Need some help w/ OEV203 (Sony PVM-20M2) Vertical Collapse after recap.

Post by kaizo4life »

Hello everyone! I have an Olympus OEV203 (re-badged Sony PVM-20M2) and it had the horizontal RGB lines that indicate a few caps on the deflection circuit needed replacement before a more serious fault occurred. I have done a few recaps / transistor replacements on vintage audio stuff, but outside of being able to solder fairly well I have very limited troubleshooting skills.

I was wondering if anyone here could point me in the right direction on what to check. When I fired up the monitor nothing went up in smoke, and when I bring up the OSD menu, it appears everything else is working fine besides the screen being collapsed to a line.

I have 12v at r592. Removing the board again to inspect revealed all my soldering looks good. Caps are in the correct orientation and correct values. Nothing looks off top / or bottom on the A board. I am not awesome with schematics, but some basic continuity checks seem good. I am at a loss for where to start.

I was looking at another thread here viewtopic.php?hilit=sony%20vertical%20c ... 214671fd1b

Someone suggested checking the voltage at two diodes d528 and d530 and to look for 24 and 50v respectively. I did measure those and got 30v on both. I am not sure if that will help.

I am really hoping to learn more about basic troubleshooting, it's kind of daunting without someone to show you the ropes.

Thanks in advance everyone! I hope I can revive this beautiful PVM.

Just a cursory ask, you did double check the vertical deflection coil connections? I once blew a horizontal output transistor on a monitor after pulling the yoke and working on it. When I *carefully* reassembled the monitor and powered it on, it had a bright vertical line in the center of the screen. I powered it off, but not quickly enough, I suppose. Found I had forgotten to reconnect horizontal deflection coil connector to the main board. When I connected it and tried again, it was too late.

Or maybe Im misunderstanding-- your menu looks fine, just inputs are not?

It all squished but its a fat enough line where I can see the menu working.

I did find something interesting, When I have my meter in continuity mode and black probe on a ground. None of the pins of q515 will beep, but the other adjacent IC's at least of of the pins has continuity relative to ground. Also, if I put my meter on each raised lead of r1528 in beep mode there is no beep. I want to say r1528 read about 400ish ohms in circuit. Same with r538 which is close by no beep with meter on each of the legs and I want to say r538 read a little over 1k ohms in circuit. Not sure if I am on to some, but perhaps q515 (v.out 2 ic I believe could be fried)

That is the best I have so far

I'm going to go back through each cap that was replaced pull it and check the pads, any other ideas would be appreciated. Feeling discouraged.

Hey Kaizo, did you ever fix this problem? As my PVM has the same issue and very similar voltage readings at those two diodes. Not sure where to look next!
