The Saturn Tribute debacle really fucked these guys, because CC's main team has been turning in good homework for quite some time now.

Psyvariar Delta, Game Tengoku Remix, Deathsmiles I + II, and Akai Katana are all must-haves from this generation of ports IMO. These are the guys doing Under Defeat. Going to be fine - maybe a few issues at launch, but they're reliable enough for the fix.

Indeed. It really did a number on their reputation.

Even in the Saturn Tribute series, they did good work with the PC versions of Elevator Action Returns, and Metal Black (well, with the later I have a problem using the analogue stick on my controller, but besides that, it's a very competent release).

Trailer dropped. Looks like it’s coming to PS4/5 + Switch in early December. Unfortunately, looks like other versions are TBD.

Looking good. I don’t know previous releases well enough to distinguish between what’s new here, and what’s been available since Under Defeat HD in the PS3 era. Easy pickup for me since I missed it last time around.

At first sight it appears to be identical to the HD version for PS3/360.
Day1 for me, even if it dismantles my shopping schedule... and even if it's City Connection mmh...

EDIT:
https://cohost.org/gosokkyu/post/722580 ... eat-switch

City Connection's port of G.rev's 2005 vertical chopper STG Under Defeat, which was first announced at a STG-centric event a few months ago, now has a Japanese release date: it'll be out December 5 for Switch, PS4 and PS5, both digitally (¥3980), physically (¥4960, Switch/PS5 only) and as a limited-edition box with a fanbook and CD soundtrack (¥8800).

This port's based on the "HD+" version of the remaster G.rev released for X360/PS3/Nesica and includes all the DLC and content updates from that version, plus some extras like visible rank/destruction values, subtitles for the radio chatter and a new additional soundtrack by original composer Shinji Hosoe and his colleagues at Super Sweep.

a couple points:

City Connection has multiple different teams and methods of porting/reissuing old games; this release is being ported (not emulated) from the existing codebase by the same team behind recent X350-derived ports like Deathsmiles I+II and Akai Katana, so forget about Cotton Boomerang or the Psikyo ports or whatever because those issues won't be a factor here

they initially announced this port for Xbox and PC in addition to the above platforms, and I'm sure those versions are still coming—in an effort to appease global physical publishers, CC and other smaller Japanese publishers have been flip-flopping on including multi-language support in their Japanese SKUs, holding back digital releases or certain platform SKUs for the sake of a simultaneous release or one that won't undercut the orders for physical versions, etc so I'm sure they're just waiting on some publisher to get their shit together (and how long that might take, I don't know)

Assuming City Connection doesn't mess it up, I take it that there is probably no point in playing this on Dreamcast instead of the modern rereleases, right? I do want to play this game and I also kind of want to play it on Dreamcast just because it's the damn Dreamcast, but it's getting a bit expensive and I'd rather not pay that much for an optical disc.

Under Defeat and Raiden IV took up a lot of my time on thr PS3. It's an excellent game and I am delighted it will get a PC port.

Great soundtrack and perhaps the most satisfying bomb ever too.

I mean, if you just want to play it, an optical disc with run you about 75 cents

I know piracy is killing the Dreamcast and all...

For all the grief people give these guys, they're able to consistently get series of low print physical games with LEs out the door without having to spend 2 years grappling with the intricacies of cardboard boxes and losing.

Looks like Clear River is handling the Western release which means it will probably be sold through LRG.

While that's true and all, Clear River's titles lately have been wide retail releases, so you can still be able to normally buy DeathSmiles I/II and Akai Katana Shin at Amazon and the like. No need to resort to LRG.

When they haven't disappeared into the ether - as per their Western release of Batsugun S-Tribute. Not holding out much hope for Leynos 2 at this rate - Clear River have loads supposedly coming in 2024 already and no news is usually bad news.

Yes, Border Down is fantastic.

UD is amazing as well, played the heck out of that on my DC back in college.

Well, LRG typically takes one year, so I guess that's a marginal improvement...

Mikado showed footage of the 2024 City Connection version today. The menu shows Arcade, New Order, New Order Plus, and practice modes for all three. DLC choppers are in as well.

They really sharpened it (probably to show off the smoke/trees/debris)
Both the arc/dc versions and the ps3/360 HD versions were more muted, and had a grain to it. Either they've really brightened and sharpened, or it's just not done yet

I mean, looking back at it, it doesn't seem as exciting as when I played it, and that was already the New Order version, not even as difficult... the bullets are mostly slow and the helicopter is quite fast, I remember exactly only 3 points where the game was more difficult (Boss 2, MidBoss in Stage 5 and the final Boss).

I think part of the issue with that video is the DLC chopper doesn't use the charge-up mechanic for deploying special weapons. Which makes the game look significantly less cool imo.

The only excuse that these 2 don't have modern ports is somehow they lost the original code.

Yeah, that's the thing, I dunno anything on Psyvariar, but as for Border Down, I doubt that G.Rev actually lost source code to a Dreamcast/Naomi game, unless otherwise. I mean, lately, plenty of DC era STG's did see modern ports being released. Either in the form of updated ports (like both versions of Triggerheart Exelica, and most of the Cotton series so far, especially the older titles), or versions frankensteined (either from Arcade and/or Console) to make them work. I mean, yeah, G.Rev would most likely have source data for Under Defeat HD and Mamoru-Kun Curse since they had previous ports before and have City Connection handle the rest. Maybe one of these days, Border Down can finally get a modern release, if possible.

Even if they did, it's not real relevant anyway. Several devs are on record stating they don't want to port 'x', because just making an an entirely new game is a much easier endeavor, with one (I can't recall which) saying the process is like 'telling a rock band to re-record an album they released in 1973, but to be sure everything sounds exactly the same'

Missing source code doesn't matter because you don't have to port it; just put it in an emulator instead. You don't need the source code for that.

I just play Border Down on My Dreamcast or Naomi. If I need to play it anywhere else ReDream works fantastic on my Phone , PC and Laptop. At this point I could care less if it is ported. Same with Psyvariar 2 which I play on Dreamcast , Naomi , and Xbox. And if not on them ReDream.
