A-JAX and Flak Attack, two of Konami's lesser-knowns sporting some of the most singularly Konamic BGMs ever.

>FIGHTING SPIRIT from A-JAX
>COUNTER BLOW from Flak Attack - hey, kid, stop all the Dick Stock!
>STURDY WINGS from Trigon - a marginally better known STG with similarly blazing tunes, beloved of Hitoshi Sakimoto, feat. Michiru Yamane. Three is a magic number!

Having tracked down the link, I see I already posted COUNTER BLOW on the previous page! But the link's dead, and frankly, one good blow deserves another. Image The reedy tone actually reminds me more of Taito, but there's absolutely none of their haunting introspection - just balls-out do your best your have ever done Image

I recommend A-JAX; the 3D stages are a bit goofy, but easily cleared, brief, and infrequent. The straight topdowns are remarkably furied Xeviousesques, and it sports the rare advantage of a single balls-hard loop.

Flak Attack, I really want to love, but good lord - the bullet visibility can be absolutely punishing, and worse, there is a lightning bolt memoriser hazard that may be the most cynical in all of STG history. Even then, it's solid enough I could see myself working through it. At any rate, first-rate BGM from a largely forgotten game.

Woah, thanks for keeping this thread alive. I'm sorry I'm not able to keep on updating the playlist though.

Back on topic:

I really liked this one, I've noticed that game is part of the Arcade Archives releases as "Lightning Fighters", I might buy it just out of curiosity. Thanks!

My pleasure! It's a quality Toaplanesque, imo, though undeniably a bit on the punishing side. Nearer hardass Raiden than cheerful Daioh. Interestingly, the ACA version has a hitbox reduce option, effectively a comfier arrange mode (it's also an excellent way to see more of the game before taking on the PCB defaults).

With Daioh's director personally requesting (and receiving!) a Rank meter for its ACA release, I wonder if this was a similar case. On defaults, it's the kind of game where you need to pre-emptively sweep enemies, their shots being quick enough to clip your wing if you dodge from a standstill at middle distance or closer.

Regardless, the BGM is exceptionally fiery and driven, even by Konami's valorous standards - I was so happy to see it finally get a home release, having enjoyed its Shooting Battle arrangements for decades. On that AST tip, "Faraway" flat-out rips off Richie Blackmore's solo from Rainbow's "Starstruck." Exceptionally good taste, as expected of project lead and Anthem legend Naoto Shibata!

>Starstruck
>Lightningstruck

Plus one of the all-time great AST hair metal ballads in "Nostalgic" Image Image

Mucking about with HachaMecha Fighter, when it hits me with melancholy fire straight outta Raiden II. ;w;7

One of the most atmospherically distinctive games ever made. What can creatures do but fight. Image Image Its utter STG intensity is key to the effect, of course.

Christ that's beautiful Image Bloody Wolf n' KUU-GA dudes had some mahfuckin hair metal chops, brilliantly conveyed by the arranger. It's my headcanon they were in a bitter war with the other Gama Delic dudes and their funk/rap stuff! It's more amusing than their all being super-talented and versatile musicians who dug their King Crimson. Karnov's coming to town? Karnov can fuck off to the Super 8! I WANNA RAWWWK

Onto my LIGHTERS IN THE AIR MUHFUCKAS Image shortlist, chartered by Tsukumo's TEH LONGEST JOURNEY, aforementioned authentic Shibata jam SHOOTING BATTLE: NOSTALGIC, and the truly arresting final boss BGM from RAISINBAR III. (save last 4 when u want 2 RAWWK and CRYIN RN @ SAME TIME Image Image )

It is cheating slightly to involve Shibata, ofc. The man's power ballads will knock entire stadiums flat. Image He's so skillful, he can lift Into The Void wholesale without getting caught!

Lord, I wonder WTF Rayxanber III's OST was about... or the game, even! So plaintive. Bubble Economy Melancholia. Space Lobsters Must Die? 3; Goodbye Space Lobsters, why do it have 2 b this way Image

Not to get too glum, the Boss BGM Priests it up TURBO/RAM IT DOWN style. Image
That's 1 NICE GIF Image I see you too appreciate a good Itano Circus!

I liked xanber I's soundtrack the most, for better or for worse. For me it's that stage where you keep descending with the rotating boss. They made it so that he runs away as soon as the song ends, and he's hard to kill on time if you don't know what you're doing, I laughed pretty hard when it first happened to me and it left a good memory.

As a little tangent, each stage intro in rxI gives you dull 'destroy the boss' message, but then the final one hits you with an extra line:
Image
Which i think is a very nice exercise in how much hype you can achieve with the smallest tools.

