Did anyone here watch Mark's video on shmups?
"Passion against reason"
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=t7RY0FHTI68&t=2800s

It was very nice to see the faces of some familiar people, Jaimers, M. Knight, Prickly Angler, Juju Kenobi and many others.

Came here to post this, I'm soon done watching it and I quite enjoy it! :) There are some points that I don't agree with, but it can also be misinterpretations from my side.

LowCasting: Dodonpachi DOJ Re: L / S mode side-by-side comparison + commentary

There's so much to like here (I mean just look at his facecam setup). I bet he's not going to sit on 3 subscribers for much longer.

Playing some Deathsmiles 1.1 lately (Switch version emulated).
Never could tackle lvl999 in arcade MBL, but in 1.1 it appears a tad easier, at least in levels (bullets are a bit less dense and a bit slower).

Interesting watch but didn't understand the chat or terminology of what was being said. But the podcast style content is an interesting idea.

Two more community-related videos:
Shmup Archetypes: The Priest and the Jester (a little essay on the shmups community mixed with some Andrei Rublev footage from Tarkovsky)
Shmup Battle: Classic Dodges ( highlight reel with two famous shmup content creators mixed with some Kendrick Lamar/MC Eiht)

Concerning the Archetypes video, I think many members of the shmup community fit into these two categories:
Spoiler
PRIEST CHARACTERISTICS:
1. Sets rules (e.g., how to behave in forums and how to play a game).
2. Endorses authority (e.g., admins and superplayers)
3. Celebrates traditions (e.g., annual shmup events & world records)
4. Seeks spirituality through sacrifice (e.g., grinding a game for years to reach a challenging goal).
5. Seeks inner peace (e.g., flow states during an extensive gaming session)
6. Acts as a role model (e.g., educating newcomers, commending others' sacrifices and achievements).
7. Eloquent self-presentation (e.g., use of avatars, signatures, and phrasings that suggest authority and reverence).
8. The ultimate tragedy of the priest is loss of belief in onsefelf and sinning. For example, cheating, which can only be resolved by confession.

JESTER CHARACTERISTICS:
1. Rebels against rules (e.g., breaking forum rules, playing games in unconventional ways).
2. Challenges authority (e.g., admins and "suspicious" superplayers)
3. Mocks traditions (e.g., an annual shmup event)
4. Seeks joy through creativity (e.g., satirical memes, funny paradoxes, and ironies).
5. Fosters community through laughter (e.g., running funny kumites)
7. Self-depracating presentation (e.g., use of avatars, signatures, and phrasings that mocks oneself).
6. The ultimate tragedy of the jester is loss of joy, such as succumbing to anger and hatred.

Ooh, verbally commented shmup and R2R? That's a rare breed, unless I've been looking in all the wrong places - sign me up.

That Priest / Jester video is something else, too. Can a Jester aspire to be a Priest? That's about where I'm at, I think

Thanks, BIL! The Alien Soldier one was a bit rough around the edges (just my second video) but I learned a lot from making it.
and thanks, Lander! Your comparison of Alien Soldier to Shinrei Jusatsushi Tarōmaru has made me interested in the latter. I have a burned copy of it so it just a matter of time. Your guide is quite inspiring.

I guess Jesters can become Priests, it's maybe what some people refer to as "growing up". :)

I thought the Alien Soldier one was quite good too, watched that earlier on. All around rather knowledgeable, though the ballin' use of free-aim Lancer had me second-guessing my grasp of the ammo mechanics :)

Interesting to see its fragmented plot from somebody else's perspective. I always took the post-A-Earth scene for a sudden swerve into mmm, defeat evil you will space mysticism - not that it needed to get more complicated!

And well, can't say enough good about Taromaru  an enviable gem to have stashed away unplayed for a rainy day. Disc burning takes me back, too - writing at 1x and praying the spare spindle didn't run dry before yielding a copy of DDP that would satisfy my Saturn's dicky read laser.

Cotton scoreplay is impressive. :o I'm normally not into milkier games, but the mechanical precision stands out; particularly the charge shot sniping, and nailing the blue gems for Barrier techniques. With the ACA release coming out of nowhere last Wednesday, I'd enjoyed reading playtesters TZW_Guile and TYR_Yeti's accounts of emulating the System 16 original's slowdown with synced 30hz autofire. Seems it's not trivial to get an optimal 30hz setup even with real hardware.

Watching Yeti surgically dismantle each stage and boss really emphasises the calibre of player they have helping out with these releases. I'd already wondered about the LVLUP connection with Psyvariar, perhaps the Barrier body-ramming's another? Image

DISASTUH, as the infamously failure-prone XEXEX sound hardware dies mid-superplay! Fortunately, a hero steps in to voice iconic Hentai Colonel KLAUS PACHIBEL! :o Image

Man Lowter3's Gradius III streams are great. Skilful and indomitable play. This game's recoveries never fail to impress and/or terrify!

Funny dude too. "Please be careful of the volume, as the uploader's death throes may be loud." Image

Co-starring G-I, hardest-working zako in the biz!

"And finally, I will personally announce this year's Best G-I. Please enjoy it till the end."

It's interesting that both Sly and Dolph would team up in The Expendables film franchise down the road after their first bout within Rocky 4.

Indeed PCEFX, much as alliances here on the farm tended to shift - for example, impetuous Goompaolo becoming our star Dick Stock agent! Image
