Can you use the PS2 Street Fighter controller with KOF games

Post by dave4shmups »

Man, after this guy at Game Crazy let me use my PS2 Street Fighter controller to try out Alpha Anthology, I think I may actually be a Street Fighter fan! Seriously, it was THAT good with those games!

So, how well does it work-if at all-with the KOF series on the PS2?

You can use the street fighter controller with any PS2 game (that doesn't require analog sticks). It's just a PS2 controller.

Yes, welcome to the power of the dark side, dave. Did you try the stick out with any shooters?

It's not a stick, it's a pad.

There is, I think.

At any rate, I have tried it out with Silpheed 2, and it works OK, but it is thicker then the original Saturn controller (and, thus, I would assume, the PS2 Saturn controller) which makes it very uncomfortable for shmups.

And then you have this analog-nazi crap where, for example, in Megaman Anniversary Collection, you are told that you must have a controller that has analog-the game won't work without one.

Thank heavens for the Cube and the Game Boy Player controller; it's AWESOME for the 2 Sonic collections on the system, and it's also why I'll be picking up the Mega Man X Collection for the Cube, rather then the PS2.

At any rate, I may just start off with the Street Fighter Anniversary Collection, in terms of purchasing a game for this pad-maybe I can finally beat Street Fighter II, or at least have fun playing it.

Argh, I hate that. I think the Star Soldier remake on PS2 also has that.

However, I think one (or more) of the Hori arcade sticks has a configurable stick (i.e. you can map the joystick to the D-pad or either of the analogue sticks), so I presume it is analogue compatible.

Anyway, I hear Street Fighter Anniversary Collection is a very good compilation. Good choice.

It's OK. Do be aware that the PS2 version does not contain SF3:3S like the XBox version does.

Alpha Anthology is a ripper collection. One of Capcom's finest collections to date. Dave Sirlin was a part of the management team, and it shows. Finally they put together a compilation and listened to the fighting game community rather than shoving a half-arsed package down their throats. Hopefully it reaffirms to Capcom how popular the 2D fighing genre still is, and hopefully we'll see more quality repackages or even new games soon.

Jump on the Shoryuken forums. There's heaps of talk over there about all of these games.

Not sure what you mean here. The PS2 version doesn't have online play but it definitely has both games.

It's an excellent compilation IMO; too bad Hyper has lots of little mess-ups compared to the JP version.

Probably talking about the PAL version which didn't include Third Strike for some crazy reason. The PAL Xbox version does have it though.

OK, it looks like you NTSC folk once again get a better deal than we poor leftover PAL suckers.

The PAL PS2 release of Anniversary Edition did not contain Third Strike. In fact, there has never been a PS2 PAL release of Third Strike at all. I myself bought a Japanese copy from Play-Asia.

The XBox PAL version of AE did contain 3S however, and is a better deal if you live in a PAL territory and own both consoles. Plus as you mention, the online play is a winner too. That is, if you can find anyone in your country on low enouhg pings to play against (again, see the comments about we PAL losers getting shafted yet again).

I believe the NTSC-J regions also left out the 3rd Strike in their Hyper SFII release. Only the NTSC-U/C regions have both games on one disc.

Ahh, I see. My condolences then. I'm not sure why they'd even call it an Anniversary Collection though since Hyper is far from it... And yes, Japan didn't have a bundle because they got Hyper and 3S separately. But hey, they have the good version of Hyper without the messed up Claw Dive motion, Sagat's dummied down Tiger Shots, etc.

Yeah, Xbox Live play is pretty good over on this side of the pond. Lag is minimal in most cases, enough that many of the best US 3S players in real life still tend to be the best 3S players online (but of course, with altered strategy; they had to give up on hit confirming and all that).

Which explains why Third Strike is available as a separate purchase.

I'm not excited about Hyper. I have PCBs of most of the oldschool SF games anyway, and would much rather play them than the mishmash version. Bog standard SF2:HF is still my alltime favourite SF game.
