A Late Miracle: Wireless Joycons with a Good D-Pad

Post by jehu »

In another episode of a very long quest to try to find a set of wireless Joycons that make TATE shmups playable with a Flip-Grip, I bought the Mobapad M6 HDs.

https://www.mobapad.com/products/mobapad-m6-hd

And, by god, for the first time I think we've found an amenable solution. I'll do my best to eschew my native prolixity to give you a simple rundown, with some added details in spoiler tags.

Overview

The main thing is: you can comfortably play TATE STGs with your flipgrip with these things. That's the major revelation here, and for that alone it's a recommend from me.

The D-Pad on this thing is actually solid. They use a pretty soft feeling set of microswitches. Tap-dodging feels great, as does steering. I might say that the microswitches might almost be a touch soft for my taste. I think I'd still give my preference to the membrane D-Pad of Hori's Split Pad, but that might only be because I've grown very accustomed to it in the past three years. Regardless, compared to any other wireless option, it's an enormous, enormous improvement.
Spoiler
If you've also been trying to find a solution to the FlipGrip Joycon problem for a long time, you'll know that one of the leading solutions was to replace the shell of Nintendo's stock joycons with an aftermarket shell with a dpad. The solution sucked because the stock arrow-key switches on the Joycons were very stiff, and not conducive to subtle button inputs. For this reason, I was hesitant about the Mobapad microswitches, but now I can confirm that they're much softer. The difference between unplayable and playable.
The package I bought from the Mobapad website includes swappable d-pad option: a traditional 4-way pad, or a circular 8-way pad. It's just a plastic piece that is designed to fit over the microswitches. For now, to my surprise, I actually prefer the latter, though the 4-way pad feels just fine, too.
Spoiler
There's also swappable faceplates for the joycons included that let you install octogates for your analog sticks. I don't have a use for this, but it's a neat inclusion. Faceplates are held on my magnets. Assume it's a pretty easy swap, though I haven't done it myself. The analog sticks on these things are meant to prevent drift, but I almost never play games that require analog stick use.
They also maintain HD Rumble and Six-Axis functionality. Haven't tested these extensively, but it's cool that they're here.

They're a touch bulky for my taste. Think something along the lines of the OG Split Pad.

When I play horizontal shooters, I prefer the SplitPad on the lefthand side of my Switch and a stock Nintendo joycon attached to the righthand side. Ergonomics or whatever. I tried doing something similar with the Mobipads (Mobypad on left, Joycon on right), but it seemed to cause compatibility issues. Not sure why, but worth noting.

Unknowns

I've had these things for only a few days, so lots I still don't know. Will they be durable? How will the microswitches wear? How much latency is introduced when they're being used wirelessly? I have no clue. Hoping someone more technically inclined might be curious enough to pick these up and measure the latter. They feel fine though.

It would have been really fucking nice to have these in 2020. I hardly play on my Switch at all anymore, but I'm am glad that a solution finally made its way to market. If anyone else picks these up, post impressions.

Interesting. Why it has taken so long for something like this to appear is puzzling. No doubt because of the niche status of shmups.

Ha! I just bought their pro-controller about a month ago

I like it (not love). My two biggest wants/needs/desires was drift-proofing (god, I am over that shit) and a disc Genesis/Saturn-like d-pad, and my biggest issue is with the latter, in that the disc sitting on top of the cross hasn't stopped feeling a bit weird/awkward.

I agree on the impression. The d-pad is only good; what's great is that the hole in the market is finally filled with an acceptable solution.

I'm also surprised it took this long. I'd all but given up hope already.

Still waiting for one that actually has the d-pad in the proper location. I wonder mow much input lag it has. That's always a concern with Switch controllers, unfortunately, as they all seem to have relatively high input lag.

I agree on the impression. The d-pad is only good;
If they were going to do the whole disc/cross detachable thing, I wish they would had just ripped off the design of the Horipad* and made it inset.

*btw, I used to recommend the Horipad, but I don't anymore. The first one I owned took about two years before the drift was unfixable with tv tuner. The second starting drifting in a week. Thinking I just got a bad one, I returned it. It's replacement was twice as good, meaning it started drifting in two weeks.

I've had mine since April and they are holding up fine.
The white analog sticks are going slightly yellow but the d pad is still good.

I've gone through a bunch of other (Nyxi, Binbok etc) that have broken/failed pretty quickly.

Rip the analog components out and put some tape on it to cover the hole and there you go.

Hott Tipp: The pro-controller I mentioned above is currently $35 on amazon (part of their 'big-deal days' or whatever), and it is well worth that

I've had a lot more time with these since the original post, and my enthusiasm hasn't been tempered a bit since then.

There are so many games that benefit from handheld TATE mode with improved controls: everything from LiveWire's Cave ports, to Eschatos, the Cosmo Machina games, Steel Rondo etc. etc. and mountains and mountains of ACA games.

Enjoying DeltaZeal on Switch in the past few days. Thinking about snagging another pair of these boys just to put in storage in case they become hard to find in the future. Gamechanger for me.

For handheld vertical shmupping, it doesn't get much better

I too have had more time, and as I predicted, I've straight-up lost the cross d-pad. So now the controller is pretty much useless for games that are touchy about diagonals (i.e. every Hamster game I own)
