PC Engine controller to Turbo Grafx adapter/cable ?

Post by brianon »

Guys,

I've a PC Engine controller I'd love to use on my Turbo Grafx. I could possibly make my own but my soldering skills are awful.

Anybody know if such a cable exists and where (ideally in europe) to get one ?

Back in 1992-1993, TTI (Turbo Technologies Incorporated) sold such an Turbo Duo to TG-16 controller adapter due to the use of a "mini 8-Din plug" style interface with the PC Engine/Turbo Duo controllers (whereas with a TG-16 console setup, it uses the more larger standard-sized "8-Din styled interface plug" layout) on a TG-16 console setup. When Turbo Zone Direct bought all the remaining TTI inventory stock in 1994-1995, they sold the Duo to TG-16 controller adapter brand new. I bought one from TZD and it works like a charm.

Later on, I had a fellow shmupper make me a custom TG-16 to Duo controller adapter so that I may use all my TG-16 gaming controller accessories on the Turbo Duo & PC Engine Duo-RX consoles with ease. This particular custom TG-16 to PCE controller adapter works equally just as good as well.

You might get lucky as I've seen such an official NEC Duo to TG-16 controller adapter for sale on eBay from time to time.

Thanks. I'll keep an eye on ebay.

I've bought some mini din 8 din female and regular 8 din male connectors. Gonna give making one a shot.

Here's an eBay auction listing for a custom made PC Engine to TG-16 controller adapter cable:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Duo-Core-Grafx- ... 3a90117e93 (I.E. -- Using an optional Hori Fighting Stick PC {with 6-button configuration} on a TG-16 console is feasible.)

and same eBay seller listed above, also, makes a custom TurboGrafx-16 to PC Engine controller adapter cable:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Turbo-grafx-16- ... 3a957f2fcb (I.E. -- Using an optional NEC TG-16 Turbo Stick joystick on a Turbo Duo or PC Engine Duo/Duo-R/Duo-RX is feasible). TTI never did make/sell a Turbo Duo themed Turbo Stick joystick though.

Read on the pcenginefx forum that someone said you can swap cables between controllers without soldering. You could try to swap cables between a turbo and the pcengine controller till you find a convertor cable.

Yes, I realize this is an 11 year necro-bump but I've yet to see credible evidence to this.

Granted, that doesn't eliminate the possibility that you couldn't just swap JST connections for a PCE cable to the TG16 or vice versa. I assume the wiring isn't 1-1.

Anyone able to confirm/deny this?

PCE and TG16 controllers should be electrically the same:

I don't think Monoprice sells that cable anymore though, so you'd have to look for one elsewhere (console5 or Aliexpress maybe).

I have the feeling that a PCE tap (and PCE controllers for that matter) is more common than the TG16 one though, I have several that I picked up for a few hundred yen each. Pretty sure it can be similarly modded to be used on a TG16.

There's also these, a bit cheaper but they're out of stock:

https://console5.com/store/turbografx-t ... cable.html

And I assume this cable can be used inside a PCE pad:

The www.controlleradapter.com site sells the PCE to TG-16 controller adapters as well. The Retro Frog PCE to TG-16 adapter works like a charm as it doesn't take up too much real-estate, space-wise.

Of course, it's more common to find a PCE multi tap than it is to find a TG-16 multi tap (I have both and it's nice to be able to "mix 'n' match" various PCE & TG-16 gamepads and arcade sticks to your liking. Both the Hori "Fighting Stick PC" and Micomsoft "XE-1 Pro HE" are top-tier world-class dedicated PCE arcade sticks through and through -- tis a shame that they were sold/made for the PCE gaming community (meaning Japan and not stateside). The 1st-party NEC Turbo Stick for the TurboGrafx-16 console is another awesome arcade stick worth playing/owning as well.
