My pleasure, sir.MOSQUITO FIGHTER wrote:Sun Ra - Space is The Place
Killing Joke - Pandemonium (Thanks to Madsteeldarkness for Sun Ra and Killing Joke)

I would, however, recommend other Killing Joke records over Pandemonium. Their first album, What's THIS For...!, and Revelations are all quite good, and much better than later albums (IMHO). I'm not saying Pandemonium's bad, but peep their older stuff. YMMV, of course.
Today it's been:
River City Tanlines - All 7 inches Plus 2 More
D.O.A. - War on 45
Morbid Angel - Altars of Madness
Killdozer - "Lupus"/"Nasty" 7" (Yes, the flipside is a Janet Jackson cover. Hysterical...)
The Hormones - "Castaway"/"All Kindsa Girls" 7"
Storm the Tower - "Song For FM" 7"
Albert Ayler - ...in Greenwich Village
I just bought Sentenced - Frozen yesterday.
I always just downloaded music (and video games), but since I started buying original games a while ago, I might as well start buying music CDs too.
Especially since I really like Frozen, this is a CD that I'll listen to for years to come.
It's nice to have a specialty metal store in town that I can walk into and find what I'm looking for within 30 seconds. Very well-organised and unbeatable selection.
And I'm STILL listening to Rainie Yang - Meeting Love. Too cute and too pretty! So bright and happy and lovey lovey....

Racebannon - Satan's Kickin' Yr Dick In
Axolotl - Telesma
Suffocation - Despise the Sun
Hallucinator - Red Angel -- I finally know where Six Finger Satellite got their ideas for Law of Ruins!
Anata - Under a Stone With No Inscription
MC5 - Kick Out the Jams -- last two tracks kind of lose the plot, but damn.

Quality. Just ordered the first album and What's THIS for. Think I do dig their punk (post punk? I dunno) sound more. Pandemonium does come off as uneven after repeat listenings. Still like Black Moon, Jana, and Labrynth really well. Rest of the album is pretty lame.MadSteelDarkness wrote:My pleasure, sir.MOSQUITO FIGHTER wrote:Sun Ra - Space is The Place

It's terrible, one of my fave albums at the moment is on my own label, one Geoff Mullen (he's got a couple reviews in this months issue of the wire), but the CD I'm putting out by him ('The air in pieces') keeps haunting me, and while not initially on my top list (my own releases never are), this one forces me to keep listening to it.
Otherwise it has been a lot of classical, metal and free improv (hats off to all you Sun Ra fans...)
Dragon Force's Inhuman Rage will immediately lose me all credit, but its so stupidly fun that one can't help enjoy it. That and all the In Flames CDs were selling at Newberry for $10. Jesus... And what's up with Amon Amarth??? Barbarians are cool!
Bach remains in my top fuckin' 5 list, while I'm still mucking around with the 20th century (Shostakovich, Villa-lobos) Will Bruckner (19th century) ever stop amazing me?
In the free improv world I've been digging through the Emanem catalog with some nice Evan Parker reissues and the past glories of the Spontaneous Music Ensemble/Orchestra.
Just bought the This Heat set (stupidly) only to realize what I already (consciously) knew that I basically own everything worth owning on this set (the first two albums); so if someone else is in need (Madsteeldarkness?) let me know. How the hell did these people go from bands like Quiet Sun to This Heat???!!!

Yeah, I also wish I hadn't. The live stuff is really unnecessary. The only ones I want(ed) are Deceit and Health & Efficiency. Was hoping to be surprised by the rest. They got my first initial wrong on the minidisc too.CMoon wrote: Just bought the This Heat set (stupidly) only to realize what I already (consciously) knew that I basically own everything worth owning on this set (the first two albums); so if someone else is in need (Madsteeldarkness?) let me know. I...
I...
*sigh*
I don't own any This Heat. *ducks*
I know. I know. Those first two albums have been on my list of stuff to get for, I dunno, forever. There's that hole in my collection sitting there...mocking me, but have I done anything to fill it? Nope.

I will immediately turn in my gun and record geek badge.
Excellent. The Locust - Safely Second Body Last
Dead Kennedy’s - Fresh Fruit For Rotting Vegetables (Gonna steal your mail!)
Heh. This was one of my favorite records in high school. I wonder where my copy ended up. I haven't seen it in...fifteen years? Speaking of which, I just dug up an ancient 7" from Fearless Iranians From Hell. I must have scrawled their logo/symbol on a dozen notebook covers.Corrosion of Conformity - Technocracy
Also:
Aus-Rotten - Fuck Nazi Sympathy 7"
BLBAF - Home of the Brahma Chopp
Black Moon - Buck 'Em Down/Murder MC's 12"
Monk and Canatella - Fly Fishing EP
The Dictators - Manifest Destiny
and last but not least:
The Sword - Age of Winters.
This CD keeps finding its' way into my players. They're local boys with a deep love of Sabbath and Budgie. Super-catchy stuff, and well worth a listen.
This Heat box on eBay, they seem to be doing well. Should dump it while the reviews are still fresh. Hah.
Avril Lavigne - Under My Skin -- I raise your Dragonforce. Been enjoying this for months, but it's finally clicked more as an album. I think most pop acts will be lucky to have a greatest hits half as good. Have I said too much?
Electric Wizard - Come My Fanatics
Exhumed - Slaughtercult

I appreciate your comments on the This Heat box...I'm hoping I can just sell my original cds (since the box is rather nice, though completely superflous).Rob wrote:This Heat box on eBay, they seem to be doing well. Should dump it while the reviews are still fresh. Hah.

