Elgato HD60 S not recognized?

Post by Sengoku Strider »

Hey, the internet is full of tons of confused people and conflicting info on this one, hoping there are people here with the experience to help sort this one out. I bought a used Elgato HD60 S, trying to use it with a 2019 MacBook Pro running Sonoma 14.5, but can't get the software to recognize the device. I get the following errors:

Elgato Capture Device Utility: No Elgato Capture device(s) found

Game Capture HD: Capture Device Not Connected (though it does specifically show the HD60 S as the only option in the drop down menu under devices)

Powering on the Elgato and video passthrough to the monitor work perfectly fine, so I'm guessing it's the video connection to the computer. I'm trying to capture regular PC Engine footage via an OSSC, nothing it shouldn't be able to handle.

Steps taken so far:
  • Game Capture & Capture Device Utility are most recent versions.
  • Permissions for camera & microphone granted under security tab in OSX settings
  • Multiple restarts of both device and laptop
  • Reinstalled both Game Capture & Capture Device Utility software
  • Reset recording location preferences
  • Hammer & Wrench under Devices in Game Capture HD is greyed out, unable to access those options
  • Was using Elgato USB C to USB 3 cable through iCan USB 3 to USB C hub, upgraded to OEM Thunderbolt 4 Pro Cable directly
  • connected
  • Tried both USB ports
  • Tried with Elgato as only USB plugged in
  • Multiple PRAM/NVRAM resets on MacBook
  • SMC reset on MacBook
Like I said, actually playing games through it works perfectly fine. At this point I've run through everything I can find, but a lot of the problems this thing has seem to be pretty esoteric. Have I still got the wrong connection with the Thunderbolt 4, or am I missing something else?

Make sure you're using the right software.

I have an elegato and there's so many different downloads out there for different software, and it was very difficult for me to find the game capture HD software compatible with my device and I kept getting the same "no capture device(s) found" note until I downloaded the right version.

looking at the HD 60 X store page, it appears there is a specific 4k capture utility linked there, but it's only compatible for windows. searching a bit more I found this page which is supposed to be for mac https://help.elgato.com/hc/en-us/articl ... ease-Notes but the link doesn't work and I don’t it will be compatible because it’s for the X model

You can try this page which has the old download links https://help.elgato.com/hc/en-us/articl ... otes-macOS

Thanks, I'm using the HD60 S, which only goes up to 1080p, rather than the X, and the software I have is their recommended one. Which is fine for me, I don't have any 4K sources to record. I tried the DL link anyway but got the same result as you, unable to access page.

I would just try different versions until you find one that works. The 2nd link is probably more appropriate tbh. Their old software is hard to find and linked on release note pages so it can take quite a bit of clicking around to find the one you need

I've tried this too. OBS Link does seem to see the HD60 S, the only thing which has so far. Unfortunately it doesn't appear in OBS itself as a selectable video capture device.

Try it on a Windows machine to see if the hardware's faulty.

I don't know if this is the case on Macs, on my windows machine, the HD60s and similar devices needed to be plugged into a USB port that was controlled by the intel or amd controller and not like a 3rd party USB controller that will get added on motherboards. Though you said you tried both USB ports so I am not sure here.

I had a similar issue, though in a slightly different situation. I was recording videos directly from my MacBook screen while reviewing online casinos, such as this one, and testing how the bonuses listed on the site actually worked. However, I ran into the problem that macOS can block recording not just from apps but also from certain websites, especially those using DRM protection or non-standard video players.

To work around this, I checked my privacy settings and granted screen recording permissions to QuickTime and OBS in "System Preferences." I also disabled hardware acceleration in my browser, which helped prevent the black screen issue during recording.

In your case with the Elgato HD60 S, it might be a similar problem. I’d recommend checking if your system recognizes the device in "System Report," trying a different USB cable or port, and running the capture software through Terminal with administrative privileges. Hopefully, one of these solutions helps.
