The Hills Have Eyes (1977) - 8/10
Saw the rather well done remake over a decade ago, finally got around to watching the original, which is also great. Not a dull moment, and was surprised to see they gave a dog a starring role.

Three thousand years of longing - 8.5/10
I've only seen Miller's Madmax films, but he just seems to be an all around fantastic director. Really looking forward to watching everything else he has done, including Happy Feet, fuck it, and maybe even that pig film.

The Girl Who Leapt Through Time - 7.5/10
What a charming film and a lot better than I expected, but that was probably because I mistook the director for the dude that made that cheesy teeny bullshit Your Name; Mamoru Hosoda actually did Summer Wars, which was pretty cool as well! Great animation, perfect sweet spot between more modern fluid animation and the overproduced stuff that goes for anime nowadays. SImple story, good characters (and voice acting!), bittersweet ending.

Godzilla Minus One

Everyone's been shitting their pants over this. Almost went to see it in Japan a month or so ago, but never got around to it as it was only on a handful of screens by then. Anyway, Shin Godzilla got some pretty good reviews, despite it being somewhere between a 3 and a 4, so I was weary going in. I can forgive, but never forget. To my delight, this was very entertaining. Not perfect, but for a modern day Japanese monster / drama flick, it really holds up. Most of my irks are w/ the writing and the acting that follows, and of course, some of the elements at the end. Nonetheless, I enjoyed it. Postwar Ginza was fucking incredible, and they went with a color palette reminiscent of the times.

I was thoroughly entertained the whole way through the movie. Kuranosuke Sasaki really made it amazing. Ryunosuke Kamiki hammed up the sad boi role way too much, but I was willing to forgive him because it was just so action packed and the suspense was great.

It's not a perfect movie, but it's way better than a Godzilla movie in 2023 has any right to be.

I like movies which had a lotta no namers, about a teen cinephile getting a job at a movie rental store.
brigsby bear about a guy who grew up in a bunker having watched only one tv show and the challenges he faces when he eventually leaves the bunker.

both were comedies that dealt with some pretty intense emotional situations, but overall I enjoyed brigsby bear more as it was more lighthearted overall and the protagonist made it more enjoyable.

I also felt like buying a couple criterion last night, and ended up grabbing crumb (terry zwigoff) and miller's crossing (coen flick I've already seen a few times). I grabbed the latter in the mood for another coen since I finally rewatched the big lebowski for the first time in 10 years, since I burned myself out on it in grade school when we'd throw it on every night while playing warhammer 40k. I've probably seen it front to back a few dozen times, and way more passively, but I still knew 80% of it word for word. the game "harold halibut" put me in the mood for it since there was a lebowski reference, and I really enjoyed revisiting it.

on a side note, they're showing the newest jacques audiard at cannes in the new few days, and I'm blown away by the path he's taking as a filmmaker. the new one, emilia perez, a musical crime comedy starring karla sofia gascon, selena gomez, zoe saldana, and edgard ramirez. should be pretty dang cool!

my current fav audiard are a prophet, the sisters brothers, and the beat that my heart skipped (crazy to think it's been 10 years since rapoon recommended it in this thread)

nowhere yet, it's not even available for purchase. MB does have showtimes today and tomorrow around 4PM tho.

it's almost as unavailable as the new (2023) michel gondry, "the book of solutions" although I still haven't figured out a way to watch that. the available digital and physical formats don't have an option for english subtitles and right now it's near impossible to watch. I imagine soon it'll be like microbe and gasoline where I can buy the dvd and then dump it to bypass the region locking.

This Happy Gilmore 2 announcement has me wary. How can you improve on the perfect movie? You can't. This is one I kind of wish stayed untouched. Just imagine a 75 year old Adam Sandler still yelling at a golf ball. It only brings to mind the imminent inevitable onset of death. The frail transient nature of the mere flesh we all find ourselves imprisoned in.

.... remember I'm ok with most of the necrophilia going on! Including Ghostbusters. (And actually would have cared about them finally trying something with The Destroyer again. Eleven years ago. Remo Williams wasn't the best execution of the source material, so it could be an improvement.)

Man On A Swing - 1974 - Frank Perry



Pretty solid mystery thriller with Cliff Robertson as the police chief investigating the murder of a young woman, and Joel Grey as the enigmatic, so-professed "clairvoyant" who invites himself to assist the police chief to solve the case. The clairvoyant seems to know to every detail about the murder, so is he really psychic or did he commit the murder himself?

I'm a big Frank Perry fan so there's enough for me to like here, especially Grey's performance (you'd remember him as the MC in Cabaret) . Watched on Blu-Ray

One hour and seven minutes of rust, sweat, and unspeakable substances, by way of abstract japanese horror. Tetsuo follows the story of a salaryman, who - folowing a hit-and-run incident - begins to experience inexplicable waking nightmares of sexual metallic gore.

Rough, sharp edged, and a real trove of horror devices; if you have buttons to push, it'll probably find some way or other to do it!

