Shmup levels in non-shmup games

Post by Shatterhand »

This thread used to exist in the older forum, but I can't find it here.

So, what non-shmuo games have shmup on them?

I just remembered that becaus I am playing Pacman World 20th Anniversary (The 1st one), and it has a very cool shmup level called "King Galaxian".

The two shmup stages in Keio Yuugekitai: Katsugekihen are great, but then its predecessor was a proper shmup anyway.

The ones in Astro Boy: Omega Factor are also pretty cool. Great game, although it's slightly over-ambitious like every Treasure game.

In Wonderboy III: Monster Lair, every second half of a level is a shmup stage.

And who could forget the shmup stages in Turrican II?

Gunstar Heroes, Dynamite Headdy, and Rocket Knight Adventures, my three favorite Genesis games, all have shmup levels in them.

Coincidence? I never really noticed it before...hmm....

I love Wonderboy III, too. Great subject, now I am going to go try out some of these games!

Game Boy's Super Mario Land has a few (one in a submarine, one in an aeroplane).
No matter how good a game is, somebody will always hate it. No matter how bad a game is, somebody will always love it.

Xexyz on NES has a few shmup levels, as well as some shmup-level boss fights.

That part of the stage is sooooo damn good it could be a game in itself. The first time I played it I was just amazed.

Kirby and the Amazing Mirror, the GB b/w Batman, Konami Wai Wai World 1, Konami Wai Wai World 2, Wario Ware, Dynamite Headdy, and the original Kirby's Dreamland have shmup levels. A couple of the Goemon games have levels of classic shmups and Goemon 4 SNES has a hidden udapted Time Pilot.

I'm trying to figure out which part of the game you have in mind. Probably I haven't gotten to it yet. There is, if I'm not mistaken, a section where you are moving downward in water. But presumably this isn't what you're talking about.

I believe he's referring to Mission 5. Without giving too much away, the level starts like a horizontal shooter and later turns into a vertical shooter.

Mission 3 in Metal Slug X was shmuppy towards the end.

You guys forgot to mention Jim Power.
I also always considered the second stage in Altered Beast to be kinda "shmupy". (when you power up into a flying dragon shooting electricity)

I think you got Kirby's Dreamland GB b/w confused with Kirby's Adventure NES. The final boss in the original Kirby's Dreamland is not a shmup boss. Kirby's Dreamland, the one I mentioned in a previous post, the one without the special powers from enemies, does have a shmup level, though.

There was a third shooter stage that was cut from the game. ;)

This is kind of an Isometric "you face the screen and stuff comes at you" kind of shmup but I will mention it. The bonus stages in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2: Battle Nexus for PS2, you basically shoot stuff while dodging tons of obstacles and collect Shell Coins.

Superman's side stages come to mind, but they suck.

Oh, and who could forget Zone of Enders 2: The 2nd Runner's ZORADIUS...Vic Viper is Awesome in that game!
The world would be a better place if there were less shooters and more dot-eaters.

Don't forget Mega Man 8. It has two shmupping segments. One in Tengu Man's level, and the other in Dr. Wily's castle.
