Hello everyone! Im new here.

Post by grahf »

Ive stumbled across this site a few times, and finally got around to registering.
A little introduction: I was first introduced to games by the Atari 2600 at a friends house. First system i owned was the NES. To be honest i never realy enjoyed shooters when i was younger. I think they were just to hard for me, so i never gave them a shot (pun). I do remember enjoying twinbee on the NES though, even though i coudnt get past the 2nd level :D Einhander on the Playstation was the first shooter i bought since the NES and i enjoyed it a bit, but soon gave it up since it seemed impossible.

Now fast forward to a few months ago when i picked up a Duo-R. I originally bought it for Dracula X, but soon was exposed to the many great shooters on the system. Lords of Thunder being the first one i actually started to enjoy, and its grown from there. Ive been playing R-type, Gate of Thunder, Soldier Blade, Super Star Soldier, Ninja Spirit (i consider it a shooter :D ), PC Denjin (Air Zonk), Dragon Spirit, etc.

The most recent additions have been the original Gradius (trying to beat this currently), and Gradius II. I plan on picking up Salamander next. Sorry for the long post, just wanted to say hi.

Hi there, welcome aboard, from the gist of your post it looks like the "old school" shmuppers around here will be particularly happy to have you. :) I personally am more familiar with more recent stuff, but I'm slowly working on diversifying without breaking the bank, heh heh. Enjoy your stay!

It's been hard for me not to break the bank during the time I've been on this forum... :)

Call it lack of self-control or whatever, but I haven't been this into games for a long while, and that can't be a bad thing. Welcome!

Welcome! And don't give up on Einhander - I don't believe it's impossible. I myself haven't conquered it yet, but it does have a fairly even difficulty curve, so keep on trying!

I'm relatively new to posting here too, but welcome nonetheless! There's a lot of information scattered all over this site, so it's great if you have a question. Later!

HIJACK!

I just registered today as well. Might as well post my hellos in here instead of making another thread, huh? :)

I'm mostly into the newer stuff. The more bullets, the better. I'd also like to create my own shmup eventually, a goal which is really not that far out of reach if I just stopped playing shmups (and other games) so much. :)

Welcome grahf and Doozer! BTW watch out because I'm a creep.

For example:
Middlemoor, I am beginning to suspect you aren't Chinese. In which case I'm not that interested in your sister anymore.

Interesting that you got into shooters from the Duo. I'm not a long-time fan either but Dreamcast was the one that did it for me. And after a brief period of massive pirating every shooter I came across, now I'm breaking the bank replacing them with originals...

Hello to both of you!
Good idea to start Salamander, that's one little - slightly underrated - gem.
Alas, Ikaruga is going...

Undesired, unwanted them...
What makes them go?

Hi everyone, hope you don't mind me hijacking this thread too, but I'm also new and a big PCE fan. I recently decided to rebuild my PCE and Saturn collections as I'd sold most of them off over the years much to my current regret (why o why did I sell my Radiant Silvergun!?). After picking up Soldier Blade and Spriggan I realized how much I missed shooters; then I stumbled onto this site. :) This time around I'm going to focus on shmups since I'm getting bored with a lot of other genres and I didn't concentrate much on them before.

Seems like a bunch of pretty decent folks here. No problem with the hijacks fellas, welcome to you too.
Rolins, i recognise you from the PCEngineFX forums. Greetings.

I didnt realise there was so many awesome shooters for saturn. I have a region modded Saturn that has been waiting to be sold, but i may pick up a few games for it instead of letting it go.

Im more of an oldskool gamer myself. Ive been playing mainly my Duo-R, TurboExpress and a little SNES over the last few months.

Fuck it, I'll just say my piece here too.

I've actually been dropping by this forum thing from time to time for 2-3 years. Never registered 'cause all I could really talk about with any brainpower was anything gradius-ish on a console. That frikkin' game must be the most common thing everybody's sick of talkin' about here, so I never wanted to play the part of the "stooopid" American who missed the Jpn Dreamcast, Saturn, Jpn PS2, and Genesis opportunities....which I did. I registered finally 'cause the only contribution I could think of for said community was to hand out ringtones.

I'm passively interested if I ever find another person in the real life who likes these games...who isn't...you know....crazy-weird.

In the meantime, I found the high score lists that seem to be not broken. I've set out to use my collection to bring down tviks in something, somewhere....then I got robbed...then partially unrobbed, and then when I set up the entertainment center again it's gonna be me, a 12-pack of Labatt, 4-6 loops, and some maaaaad carpal tunnel.

Anyway, hello, welcome, I'm done talking, and all that

Counter-hijack! Good to see a forum that doesn't devour newbies.

At last count I've got about 250 games (all originals) across eight systems, but only a handful of those are shmups. RPGs were my main poison for years, but there's only so many times you can grind stats to save the world before you just want to blow s**t up. I've been importing games from the US for years, but I've just got my first shipment of Japanese games. Of those, Ibara is currently at the top of my play list (I'm saving ESPgaluda and Radirgy for my birthday in a couple of weeks).

I'm currently also playing Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike (PS2), Quake IV (PC), New Super Mario Bros. (DS) and Dreamfall: The Longest Journey (PC), which should give you an idea of my odd gaming habits.

I used to be a huge RPG fan, but i dont have the time anymore to dedicate to them.. unfortunatly.
Shooters are just so infuriating and fun at the same time. There is just something cool about blasting away at boss, and having parts fall off and/or explode. Ahhh satisfying.

Well it seems like everyone new is posting here so I will too.

Longtime lurker, I've been collecting and playing Saturn shmups for about 2 years now but it was really on the backburner. I just bought an old PS2 and set it up w/ the HD Loader and I've got ESPGaluda and Ibara in the mail as we speak (excited!).

I look forward to getting to know everyone and having some heated shmup discussions!

Wow, that's a lot of newbies coming out all of a sudden!

grahf, highly recommended that you keep the Saturn around, especially since it's already region modded. If you ever decide to pick up a JP Saturn shooter, you'll be able to fire it up as soon as you get it at no extra cost.

Welcome everyone else. zjd you're in for a treat with galuda, and one Hell of a beating with Ibara.

I actually picked up the saturn at a fleamarket for $25 about 4 years ago. I then bought the sega brand movie card on ebay for $30, and used the saturn for about 2 years to watch VCDs on. I kinda HAD to mod it to use the VCD card :D I never really even looked into saturn games until finding this site.

You know, some forums have a stickied thread which is called something like INTRODUCE YOURSELF and goes for pages and pages and pages.

The idea is that whoever registers can post their hellos and game bios in that thread, so as to avoid a gazillion individual hello threads.

The advantage of that approach is that all the hellos are not lost after they fall off the end of the first page. Users can go back to that one thread and find out a little something about everyone else in the forum. It's an interesting, nostalgic thread. It's useful.

I am not saying that having a gazillion one-serving hello threads is bad. It's just a different approach. It's more ephemeral... um,... more poetic. Yeah. Whatever.

Also, hello guys.

Another welcome to all new guys, sorry after the fourth newcomer entered the thread I start to get confused by all your nicks. :P

I like the classic shmups and manic ones alike, i have no absolute preference. Nice thing that this community is pretty mixed so you read a lot of different opinions. :)

@icycalm:
But i think the plot of these unsticked "hello" threads is that the new users get some feedback of the community. In comparison to those sticked threads. They can feel more comfortable and it is a good way to get introduced to the forums and feel like starting in other threads. That's at least my opinion about it. :)
