff: Chama did something that I'd never seen before: backup vocals on 記念撮影. Maybe he did it last time, but I sure don't remember, and he never did it during any previous tours. I also noticed that he actually has something to do on レム prior to the new band arrange craziness: he stood there for a few minutes playing his bass with an Ebow, which I failed to notice the previous two times. I wonder if he has his own Ebow or if he borrowed Fuji-kun's.

Next, day 1 means 飴玉の唄, and the solo was different from last time which was also different from the first time. The first time was a beautiful emotional solo, the second time was the famous crazy solo from 2008, and this time was somewhere in between. I guess Fuji-kun just makes up a solo on the spot every time. Finally, encore was 虹を待つ人 (again, but this time with some ギター増川弘明!!!) and スノースタイル, which is nice because it's something that I've seen only twice before, and the first time was that acoustic version in 2013 and the other was that famous unplanned double encore on the last day of their 2019 tour, which was exactly 5 years and 1 day ago, so this is somehow the first time I've actually seen a non-weird version.

Well, uh, spoilers, but this isn't over yet and the next time I'm going is also a day 1 show, so I get to see the exact same stuff soon enough, but they might do something special during the encore next time since it will be the appropriate time of year, December, which is when they usually play Merry Christmas, and I absolutely hope they do because I fucking love Merry Christmas.

The Cure are one of those bands that I always kinda knew their songs in the background but never really paid them that much mind, but a few years ago it all clicked and they’re one of my favorite bands now.

I kept on leveling up as a Cure fan every couple years until they became my favorite band. They were not an instant success for me.

The Head On The Door is my favorite album and I strongly recommend this concert film if you hadn't caught it yet

I got that on Laserdisc in the 90s, but I didn't fuck with a Laserdisc player because only my dad owned one. Nice to see it all remastered on the yt

Oh, yes, anytime, anywhere, without the slightest hint of shame! But I do love most his creations. Thank you for your genius, Mr. Corea

I listened to the whole thing recently. For me everything after Wish is unlistenable and sadly this one didn't buck the trend. :( I don't really have the heart to savage it though, The Cure is too much a part of my youth, feels like kicking grandpa or something.

I was always on the fence about Wish even. It's good, but coming after Disintegration it was certainly a bit of a snooze. I think at the time, I just let the quality of Wish kind of slide in my mind because I figured they couldn't possibly knock it out of the park every time (I never really liked most of Kiss me, Kiss me, Kiss me), but then when album after album they never again delivered, Wish started to look less like a decent transitionary album and more like their first step downward.

I think it's mainly the loss of Tolhurst. He was the one that reined in Smith's worst show-tunes tendencies, and kept things a bit more grounded and minimalist. Without him, Smith of course still has his amazing guitar work, but the songwriting and production is just incomplete. It's only really "The Cure" with Lol. Everything else is only the cure in name, but more like "The Robert Smith Experience."

I just listened to the Mixed Up remix album yesterday. I have the cassette and it's notable for not being recorded in Dolby.

haha yeah, I actually feel similarly about Wish. It's a bit of a guilty pleasure for me though. Interesting theory about Tolhurst, I've heard variations on this before but I'm not that knowledgeable about all the inside baseball with The Cure and lineup changes, drama, etc. Might be fun to read a biography sometime, haha, considering how big a part of my youth they were. Been years since I listened to Mixed Up too, have to give that a spin on the nice speakers sometime!

I liked Wish, but didn't love it. Honestly I've not given it as much time as it should... while everything medium of Disintegration I've owned has been worn out. Such a timeless album. They do have a lot of amazing ones prior to it, and I don't think it's controversial to say anything after was off the charts. I do like this new one quite a bit, and find it about as noteworthy as Depeche Mode's last album which felt like a return to form for me.

Don't get the Wish hate. As long as you pretend that "Friday" isn't on it, it's a great album actually and just as dark as any of their albums. Plus the B-sides of the album are good too. Fit alongside the shoegaze movement of the time.

Saw this intro to the "Show" concert film the other week and damn, the nostalgia. I loved when girls looked like that.

I don't hate Wish by any stretch... I just haven't invested as much in it. I was trying to hunt it down on vinyl for ages but the prices are crazy town... and didn't investigate if the represses/bootlegs are worth a shit. Often they are not.

Well seeing as how I haven't given it a chance, I guess I would on your rec. I don't think Smith has many "bad" albums really, they just haven't been blessed by the muses like Disintegration and some earlier LPs were. Kiss me is about the only early album I don't love, and even then some of the material is fantastic, I just really hate all the Broadway showtunes garbage on it like Why Can't I Be You and Hot Hot Hot! It's hard to reconcile those songs on the same album as Just Like Heaven.

No Wish hate, and I like Friday I'm in Love just fine. It's maybe the highlight of the album. It's the rest of it that gets a little too murky without maintaining a groove the way those kinds of songs do on earlier albums. It's not bad, but they did it better on 9 of their previous 10 albums. Just saying.

Really cool video: Coldplay - All My Love

The little bit at the end is great too. It's crazy how he can make up a song on the spot while playing it and singing it and making it rhyme. What the fuck.

BUMP OF CHICKEN TOUR 2024 Sphery Rendezvous

Day 18

Image
Image

TOKYO DOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I haven't been here since the last time they were here.

I got the exact same setlist that they played at Zepp Haneda, so I have nothing to say about the setlist, but today, for the first time, I thought that Fuji-kun's face is finally showing some minor signs of aging. I remember when he was a decade younger than I am now, and now he's almost 50. Or maybe he just gained a little weight for the first time in his life. That's probably a good thing because the dude always looks emaciated and as if he's about to die of starvation. He's nearly 6 feet tall but supposedly only weighs about 100 lbs somehow. Fuck dude, eat some food or something!

Chama asked if anyone had been there at Belluna Dome (*raises hand*! I was there! Twice!), and for a while we reminisced about those first two days of the tour. "Remember how hot it was?" Yes, Chama, I am doing my best to forget the excruciating heat, but now that you reminded me, I will have additional difficulty in doing so. He also apologized for the new Transformers good selling out, as they sold out before I even got there.

This place is massive and the sound echoes a lot. During the super quiet moments of レム, it was very easy to hear the echo, and the echoing

誰かが呟いた 「汚れてしまった」
その肩を叩いた その手も汚れてた

seemed to be the very essence of chuunibyou. Beautiful song.

Unfortunately, I was sufficiently far away that they were tiny little blobs on stage and I had to look at the monitors for most of the show. I somehow ended up in almost exactly the same place I was in last time I was here.

First person view from before the show and after the show:
