Most over-the-top shooter?

Post by jpolz »

OK, I'm looking for opinions on the most over-the-top shooter....

I'm talking biggest explosions, nastiest bosses, the most rediculous weaponry, not necessarily the most difficult, just something that screams excess, but yet still fun.

as far as weaponry at least Batsugun is a definite, and Blazing Lazers gets an old-school nod.

Yay for insane firepower! (Batsugun)

Either of the Giga Wing games could qualify in terms of loads o' bullets, big explosions, super-overdone bomb effects and the like, not to mention that your character yells a lot in the Japanese versions...haven't played Generations, but I doubt it tones itself down too much, heh.

I might also add Armed Police Batrider to the list, though not to as much an extent as the stuff already mentioned.

The most over-the-top announcer is the one in Dimahoo / Great Mahou Daisakusen. That guy is nuts!

I would have to second Giga Wing 2. Pretty over the top in presentation and its scoring system.

Batsugun has fantastically over-the-bloody-top firepower and the bombs in Gigawing 2 are a pyronamic wonder whilst Psyvariar 2 and Ikaruga have the best boss explosions
IMO of course.
Ikaruga review now up in PLASMA BLOSSOM

I was going to post an image of Ultra Mode in Mushihime Sama. You can't see anything but purple plasma. Bizarrely, every single link to an image on click-stick's site is broken. Download one of the videos, if they're still up:

Is it just me or does it sound like the same guy did Wolverine's voice in the Capcom fighting games. Every time I hear "Warning! Warning! Here comes the strong one" I think of Wolverine saying berserker barrage.

Back on topic, you might want to check out Dangun Feveron. I think it has that crazy over the top vibe you're thinking of.

The more weapons the better, I say....I'm all for tons of firepower....I'm sooo playing Batsugun!
The world would be a better place if there were less shooters and more dot-eaters.

I know it technically doesn't count, but Operation Carnage. There are millions of enemies on screen and the bosses all have a ton of forms and just keep getting bigger and unleashing more devastating attacks.

It's easily the most over-the-top game I've ever played. Ever.

In general, Compile games are known for their fun gameplay and over the top weaponry, even with some of their earlier games like Zanac. Zanac is very over the top in terms of weapons for a game from 1986.

Project S-11 has some very over the top weapons for a GBC game, especially the flamethrower weapon. I think Paragon 5 was definatly inspired by Compile and Toaplan.

Truxton and Fire Shark have some over the top weapons, though they take a while to get to that point. Truxton is very intense in firepower for an older shooter and it's still an extremely hard game, even with the difficulty toned down.

Heh, I'll avoid saying anything for ph33r of the blue mod edit...other than I disagree

I'd have to agree on Batsugun. Beltiana's leveled-up shot cannot be beat (twirly thing up the middle). Excellent game as well.

Donpachi deserves a mention as well. The announcer is so corny but funny...only Street Fighter Alpha 3 has a better announcer.

In case you want to know, the actor voicing Wolverine in the games is the same as in the X-men Animated series from 1992. Cal Dodd. Though I doubt he worked on Dimahoo.

I wish there was a "SHUT THE *%$@! UP" option on Blazing Star, though. I can't stand that announcer.

Damn, I thought he was just a random gruffy voice actor. Couldn't even tell. Was everyone from the Marvel Capcom games the same VAs for the TV show? I'd feel really stupid if I didn't notice that at all...

That's your opinion. There are others here that agree that Compile games in general are great games. It's not like I said that everyone finds them fun.

I do agree that Batsugun and Donpachi are over the top, though Dodonpachi is more over the top. I do hope this topic won't be exclusive to recent manic shooters, though.

Jikkyo Obasari (sp?) Parodius has a very over the top voice. Too bad I have no idea what he says.

If you want other "cheesy game show host" announcers in fighting games you ought to try Capcom vs. SNK 2 and Tech Romancer...maybe even Guilty Gear XX to a lesser extent.

BioMetal. A little too much twitch for a twitch shooter, if you ask me.

"BONE US"!!

I actually consider the female announcer to be quite funny.

Although, the GigaWing yelling gets turned off by me. (at first it was cool, but now its annoying as all bloody hell)

If BioMetal actually played like a game, rather than a poorly emulated one on a shit computer, it wouldn't be half bad.
(more slowdown/flicker than Gradius III fer crying out loud!)
Its only hard because the framerate is awfull.

I love that SFA3 announcer. BEAT EM UP, GUY! GO FOR BROKE!

Another vote for DDP, Batsugun, and Giga Wing. You owe it to yourself to play GW through a good stereo system and crank it up. Not reccomended if you live in an apartment complex.

Definitely Batsugan. I remember playing it maybe a year ago and calling my brother into the room to tell him how insane the firepower was.
