Extron VSC 500/700 screen tearing

Post by Gunstar »

I've been wanting to pick up a VSC unit for 480i output (not sure if the OSSC Pro will get similar flicker settings) but have seen a few reports of screen tearing online and I was wondering why some people don't have this issue and some do, is it the case of using a particular firmware perhaps?

There's no frame lock. With a proper scan converter that only outputs standard NTSC or PAL, frame rate conversion is necessary. I don't recall getting any tearing, but it's certainly possible. I only see dropped and repeated frames. The pacing will rarely be perfectly smooth, because there's no frame lock.

AFAIK, the firmware on the Extron scan converters isn't upgradable.

I suppose we could ask marqs for interlaced output modes with frame lock on the OSSC Pro, but it might have limited compatibility with a few consumer CRTs.
We apologise for the inconvenience

There's an Extron DVD (two of them actually - my buddy gave me another to upload as well) I uploaded to Archive.org which has "Extron VSC 700 - Firmware - VSC500700FW_v4x03.exe" on it - so I assume it's upgradable (or at least able to put the same/stock firmware on it, if it has some issues or something).

Thank you for that explanation. No frame lock would explain it, so input would need to match 59.94 to avoid tearing. I'll probably grab a VSC and wait to see how OSSC Pro matures on the 480i output side of things. Appreciate it.

@Dochartaigh Good to know!
