Lunatea's Veil is my personal favorite of the series. In fact, it's the only one that matters to me. The others are either spin-offs (Empire of Dreams, Beach Volleyball, Moonlight Museum, Dream Champ Tournament) or alternate universes/timelines (Heroes). Meanwhile, Lunatea's Veil is the only true sequel.Sumez wrote:Only played the first one, remake on Wii. Thought it was somewhat cute, but overall quite boring and lacking, with not much in the way of actual gameplay. Are the other games any better?
A better alternative to the weird PS1 era half-3D 2D platformer with a chill-out pace for me would be Tombi!

Yeah can't have stuff taking place in an alternate timeline
Re: Klonoa fans?
I read that the Wii remake toned down the difficulty a bit, despite the game not being hard in the first place.

Imma choke the wahoos out that lil bitch.

Anyone play the new ports? I've been meaning to grab them, especially to play Klonoa 2. The first game is very charming and enjoyable.

I've considered getting it. But mainly for the second game. But I still might do the first game first.
Re: Klonoa fans?
Telling from steam posts, the port of the first game has poor hit detection and the port of the second has screen tearing/frame pacing issues. I think the latter can be fixed somewhat with the video card settings, but I'm not sure if it was 100% effective.

You had five hearts, rather than 3 (like in the PSX version). In the new collection, you can pick 3 or 5.BrianC wrote:I read that the Wii remake toned down the difficulty a bit, despite the game not being hard in the first place.

After a hard session punching motherfuckers' heads off and kicking cunts through phonebooths and broiling space godfish with my 10trillion gigavolt laz0r, this is the kind of chill thread that makes me miss x93-kun.

I don't remember a ton about my only time playing these over 20 years ago, but I sure do remember Guntz being a somehow-even-lamer ripoff of Shadow the Hedgehog.
King's Field IV is the best Souls game.

Re: Klonoa fans?
Here’s a cool video that details the differences between all versions and ports of both games.

I like the fact that Phantasy Reverie exists, but I honestly don't like the look of either remake. With Door to Phantomile I suppose it's a matter of taste, but with Lunatea's Veil it's just the little details, like the lighting and the removal of the thick black outlines on character models.
I'm a really big fan of Door to Phantomile, it's one of my favorite "adventure" platformers. The sprites-on-polygons look is really well-done, and the game feels very "full" and rich with how the camera follows you down these winding alternate paths. The art direction in general is very strong, they really nailed this fabulistic dream-like ambiance even if it veers into Saturday morning cartoon territory often. Lunatea's Veil is arguably even stronger in this sense, especially towards the final levels, and both games have this streak of melancholy that makes them so unique in their genre.
Gameplay-wise I strongly prefer Phantomile over Lunatea. The pacing feels much better; Lunatea relies way too much on these "do a thing and then do it all over again" puzzle-stages, even if some of its other stages are very inspired. Even though Klonoa is not a hardcore title at all, the core mechanic of trapping and using enemies is very solid, and it gets shown off a bit in the unlockable post-game stages of both entries. I wish they had focused on that instead of the puzzle elements.
I still need to play the Gameboy/Wonderswan spin-offs, which I know are pretty different and not entirely well-received. There was a clear push from Namco to make Klonoa happen in the 2000s what with the Namco x Capcom feature and the edgy rival inclusion and the beach volleyball game (??), but he was way too late to the mascot platformer scene.

Artstyle, gameplay concepts, 2.5d environment, character design … all great.
Game, when played as an adult, very underwhelming. Seems like it’s best use case scenario, is for younger kids, transitioning from easy 2d Platformers, into 3d games.

Re: Klonoa fans?
Has anyone ever made a mod (reshade or whatever) for the collection? The game takes some big liberties with the coloring and tone. VERY bright.
I would have thought they would have made a mod in the first month, but I'm still waiting. I would find it to be THE way to play these games, but those colors
and brightness gotta be worked on.
But very good games, yes, I agree. Always had a soft spot for them, and still enjoy playing them.

Re: Klonoa fans?
I was SUPER young when I first rented Klonoa. I thought it was Sonic, was mad when I finally realized it wasn't Sonic, and then beat the game in a sitting anyway.
Maze of Memories and Kingdom of Sorrow really stick with me all of these years. I think Klonoa 2 was the third game after Super Metroid and Ocarina of Time where the term "atmosphere" started to become a thing I was consciously aware of in a video game. The older 2001 fidelity of that game made it so much more surreal and I had never heard a mascot platformer with music that could get like that at the time (of what few I played at 8 years old). Someone mentioned melancholy, I didn't experience that vibe with games that weren't deathly, upfront serious prior to Klonoa 2
EDIT: I didn't know the director of Ninja Gaiden was the director for Klonoa (and Mr Driller).