Monochrome was a good choice, and obviously intentional given the release year; granted the film's effects more margin to work with, which was put to good use.
Convincingly freaky, though it pendulums between retroactively funny (possibly because I am a child and engage in local shitposting on a semiregular basis,) and genuinely unsettling. Definitely one that'd fuck you up Shigesato Itoi-style if you were to accidentally walk into it as a young'un!

Had me wondering whether I was getting Silent Hill'd at a couple of points; being that it's abstract, short, and dialogue-light, I can't really dig much deeper without spoilers.

So here we go...

Salary Man and Girlfriend are pretty horrible people, relative to the protagonist framing! Dumping the HNR victim in a ditch and then engaging in CRIME FUCK while he brokenly watches on, nasty! Solid motivator for a well-trodden revenge tale.

And well, it seems this thesis is one of familiar components; the mentioned revenge, by way of (familiarly Japanese) miraculous actualization of individual will.

What would happen if - at the nadir of their iniquity and hatred - you gave an already-twisted individual the power to alter reality around their own perversions, and ultimately victimize in turn those who wronged them?

So not so much a Silent Hill psychobreak brought on by guilt, as a mechanization of the classical angry ghost formula I suppose. Not that I could say for sure, since I've thus far been too chicken to indulge in any classic japanese ghost movies

And of course, revenge is in and of itself consumptive. Though that could be taken a few ways, with the way things ultimately work out.
Was the Fetishist absorbed and reborn within his own sick creation, or did he ultimately dominate Salary Man, claiming victory alongside a metallic new world?

Rather interesting, I thought, that he's credited as Fetishist; though that's going off the subtitle.
A very direct presentation of the character intent, if you will, perhaps intended to spotlight the depths of fucked-upness the film exploits for its horror.

Worthy of a watch, and also of a listen; the soundtrack is fantastic, as established by the exchange that inspired this viewing.
Even better in isolation, I'd say, as the film has other audiovisual elements to juggle during the best parts, and doesn't end up featuring the music as prominently as it might deserve.

I was hoping [N]ew [W]orld was posed in a literal post-humanity kind of sense, and there it was. Cracking bit of existential horror, though I wish it had lasted longer and delved deeper into the alien landscape.

The finale was wild - Your right arm comes off? returns! Dredging up this stanky deep-cut from the kusoge memory archive in the process. Yech! Can't believe I bought that shit before the PS2 I played it on

The climactic monster fusion sequence was a real masterclass of practical effects work - outstandingly 'orrible, ambitious, and with some interesting I Have No Mouth touches to boot.

And well, it certainly went off some sort of deep end once [M]e[G]atron started playing, but with such aplomb! It's nonsense, but we're already so far gone into fuckedville that the nonsense stands.

Not only does it stand, it hoons brazenly around suburban japan with speed lines, waving twelve feet of white-hot male-male interface cable in its wake!

Speaking of burger, the takeaway guy loaded up my movie night chips with crispy onions by accident, and even rang up to apologize! EXTRA IRON CONTENT for IRON FILM VIEW

Kwaidan - 1964 - Masaki Kobayashi (Japan)





Kobayashi was already in my Top 5 visual directors after seeing Hara Kiri and Samurai Rebellion, but his color debut Kwaidan might even clinch a Top 3 nod. It's over three hours long but it's four separate ghost stories, so you could take an intermission if you want. I can't show you enough images from this, lol, it's definitely a high artistic watermark. The stories, acting, and everything else are great too, but the visuals is where I'd sell this. Watched on Max (just recently added there I think)

I had to rewatch this recently after my sister-in-law posted on our WhatsApp about a recent oncall incident she had at in her job that reminded me of the scene where Captain Culpepper's wife and daughter were arguing over two different phone handsets placed next to each other on his desk. I had always assumed I had reviewed this one at some point, but a search turned up nothing.

Classic 1963 film with a whopping $9.4 million budget (equivalent to $95 million today) that was basically the Avengers of 1950s and 1960s comedy. Except that the Avengers are the bad guys and they all hate each other. And the good guys become bad guys. And basically everyone ends up turning into a greedy bastard. But maybe the real briefcase full of money was all the enemies we made along the way?

Four motorists come upon a car accident on a desert road in California where a notorious criminal tells them where he hid a briefcase with $350,000 in a park 200 miles away just before (literally) kicking the bucket. The ensuing race to get there first picks up several more equally despicable contestants along the way, and highly destructive hijinks ensue. The standout performances come from Ethel Merman as the Mother-in-law from Hell, and Jonathan Winters as a rather unhinged truck driver who famously destroys a service station singlehandedly. There's a lot of filler between the setpieces though, and the film had to be edited down a number of times to get it to a manageable length (Stanley Kramer's original cut was close to 3 1/2 hours, the version that's most common now clocks in at around 2:40, but at least they had the courtesy to include an intermission in the theatrical release.)

Worth watching for all the great practical effects work and stunts, but there's a lot you can fast forward through too. Currently available on YouTube to watch for free:

I have an irrational love of Disney's Midnight Madness starring Marty McFly and the Dr. Pepper Werewolf (David Naughton), which is basically the same premise as IAMMMW. Oh, and a Pee-Wee Herman cameo in an arcade. Maybe it's the chicks above though in their shorts. It's tedious, annoying, yet somewhat very watchable.
