Does the SM have a "LANDING" section? Some late model Sonys do. If so, you can adjust corner purity issues with that. If not, and you dont want to go through the entire purity adjustment process of pulling back the yoke and adjusting the rings, then yes, some strategically placed (and properly oriented) magnets can often fix (or significantly improve) that.

Ive had good luck with 1cmx2mm round neodymium magnets.

You want to place your magnets depending on the issue-- for minor mislanding/discoloration issues near the top, bottom, or edge of the screen, start near the outer edge first. If you dont see an effect with 1 mag, stack 2 and try that. The side/polarity of the magnet touching the tube makes a difference. Also, you may find that standing the magnet(s) on its edge, perpendicular to the tube, and rotating it might give the desired effect. If this is the case, you can embed the magnet(s) in a lump of molding clay or playdough that can be taped / siliconed to the tube in the desired location and rotation orientation to achieve what you are looking for.

Thanks Josh. When I get closer to project time in the new year, I will consult with you on proper steps. Sounds like the magnet route is what would be in my comfort zone to start out with.

I am unsure if my service menu has the landing adjustments. Perhaps since it is one of the last 4:3 tubes, I might get lucky.

I’m just using it as 480p with current fw on the 5x pro. On the lookout for a replacement board…

Also, just wanted to add that I was able to remove all discoloration from my 40xbr800 with magnets as well. I also used neodymium magnets, moving around the tube with the back panel off and watching the screen until I found the sweet spot for it.
