Best monitor for retrotink 5x/Analogue consoles and Switch

Post by neorichieb1971 »

Hi,

I like the Samsung Oddyssey G3/G5 profiles, I believe both are VA monitors.

I really want to buy a monitor today. As usual I get into this equation of VA/IPS/TN and OLED. I think OLED is the best all round but the smallest monitor is a bit expensive.

Plus, I will man handle it because I will want to TATE the screen.

I can buy 2 monitors, but I want one to be 1440p and the other to be 1080p. I would prefer if they came from the same range with the same profile look.

This is the G3 - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Samsung-Odysse ... 1e9cd&th=1

Please let me know. :)

The G5 is curved so that certainly won't be what you want for Tate. And probably not what you want for Yoko.

The G3 maxes out at 1080p. If you're going for RetroTink 5x, it will let you go up to 1440p, but I cannot speak to if that particular monitor will be compatible with Switch/Analogue consoles going up to 1440p.

According to Amazon there is a G5 flat option as well. It is shown in tate mode.

My main concern is playing cave games and ghosting as the bench these are going on will house my joystick and tate setup.

Feel free to offer other solutions. My life in gaming went for a 32QN600 LG but it's a bit big. I can do it I will only have room for 1 screen. Not sure if being really close to that size is a good thing or not. And I don't have any idea how switch games look on 1440p.

My general recommendation is to have a monitor specific to every console era you want to access. Since you're talking exclusively about modern games that makes the recommendation criteria pretty short.
  • If you want to play Darius, get a curved ultrawide of some sort that's 5120x1440p capable. I've got a Samsung Odyssey and it works great.
  • If you want tate, you don't want an ultrawide, but you probably still want 1440p.
The reason I recommend 1440p is that a lot of previous era games actually topped out at 720p and 1440p should integer scale that just fine. Anything 1080p native you can probably get integer scaled on that 1440p monitor with the right settings and black bars around the image. As a slight bonus, 1440p will also let you scale 256*240 images both at an integer scale and stretched to 4:3 scale.
Why is it called the Vic Viper/Warp Rattler? Because the Options trail behind it in a serpent-like fashion, and the iconic front fins are designed to invoke the image of a snake's fangs.
