There’s actually quite a lot of PS2 games that shipped on a CD. It was fairly common in the early days, and for smaller titles like Shikigami 2.

Since we're in fantasy land, just redraw all the sprites without the banding/artifacting. Technical qualities aside MB's visuals are by far its most defining feature - it would take some real passion to replace them adequately, and it's easy to underestimate just how artless "remade" things can end up getting if enough attention isn't paid. (Which is why I referenced Dariusburst, it's got some of that problem)

Besides the effects on gameplay? Of course not, it's a Raizing game. I don't see why it would want to be anyway, this entire genre is all about being a noticepilled observationmaxxer. Subtleties like that are what make STGs good.

Oh, from that list it looks like there were a lot more than I would have guessed. Off the top of my head, I can remember Gradius V and Skygunners. I'm sure I've seen a few more--Way of the Samurai sounds familiar now that I think about it. I didn't recall Castle Shikigami II being on CD, but that game has long since left my hands. I think I still have my JP release of Rez, which I could swear was a DVD as well. It's probably been close to a decade since I've dug out my PS2, so none of my recollections are reliable.

But re: a modern Gradius V re-release: given that we've seen M2-developed Contra and Castlevania collections from Konami in the past few years, it may not be too outlandish to hope for something similar with Gradius as well. There's the great PSP collection that runs up through IV and Gaiden (which also needs to be available on modern systems), so it would be nice to have a continuing collection with V and maybe Rebirth, since we're wishing for things. Konami seems much less invested in the legacy of Gradius than they do their other series, though.

That said, what would a REMAKE of a classic Cave title look like?
Off the top of my head the ones I'd most like to see redone are Guwange, which could sell the "painted scroll come to life" aesthetic even better, and a new Dangun Feveron that truly went all out on the disco theme.
I hadn't really considered this before, but giving Guwange's artwork a higher-resolution touch-up that went really heavy on the cel-shading/pen-and-ink aesthetic from games like Okami, Muramasa, or that one odd FromSoft ukiyo-e puzzle game on the PSP would look amazing.
