If Vasara was the series that got you going on shmups, you need to start looking at Psikyo's catalogue as you'll find very similar, but more evolved and refined systems in series like Gunbird, Strikers and Dragon Blaze. You can find many of these available on Switch, though the port quality varies quite a bit and you might do better on other platforms.

Tengai has a very similar vibe to Vasara, with its flying samurai theme. No melee attacks though.
