Sony PVM 20L4 jitter

Post by Initial-d »

Hi, I’ve had this PVM awhile and it’s been solid , but recently I notice the image moves/jitters slightly when you look really close at a test grid.

I’ve read this is normally a cap problem in the deflection area and that it was two particular caps (C592 and C572 on a Pvm 1354Q). I didn’t know if anyone knew the equivalent in the 20L4 as it’s a different beast looking over the service manual. Boards D and D1 are the deflection area, but other than trying to swap out caps randomly I don’t know what ones I’m actually after.

Get an ESR meter and test each capacitor, replace the ones out of spec. There's no recipe when it comes to electronics, your case may be unique.

Had a look at some of the caps and most look to be about 10% out of spec, so I ordered a cap kit which should hopefully fix the issue.

Its a 2002 model so I thought it may not suffer from issues so soon, but its still like 20 years old and although externally it looks good... I have no idea about hours since its a PVM.

It still works but best to address things now. :D

Apparently a lot of the caps in the deflection area get too hot from being too close to heatsinks, so they fail a lot sooner.

I replaced a handful in a 1353md and it looks good as new. I also found that the motherboards, and thus the caps that need replacing, didn't change a lot between PVM generations. So if you find a list of deflection caps to replace for one PVM, it'll largely be the same for another.
