Vegas Shmuppin'.

Post by ArcticXC »

In a bit less than a week I'll be off to Vegas to do the things that are done in Vegas. Once I'm sick of losing my money I figure I might as well try out some of the arcades there so I'll at least enjoy losing it. ;)

So I was just curious as to where I should check out to find some shmups. I hear that the gameworks is pretty underwhelming and would probably be best to avoid.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

hey sup

If you're looking for a good arcade, Gameworks is the last place you wanna go. Unless you win a lot of money and you can buy a $35 One Day Pass, but even then it'll still feel like a ripoff. The only reasons to go there would probably be the US version Mr. Driller, Sonic The Fighters, and their old-school crap (Robotron 2084, a really fucked version of Ms. Pacman - where points are awarded 400, 400, 1600, 1600 for ghosts, and their recovery time is very fast - Missile Command with a rather large trackball, Centipede with a rather small trackball, Gorf, Space Invaders, monochrome Galaga, and a Xevious that eats your credits)....yeah. Raiden Fighters is 75 cents. xD

Anyways, here's sort of a rundown of where crap is at

-New York New York: Raiden Fighters, Mars Matrix (rather crappy sticks), Espgaluda
-The Orleans (off the strip, on Tropicana Ave.): Raiden Fighters Jet (set to like...5 lives per credit or something)...there's Tekken 5 there too and a whole bunch of fighters and Initial D/Wangan Midnight games...hey the arcade's owned by Namco whaddaya expect
-Tropicana: Strikers 1945 (was in absolute crap condition last I saw it...doubt it's been repaired)
-Circus Circus: Raiden Fighters 2, Raiden II (all the way in the BACK of the Miday arcade :/)..Defender, Metal Slug 3 and 5. At the Adventuredome you'll find no shmups at all under the Roller Coaster (you will find abother Metal Slug 5 though, in a Mortal Kombat cabinet), but you'll find quite a lot of Bemani music games on the 2nd level (by the Virtual Reality Zone), if you're into that sorta thing.
-Bally's: Raiden Fighters Jet 2000 (definitely a bootleg)

As far as the Strip's concerned, that's about it as far as shmups go or at least the places I've been to anyway. Havent checked out the Monte Carlo, Suncoast, Santa Fe Station, or some of the other farther away casinos in town.. On the old forums, someone mentioned seeing a 1944 cabinet somewhere, and a few others. Haven't been able to find it although I'd like to. Excalibur got rid of Gigawing (as well as 1/3rd of their total machines)...and most of the aforementioned places have Ultracade machines with their fair share of classic shmups on 'em...Luxor has an original Asteroids cocktail cabinet somewhere...Caesar's Palace closed their IMAX ride, and the arcade within as well.

If you're the type of person who'd actually drive 35-40 minutes to go to an arcade, take I-15 South to Primm...there you'll find

-Primm Valley: Strikers 1945 Plus...and ZOMG DEAD OR ALIVE 2
..think there was a Chase HQ there too
-Buffallo Bill's: Raiden II, Strikers 1945 II (by McDonalds), Twin Eagle, PLANET HARRIERS (!!!1one), and stuff like Irritating Maze, Battletoads, Polygonet Warriors, Ehrgeiz, Off The Wall, and the absolute CUTEST Mini-sized NeoGeo MVS with Samurai Showdown (again, by McDonalds)

..My crappy scores should still be on Strikers II and Plus :o

If anyone else has anything to add, go ahead...I'd reccomend NYNY for Galuda alone, although the only game there that saves high scores is Raiden Fighters....which has a 1st place score of over 74 million at the moment.

Mary K's Arcade and GameLand are both closed, I'd also like to know where their shmups (if any) were relocated to, if anyone has that info. GameLand's now obsolete (since the place closed) site listed Radiant Silvergun and R-Type as some of their games, I'd LOVE to find out where the fuck THEY are. There are also verious casinos and arcades in Henderson (south of Vegas), which might house some shmups as well...I'll try to research if possible o_o

Hope you have fun on yer vacation or whatever it is that you're doing :D

Man, I wish I had the money and time to go shmup traveling like you guys. Sounds like fun.

Wow, thanks for all the info! I doubt I'll be able to travel too far out of the way but at least Espgaluda is nearby. I've been kicking myself ever since passing it up while in Tokyo a few months back.

Thanks for the detailed rundown Skyline.
Looks like Gameworks hasn't changed a single game since I was last there 3 years ago! Just shows you that they don't give a Damn.

It also looks like Circus Circus hasn't changed their games either.

The first time I went to Vegas in '98, there was an arcade in Frontier I think? It had Viper Phase 1, but that arcade has been closed like the one in Caesar's.

Cheers,

That's a typical Gameworks with the slow as hell updating. It's quite frank that they care mainly about their vittles and booze and fuck all else. What is Tokyo Wars doing there still? Stuff like Sky Pirates can eat dust too. I've been to locations in Ohio, Kentucky, and Chicago- and it's the same sad story no matter where.

The Chi-town one has the 4P Warzaid for $1.75 a play. Ridiculous, especially when Wartran Troopers has been on the streets awhile. Metal Slug 5? Yup, it's there but you'll feed it $1.50 a play (really, this is sick for a Neo game). I think GW should switch to using quarters or tokens, since those debit card systems don't come cheap and chances are you're paying for them in increased game prices- usually 50-75 cents more than the average.

Namco Time-Out? There's one in my town but this location is rather small with maybe 50% outdated racing games. The only really new game there is Tekken 5. I'd go there probably for Point Blank 2, Tekken 5, and Time Crisis 2. The prices here are better than GW but still stiff in some cases- TC2 is 75 cents for example. Regrettably, tokens are always priced at cash value here- 2 Tokens means 50 cents always.
Kinect? KIN NOT.

Granted, there's not a whole lot of new releases to go around right now, but the Gameworks here in Seattle has been getting in some new stuff lately, including dual F-Zero AX machines.

Aside from the extra DDR machines and beatmaniaIIDX they got from GameLand, not much.

They do have a dual F-Zero AX in the Midway though, as well as stuff like SvC Chaos and Virtua Fighter 4 Evolution...but..yeah. Metal Slug5 /SvC Chaos/Cvs2 are fucking 75 cents a pop. That AUTOMATICALLY fails it. CvS1 is 50 cents, double wtf.

I also checked out the Monte Carlo yesterday just for the hell of it, absolute crap. Metal Slug 1 for 50 cents (...wtf?!) set to LEVEL-6, Pump It Up Exceed, and a bunch of Capcom fighters and Soul Edge (haha)

Going to check out Time-Out at Suncoast, and The Stratosphere sometime this week to see if they're absolute crap too.

Edit: Stratosphere's got a small place. Not a lot of machines, and precious real estate being taken up by an air hockey table and redemption machines. No shmups.

There is however Stunt Typhoon Plus from Taito, which is all kinds of fun if you don't mind the game's control...I guess this was a G.NET game?