Destroy Final Target RED LOBSTER

That early 90s redbook jam Image Here's my pro-standard synth via CD-DA, bitches! Eat it! FUCK Image Image

An archetypally stoic and aloof yet heartful affair, the Granolabar trilogy! Image Manful fibre AND raisiny bittersweetness in a white-hot JET BOOST / PLASMA BEAMZ package! III's end sequence with
Spoiler
the flashback photos of the previous two games - the first of which was personal computer only!
sums it up nicely. Be some ~Memoire~ 3; RIP Space Lobsters, but this looks like a pretty clear-cut, three-act case of FAFO! :o Or was it? Image Granola War III's auburn sunset OST haunts on. Image

Cutting-edge SPACE STG with burning heartful motivation, ala Gate of Thunder, Axelay, and Blast Wind, that is my best jam. Image Image Image

>instant Shumps Oscar nod Image

But it must be done with convincing fire! Like this! Or this!
WARNING: Rad

Yeah boyeee  (buddy's amazin) Get some fuckin balls and save all the living things Image

...actually now I'm wondering about Grooky-kun's theory that the Space Lobsters were some kinda silicon-based life, ie, not as we know it Jim. :o Plus they're rude buggers, too! That'd be a good loophole for saving all the living things by annihilating a bunch of other things! Image

Am I unusual in preferring the Space Megaforce version of Labyrinth? The New Order original is way too disgustingly on-the-nose for me.

Such an evergreen, that OST. ;w;7 The anger and resolve in every snare hit... I'm similarly partial to the MD Kyuukyoku Tiger OST. Likewise, gives a righteous venom to the iconic Toaplan GAMUSHARA, not quite heard on the arcade OSVs.

Both are perfectly serviceable, but I can't help marking out for the SFC rev. An STG taking on The Him, now that would be legit bonerizing. I could see Metal Black or G-Darius pulling it off. This is the reason / That I came here...

Resolve, I hear. Anger, not so much. That's more in "New Say" and "Same One" with me.

Meanwhile, I share the final boss theme for Sylphia (I've personally called it "Never to Escape"): https://youtu.be/dltI5yGun1E?si=hdUBQIXOcgjOVRuU

(I still don't think it was supposed to play for the first boss Medousa. Just Tartaros/Achlys/WHATEVER the entity controlling Haides was.)

Oddly enough, the MegaDrive version is better than the original, but that's one of the few cases.

Technical question, why is the sound of the BGM of the Toaplan and NMK games so distinctive? Why do they sound different from anything else? They are instantly recognizable.

Yeah, of TAGv3's duo, I'd put Hellfire's arcade OSV well ahead of its MD arrangement. MD Zero Wing, otoh, is simply outstanding.

I prefer MD Kyuukyoku's balls-hard kick drum and roaring power chords, particularly on the definitively galloping TSUGARU, but the PCB has a classy austerity that I like nearly as much. (I seem to recall that port having some connection to Battle Mania Daiginjou, another exemplary MD Metal/Rock soundtrack... same driver, maybe?)

Pure craftsmanship and fine tweaking. MJR had the best answer:
MJR wrote: Fri Feb 10, 2023 10:11 am Funny how opinions can differ. Hellfire is one of my favourite games from Toaplan, along Truxton. I like the 2P version (for which I own the PCB), although the stage 5 chain death is quite true. But I specifically like the arcade version music best, especially Stage 2 / egyptian music. I got the PC-Engine CD version too, but I don't like it's soundtrack at all. It lacks the very specific feeling of those original programmed sounds you can only get out by torturing the sound chips. (I'm a huge chip music fan).
Can always tell a Sizzla Okamura or HIDE-KAZ work. Pristinely smooth and sullenly post-punk fiery.

I really would like to know who did the menu music for certain of Cave's xbox360-releases (Mushihimesama Futari, Muchi Muchi Pork, and Guwange come to mind), the guy (assuming all of it was composed by the same dude) is bloody brilliant, and I'd love to hear the other stuff he has composed.

I love how it sounds like the cabinet circuitry is about to explode at any moment
And I love how this track is fast but slow-charging, ascending, triumphant!
anyway I like both Sizzla Okamura and Hide-Kaz.

Oh well I'll choose another one:
U.N. Squadron (SNES): Mission 1 - Front line base
here when I try to do BGM, and I improvise something, I get something like this, or like those of Super Aleste...even if in reality I wanted to do something else :v

The character selection screen of Akai Katana goes insanely hard as well. Don't know if it's the same composer.

Not sure offhand if he worked on the Futari port, but Akai Katana's OST was by Ryu Umemoto; an immense talent, sadly gone too soon. ;-;7 AK's boss theme TSUBAZERIAI always makes me want to bust out Windows Movie Maker and cut some oldschool promos. <3 That classic fusion of bloodening feudal percussion and cutting-edge bubble-era lead breaks.

Like fellow STG titans Sakimoto & Iwata, he also did some surprisingly killer eroge OSTs for Japanese PCs. >w> Seriously mind-blowing stuff! (lower-middle of post) RESPONSER HUNGUP! would do the most hard-edged mecha or high-performance jetfighter STG proud.

---

Speaking of Hide-Kaz, while I don't like Rapid Hero's OST quite as much I'd expect with both he and Namiki's names attached, the final boss BGM is worthy of their bests. Actually reminds me more of Thunder Force IV's brooding synth-metal, specifically tracks like Evil Destroyer. That balls-hard synth lead is vintage dark fire. Image

UN Squadron - Ground Carrier. Would be cool to see someone bust out an alto sax and playing that melody. Favorite shmup soundtrack, for sure.