Damn, I need to get into electric wizard at some point.
Anyone heard Candlemass? (I haven't...)
Yeah, I've heard the first two and the last self-titled one from '05. I think people make a big deal about the vocalist that joined after Epicus Doomicus Metallicus, but I don't get it. That one is my favorite and I think the best classic doom metal album. Nightfall isn't as good, s/t is surprisingly good. So I haven't heard anything bad from them.CMoon wrote: Anyone heard Candlemass? (I haven't...)
More doom for me:
Ocean - Here Where Nothing Grows -- Took a relisten weeks later, great.
Rachel Sweet - Fool Around -- Weird new wave-ish album with country vocals. Some really catchy songs like "Who Does Lisa Like."
As far as Davis, I find myself mostly favoring Dark Magus and Get Up With It.Neon wrote: Miles Davis - Miles Smiles
I've yet to check out those box sets of Bitches Brew and In a Silent Way, but my friends that have say the extra sessions are deeply rewarding.
Awwwww. Give yourself more time. Most people stop really hearing music after high school. What they liked then is what they will always like, rarely striking out a yard from their first ruminations. If you keep trying to hear new music, your tastes will grow. There really isn't 'good taste' and 'bad taste', just people who haven't heard much and those who have.My taste still sucks
I know you didn't ask me, but having spoken a bit with Madsteel I think we're in similar places as life-long collectors, and can say safely after 2000 albums or so I stopped counting, and wouldn't be surprised if his attitude is the same.Madsteel, have you ever counted how much music you own, in total

I love that record to death. If you haven't yet, peep ESP and Nefertiti. I don't think you'll be disappointed.Miles Davis - Miles Smiles
Again, what CMoon said. I would also add: Be true to yourself. Who cares what other people say about what you like. If you dig something, then you dig it. Do so proudly and without apology. My taste still sucks
Yes. Also: On the CornerAs far as Davis, I find myself mostly favoring Dark Magus and Get Up With It.

Jeepers, now that I've derailed the thread, back on track:
Duke Ellington (with Charles Mingus and Max Roach) - Money Jungle
AMM - AMMMusic - 1966
Ol' Dirty Bastard - Return to the 36 Chambers: The Dirty Version
The Dirtbombs vs. King Khan and his Shrines - Billiards at Nine-Thirty
Dixie Witch - One Bird, Two Stones
Red Snapper - Reeled and Skinned
Is there any love here for the New Zealand underground? (some of which is not so underground):
Pin Group
Terminals
Dead C
Roy Montgomery
The Renderers
This Kind of Punishment
Sandoz Lab Technicians
Flies Inside the Sun
Wreck Small Speakers on Expensive Stereos
Alastair Galbraith
White Winged Moth
Peter Jefferies
and yes, even The Clean... (not underground)
Of course, I'd also like to add these recent additions:
Pumice
Antony Milton (many projects)
Clayton Noone (Armpit, Futurians, CJA)
Hoorah for New Zealand!

Hm, I've heard Dead C (Harsh 70s Reality), This Kind of Punishment and Alastair Galbraith (Morse and Gaudylight) and a Pumice track on some great mix I have. Not much love yet (:o), but I have a few others on my wishlist, like Sandoz Lab Technicians.CMoon wrote:Is there any love here for the New Zealand underground? (some of which is not so underground):
Not a huge fan of Dead C myself (though Trapdoor fucking exit remains a bit of a favorite). As far as Galbraith, you should check out his newer ones (Mirrorwork, Cry, Radiant.) Also, This kind of Punishment--not sure what you've heard, but Beard of Bees is absolutely stunning.Rob wrote:Hm, I've heard Dead C (Harsh 70s Reality), This Kind of Punishment and Alastair Galbraith (Morse and Gaudylight) and a Pumice track on some great mix I have. I've released a Pumice album (as has Soft Abuse), and I love his work. He's actually in the states now and will giving a couple shows in Providence at the end of the week.
It's funny you mention Sandoz. I have a master by them sitting here I'll be putting out later this year.
Weird, never mentioned Birchville Cat Motel. What an absurd oversight on my part.
Just discovered yesterday that my workplace is about 2 blocks away from a giant HMV.
So I picked up Opeth - My Arms, Your Hearse, and Dissection - Storm of the Light's Bane (2CD re-release)
Pleasantly surprised with Dissection, I took a risk with it since I've never heard any of their stuff before, but it was on sale.

I heard Shostakovich for the first time the other night when his Symphony no.5 was performed at the proms. I love the eerie melancholy of it, so I'm going to pick up the CD of that one. Any idea what other work by him I should keep an ear out for?CMoon wrote:Bach remains in my top fuckin' 5 list, while I'm still mucking around with the 20th century (Shostakovich, Villa-lobos)

Thanks for beating me to the punch on that. The 11th is really good, but truly, you are safe with most of his symphones. The 15th is strange though and I don't recommend it, while his I seem to recall one or two of his early symphonies being seemingly throw-away.professor ganson wrote:I believe the 11th Symphony is my favorite by him, but it pales next to Stravinsky's best, i.e. Agon.Daigohji wrote: Any idea what other work by him I should keep an ear out for?
That said, although I love his symphonies, its his string quartets which are truly out-of-control, but they aren't easy listening.
I don't know if I'd want to have to chose between shostakovich and stravinsky. Both are absolutely essential, and both have really strong (and weak) points.
