a TGS 2023 thread

Post by minion »

This isn't particularly organized, it's kind of a dump of pictures and thoughts I had as I wandered the show floor, looking for shmup-related stuff. I posted most of it in real-time in shmup junkie's discord general channel, so if you're on there this is probably all stuff you've seen before.

This year everyone got funnelled into the same entranceway in hall 1. I was pretty surprised to see that Tatsujin had bought a pretty large booth. Very little decoration (just black walls). Tatsujin Extreme was playable, as was the smartphone toaplan collection. They had stations with the latter hooked up to both Mayfair arcade sticks and regular console controllers (I saw a PS5 controller I think). They had a really nice Tatsujin Extreme promotional manga they were giving away, and had a stage area where they were running a talk track, interviewing members of development staff. Really unusual to see such a niche developer buying a full-sized booth in the main halls, usually shmups are tucked away at publisher booths or around the edges for the really small indie publishers like BEEP! and Success. Someone in the schmup discord had me ask a developer if they were releasing physical media for TE. He said they hadn't made any announcement yet so he could not confirm or deny. M2 had 'reference exhibits' of Tatsujin Ou and Outzone running.

City Connection section had a nice classic Exerion exhibit to promote the release of Final Exerion on 9/21. I really liked the look of FE. Trailer is at https://youtu.be/0NE4G6FIjzE
Image
Image
CC also had Assault Suit Leynos 2 Saturn Tribute showing, as always on these I'm worried about latency but glad to see this game rereleased
Image
SUCCESS booth was giving away Cotton keychains and had a Cotton Rock n Roll 2 trailer playing https://youtu.be/SXGnZDXscn8
Image
Formation Z remake was not my bag, never been into this style of shooters. Cool key art looking like an actual toy, though.
Image
Tozaisection of the Taito booth was showing Irem collection vol 1, had Irem collection vol 2 flyers too. First one is confirmed on the flyer as having a physical release, that made me happy.
Image

Image
Egret 2 Mini second SD card expansion was being promoted over in this section too. Some fun shooters on this, and some of them are hard to get otherwise. KK Tiger 2 and Night Striker are both pretty fun.
Image
Konami booth had Cygni all guns blazing, which looked VERY nice. Great production values, high hopes for this one.
Image
Macross Shooting Insight was a fun time, especially if you're a fan of the various anime series, it has characters from all of them and the game reminded me of the PSX version a bit, which I liked a lot.
Image
Black Finger Jet had a trailer playing, and you could meet and chat with the team members. Really neat. Looked super fun, really looking forward to this.

In the indie section the developer for Burst Fighter had it set up to play. This has been out for a while and I'd never played it, gave it a shot and had a good time. Stuck it on my Steam wishlist and will grab it next time I'm looking for something new.

Thanks for the flurry of images, mate - these are great. Really enjoyed your writeup.

Q: Did you catch any info about the Toaplan 'reference exhibits'? Was there any mention of an upcoming Toaplan Garage release, or was it just a very tantalizing teaser?

Not really, no. They just had them on one wall near a bunch of the merch displays (which included various M2 releases of Toaplan games) with the signs in front of them that say 開発中のまだ製品化が決定していないタイトルです。(machine translation: "This title is still under development and has not yet been announced as a product.") I think there is some more discussion about it in the M2 Toaplan Collection thread tho

Oh, one other thing. Another discord member asked if I could go find Koshiro's new game Earthion but it wasn't on the floor, only a presentation on the first public day (the 23rd), which I wasn't a day I was at the show. The presentation is at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nXD8T990g18&t=12198s (skip to https://youtu.be/nXD8T990g18?t=12659 for direct-feed game footage) if you're interested.

Whoa it's beautiful! :o Image

Muh feels @ Leynos 2 re-release. Same same same. 3; Game's dear to my heart, but I can't quite get behind these. I hear EAR turned out ok, and I know from experience with natively-laggy boards (lots of Namco stuff), ~5f is more than low enough to adjust to. Get a feeling so complicated.

On the mecha sidescroller tip, Formation Z is a longtime want of mine for remake. The concept is great, a sort of ground-based Hyper Duel with Masaya's sim-lite elements (can't waste fuel)... but the combination of 1HKOs and floaty controls keeps it out of Leynos/Valken/Ranza's ballpark. Of course those are all console titles, but I think Wolf Fang showed mecha heft was possible in deadly coin-op context (and Leynos is balls-harder than some AC titles, besides). Not coincidentally hyped for next week's ACA Finest Hour.

Glad to see proof of life for TAGv4 / onward. Will be hovering over em like Vito and poor Fredo in Godfather Part II regardless ofc :3

Just got back myself. I played Tatsjin Extreme and the new Snow Bros (both are A LOT better than they look in the trailers!) had nice long talks with Yuge-san and Hayashi-san about Tatsujin, Tatsujin Extreme, and CATS (I know why his hair stands up straight like that now~), and I also talked to Joker Jun about Btooom! a little bit.

I also talked to the M2 ShotTriggers dude about their upcoming stuff, the Tatsujin Ou and Out Zone they had on display, gave the dude a bug report about the missing PCB autofire on PS4 Horror Story, and then somehow ended up helping Joe do some stuff for the documentary, so I ended up spending the entire day at Tatsujin's place. I am tired as hell and need to go take a shower, but I'll post some pictures and stuff when I can.

I have a higher-rez photo of the flyer (click through for full rez), although I'm sure you can find this elsewhere on the internet too. I was pleased but not surprised that it's got a nice first-print run physical copy with extras. Might have to pick it up.
